It's incredible how much work and talent happens behind the scenes, the unsung heroes who people barely know about. They piano riff is also neat to play once you know the correct notes.

I have the multitracks of the original raw tracks of Vogue, it’s interesting to listen to the 909 parts.. the whole track sounds so plain unmixed and unedited! Except the vocals which seem pretty perfect

This drum beat is the best sounding ever, and I have been wondering for a long time what drum machine she used. It's the TR-909. I like the sound of the TR-808 and now the 909 also. Cool!

Madonna also sampled Public Enemy’s “Security of the First World” beat on her “Justify My Love”. The “Security of the First World” beat was a sampler (?) recreation of the James Brown “Funky Drummer” breakbeat. Very meta!

Grande Paolo!! Grazie in anticipo e Buon Anno.

Nice tutorial Paolo. Is some of the percussion in swing time vs. perfectly straight timing? I know you mentioned in a recent video that some swing was typical of the era say for hi hats and the snare ghost notes. Since I can't perfectly follow the original track so easily, I just assumed there was some swing. Or my timing is terrible. . . Thanks!
@SynthManiaDotCom6 жыл бұрын
Dos gos, the 909 one seems straight in the video, but perhaps some of the other components are "looser" - Vogue definitely has a thick arrangement full of synths / samples / percussion on top of the 909 style beat
@dosgos6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paolo. I think your 909 demo sounds just right so wanted to see if you had incorporated some swing. There is a lot going on in that song as you note. I think the 909 is playing way in front of the beat to give the song energy; that might have been easy with a live drummer but I think the production team worked a lot to get it to "groove" with early 90s tech. The Ital-piano definitely has some effects & syncopation that impact the timing/feel (and maybe some swing); I suppose that might have been the offender. Those early 90s house pianos were very low quality samples due to technology costs but somehow producers got inspiring sounds; I wonder what the trick was. If you need a video idea, you might take a modern piano sample and show us how to get that house piano sound with minimal effects just to see what is behind the curtain (there are a zillion house songs to pick although Vogue would be fine too).

Thanks Mad4400. Video is called "Roland TR-909 Famous Patterns" and his Vogue explanation is at 3:42. Dr Mix confirms straight time & says the vocals are driving the swing feel. I suspect other instruments are helping swing things. . .

Synthmania, anyway you are familiar with the drum programming going on in 1979 by smashing pumpkins? I think it was done by Flood on an alesis sr16. I have an sr18 and have been trying to make it to use with my cover band to add a little extra. I've looked around the internet for a breakdown of the beat but have found little to nothing.
@SynthManiaDotCom6 жыл бұрын
Peter, yes, I am familiar with the Smashing Pumpkins as my sister had their CDs and also with the SR-16 drum machine as I bought an SR-16 new when they came out in 1990. The pattern in 1979 is a simple 8-beat.. do you have problems recreating it on the SR-18?
@peterhahn826 жыл бұрын
SynthMania i was more referring to the intro and the patch/drum kit used at the very first couple of seconds of the song. It sounds maybe layered and i kind of got lost on it. Im new to drum programming as my background is guitar
