Appears that different Baofeng branded cables have different chips. I have one cable with the Prolific chip and another with a CH360 chip. Incidentally you don’t need the radio connected to determine the com port , just plug in the USB end into the PC and device manager will recognize it. These cables tend to be finicky and work with some HT’s and not others. Just wanted to share this post, great video as always. 73.

You're correct on both points. Some models' cases make it hard to get a good connection on the K1 connector. Thanks for commenting.

Was hoping to get some insight on the other Fields listed on the CPS, such as VFO A and VFO B. Informative but very basic info.

My issue is my computers are both Macs. Most manufacturer CPS are set up for Windows computers, although Chirp is not. Chirp will let me change and save data on my UV-5R but doesn't have access to my new UV-5G Plus radios. I'm new at GMRS and hit this snag.

I highly recomend your Book “The New Operator’s Guide to GMRS”. As a new-be to the GMRS world, I found “The New Operator’s Guide to GMRS” to be very helpful in explaining the gobbly-gook buzz phrases to the average user. The book has even helped the dull-witted such as myself to understand the guru language for programming my radios.

This was excellent, thanks! You didn't mention FTDI drivers, I wonder if they are needed for the "cheap" GMRS programming cables.
@GadgetTalk4U2 ай бұрын
The cheap cables are often not FTDI cables. they may need their own drivers. Most of the time nowadays, Windows will recognize and download drivers, but not always. I like the FTDI cables as they work with nearly all the radios. Programming cables that come with the HTs ususally work, too. Third party cables have, in the past, been problematic.
@WilliamParmley2 ай бұрын
@@GadgetTalk4U Thanks for the reply! I have several cables that use the FTDI driver (a couple of RT Systems cables and a couple of USB to serial adapters) and they work great. Just applied for a GMRS license and ordered a pair of UV-5G Plus HTs and am getting up to speed on everything while waiting for the US Mail today. (Your channel has been a great help. 😀) Looking forward to trying out the programming cable and software for the new radios. My IC-R6 made me a believer in programming software. Not easy to program a radio that only has four buttons plus a Function key!

Hello and good morning. I have an assistance question: if I may ask on my GM-30 using the CPS how do I go about entering the following repeater settings. software wont allow me. Ranchino repeater; RX: 462.600 DPL/DCS 23, TX: 467.600 DPL/DCS 23. the CPS wont allow me. Cant seem to figure what I'm doing wrong. TYI 73!
@GadgetTalk4U Жыл бұрын
I'm using version 2.06 of the CPS. Go to one of the DIY channels from channels 31 to 54. Select the receive frequency of 462.600 in the drop down box. The transmit frequency should show 467.600 automatically. Set D023 from both of the QT/DQT columns. Add a name if you like in the name column. Save the changes to your computer and write them back to the radio. You must use a channel in the 31 to 54 range or just add the tones to Channel 25. Good luck.

Q: @gadgettalk when using the privacy codes, will you walk on others using the channel even if you cannot hear them? and will your TX get walked on?

Yes, if you don't notice your receive led lit. Others without codes will hear you, so hopefully won't double you.

@kevinscully66472 жыл бұрын
A very useful video for those just getting into GMRS, thanks. Your link to all the channels that can be included for scanning can really help one unlock the potential of the radio to let you tap into the information flow going on in world around you. Have you found a way to import the programmed channels from one radio into another radio made by a different manufacturer? It would be great if one could transfer these channels to save duplication of effort.
@GadgetTalk4U2 жыл бұрын
I haven't found an easy way. For radios with an import function in the CPS you can import the channels but you'd likely have to first change the order of the variables in the CSV files to match what the radio expects if using a different model or brand. It's never easy. Cheers.

@@GadgetTalk4U Thanks for taking the time to respond. I hope you are having fun doing these reviews, I certainly enjoy them. BTW, I'd love to hear your take on the Motorola T800 (I own the T801). It is an FRS radio with surprisingly good range, and the ability to send texts directly to other linked phones via the T800 radio while off grid and the ability to display your location to other in-range T800-linked phones is very cool tech (includes an SOS function). This would be a good next-step for GMRS radios.

Are you aware if I can program a diy channel that is a gmrs channel with privacy tones? I'd like to have channel 1 with no tones and then a separate 462.56250 channel with a privacy tone to match my Midland radios. Can't seem to set up. DIY channel that will transmit on a GMRS frequency.
@GadgetTalk4U10 ай бұрын
It depends on a couple of things. First, the radio itself must allow DIY channels. Most newer ones do, but not all. Next, the DIY channels must allow all the GMRS channels, not just the repeater channels. Last, check to see if your radio limits what channels can accept DIY transmit channels. Some allow all channels above 30 to accept them, others only 31 to 54. Good luck.
