Christine, I'd like to ask you if you've noticed that when most Americans pronounce "I've" the v part sounds like a "weak f". Maybe you haven't thought of it, I hope you have but it's easy to identify this for a non-native speaker. Also, something I really loved about this video is that you addressed the pattern that some Americans use which is just saying "av" and I just listened to a song which the singer of it says "I've been to the bottom..." as "av...", though you addressed it as wrong they still use it and it's good for us to know what's actually happening. Thank you very much for this approach.

Hi, yes, voiced sounds like z, v, and d sometimes sound like a weak version of their voiceless cognates s, f and t. It depends on what follows - if I were to say a phrase like "I've eaten" where the next word starts with a vowel sound, we'll use a stronger voiced /v/ to link to the next word. If the next word starts with a consonant sound, we get the phenomenon you mentioned.

Please make a video for pronunciation of word what'd be and what'd ( I'm little confuse to understand is it would or did). Please help me.
@SpeechModification2 жыл бұрын
Hi, "what'd be" is "what would be," for example, "What would be good" gets contracted to "what'd be good." "What'd" is "what did," as in "what'd he do?" Here's a video to help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpmoloR7bdhqmbs

I have an issue with the listening, I can't tell when someone is saying I or I've, that 'V' sound is sooo low or pretty subtle
@SpeechModification4 ай бұрын
Yes, it's often very subtle, but the grammar of the sentence will usually tell you whether I or I've was used.

It's so hard for me to hear the final V sound it sounds like an f and in fast conversations I can't hear it whatsoever for example, " I've been" to me sounds like as if you guys were just dropping the V sound and stressing the word BEEN so it sounds like I been instead of I've been
@cristhianyadhir58882 жыл бұрын
Same thing happens with the contraction of "would" like I can't hear the final d sound so I normally just drop it when I'm talking
@SpeechModification2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it can be hard to hear both the /v/ and the /d/ in "I've" and "I'd." For "I'd," we often used and unreleased /d/. You can learn more about pronouncing that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/apuVqHSwj6l3gMU and here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/apuVqHSwj6l3gMU Just leaving the v or d off is okay, as long as you don't hold the vowel a long time. If I go right from "I" to the next word without making the mouth shape for the v or d, it will sound different. So even though you don't hear a clear /v/ or /d/, you'd be able to hear a difference when a native speaker just says "I." It's challenging, for sure, but might be worth trying to get it correct so it won't sound like a grammar error when you're speaking.
