I am a native Korean speaker and someone asked me how to pronounce "ㄹ" correctly and I had no idea how to answer that question. thank you for your video. But, I am a bit confused by the pronunciation of the consonant in these words, "나라" and "라디오." I said them out loud so many times and I pronounce both "라" in those two words as "la" and they sound exactly the same to me. Do English speakers hear that "R" in "나라" and "L" in "라디오"????

I think that even tho the placement of the tongue is the same, when pronouncing 나라 for example, the tongue does the movement faster, if that makes sense? Like while in 놀라다 the tongue stays in that position a little bit longer, in 나라 is like a flicker of the tongue, that's why we foreigners hear it as two separate sounds. Idk im just saying what ive been observing ahaha

So, when you say 나라 it sounds the same as 날라? At Google Translator it doesn't, instead it's 나라 = nara and 날라 = nalla.

I think you shouldn't have compared it to any english letter, even if its more like an "english l" or an "english r" you won't get the same sound as ㄹ is pronounced. To pronounce ㄹ put your tongue to the roof your mouth! Sorry for being so picky I just think the outcome would be better this way! 💕

I know the sound of the letters about shape of your mounth and where you putting your tounge and your comment is really helpfull for ㄹ. Do you know what to do for ㄱ,ㄷ and ㅂ too?

I'm a huge fan of your channel but I think it was a bad idea to compare ㄹ to an English l or r as technically it is neither. The ㄹ sound is achieved by placing your tongue further back (almost where we make the English D sound). It's a stand alone sound so perhaps Korean learners should view it as that and avoid thinking of it in English terms.

Thanks for this! I struggle with this a little in Korean. I’m a beginner. However, I’ve studied Japanese for several years, and their r/l sound is slightly rolled, so you essentially just flick your tongue on the top of your mouth when you use it. Korean seems sort of similar, but I’m struggling with it when it’s by itself. Like in 한글. In Japanese, it always has to be with something else, like “Ra, ri, ru, re, ro.” So, I’m struggling a bit with words ending in it. But thanks for this explanation ^_^ I do think it’s best not to compare with English anything though. At least in my experience learning foreign languages, it’s best not to compare them, and take each one as it is on its own.

How do you pronounce 를
@valeriag28426 жыл бұрын
If you read it without attaching it to a word both ㄹ are an "l", but because it is used after a word that ends with a vowel, you pronunce the first ㄹ as an "r" and the second an "l". For example 사과를 is pronounced as sa-gwa-reul
