Thank you for the great instruction! I'm a bit curious about the combination of "/ɔr/ + /ə/" and "/ɔr/ + /ər/". Since the /r/ in /ɔr/ produces /ə/ quality, when /ə/ comes after it, there should be two /ə/ quality sounds coming together. However, in words such as territory /ˈter·əˌtɔr·i/, explorer /ɪkˈsplɔr·ər/, I only hear the /ə/ sound. Is it because of the fast linking so we don't hear the /ə/ quality in R? Or does the /ə/ quality sound in R get cancelled out when linking? I know it's subtle but it bothers me. Thanks!

Hi teacher, I have a question. How can I pronounce the schwa sound in the third syllable in the word "perforMANCE" like (perforMANCE or perforMENCE)? I am so sorry if it is a stupid question. But I can't distinguish the schwa sound.

Hi, I think I can explain my previous question better in this way. For syllabic consonant /ər/, /ə/ is usually reduced because they share the same /ə/ quality. So what if when /ə/ comes after /r/? There're still two /ə/ quality sounds together, so can /ə/ be reduced? Example word: authority /əˈθɔr.ə.t̬i/ sounds the same as /əˈθɔr.t̬i/. Do you agree? Thanks!
@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole

Wow, that's very detailed. Thank you for your examples. The schwa is a very reduced sound already, so much so that many non-natives do not detect it. And you may be correct, that some native speakers too may actually leave it out in some words. I'm specifically thinking of words with dropped syllables, like family, business, chocolate, etc., where the weak syllable over time has been completely dropped in most natural speech. I have never heard the specific theory you're proposing about schwa following ER or R, but it may very well be the case, or at least in very relaxed speech. You'll hear a lot of variation among native speakers based on region, age, education, socioeconomic status, etc.

@@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole Thank you so much for the explanation! Just for clarification, for words such as authority /əˈθɔr.ə.t̬i/, territory /ˈter·əˌtɔr·i/, do native speakers still pronounce full vocalic R and the schwa following R? So we'll hear two /ə/ quality sounds together if in slow motion? Thanks!

1. In "The won the award for best short story", I hear the way you pronounce "won the" is that you drop the th in "the" and "won the" sounds "woni", is my hearing right? 2. In this connection some teacher talks about a rule that " After n,s, and z , th sound is dropped", so I was trying to use this rule to pronounce something like ""The won the reward for best short story" and "won the" will sound like "wonə", some american discourages me from doing that as this pronunciation may suggest "won a" instead of the intended "won the". However, in your example of "The won the award for best short story", there's no need to worry about any misunderstanding that's why you say "won the" as "woni", is my understanding correct?
