The dark 'L' is an interesting sound to explain to my Korean students. Korean, like French, doesn't have the dark 'L'. The 'l' in Korean (as well as French) has the tongue tip touching the roof of the mouth in a more flat position. I have noticed many Englisih speakers speaking French but using a dark 'L' and that is a give away that they are not native French speakers.

Hello Rachel ,I'm so happy to discover your channel, I'm a woman from Algerian, I'm an Arabic native speaker and here in our schools we learn French first than we learn English but as you know the Arabic language has the letters that doesn't exist in other languages so I really don't find it difficult to speak as a native speaker I just need practicing. my question here is : can you make a video for us showing the most common words that contain silent letters : like muscles >> the L is silent and so on ... . thank you so much Rachel and Salam from me :) .

Hi,Rachel. Can you make a video about "This" vs "These"? Thank you.
@demeko96
@demeko96 8 жыл бұрын
Hi ! I know you're asking Rachel but just in case she doesn't see your comment... In "this", the "i" is the same "i" that you have in "to sit", "to fit", "hit", or "english". it's a mid-centralized close front (and unrrounded) vowel, noted [ɪ] in the IPA. I don't know if that helps, but try to listen (you got the sound again in "listen") to the pronunciation of such words on linguee.com for example. As regards "these", the vowel is way longer than "this" and more closed too. You have to strech your lips so you can get a real "i" like in the end of "totallY", or "belIEve", or "defEAt". I don't know if that's really clear, I tried my best x)

Hi rachel..could you please explain the difference between " complain vs complaint " please..thank you rachel..
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 6 жыл бұрын
Hello! Sure! 'Complain' is a verb, and "complaint" is a noun. As for how they sound, if you are using a Stop T at the end of "complaint", they will sound very similar. But you should still be able to tell the difference because "complaint" will end with an abrupt stop of air flow after the N sound, while "complain" will not have that abrupt stop. Because of this, the second syllable of "complain" will sound a little longer than in "complaint".

This is good information, but as a native English speaker, I just wanted to offer some encouragement to anyone learning English. I am from the Southern United States and when I say "pool" and "pull" it sounds exactly the same. By all means, if you are interested in learning to say things perfectly, please do so. But, if you are new to learning English, please don't feel like you have to get this perfect for an English speaker to understand you. If your "pull" and "pool" sound the same, 99%+ of English speakers are not even going to notice.
