How about /iə/ as in the word 'really' /ˈriəli/ or in the word 'theater', is it a diphthong in American English?
@englishvibes9961 Жыл бұрын
I was wondering that too
@englishvibes9961 Жыл бұрын
I think it's a dipthong in British only
@TaiLe-dr5ve Жыл бұрын
@@englishvibes9961 yes, in British it is diphthong. In American English, it is 2 syllables. But sometimes, American native speaker speaks it as a diphthong similar British, for ex: 'theater'. Sometimes they speak as 2 syllables, as in word 'media'.

Hello Hadar! Isn't the first sound the same in the diphthongs of words like "now" and "my"? Because most American English dictionaries have "now" and "my" with /a/ as the first sound in their diphthongs: "Now" /naʊ/ and "my" /maɪ/. Other dictionaries have the sound /ɑ/ as the first sound in their diphthongs: "Now" /nɑʊ/ and "my" /mɑɪ/. And other dictionaries have the sound /æ/ as the first sound in their diphthongs: "Now" /næʊ/ and "my" /mæɪ/. But none of the dictionaries has two different sounds for the first sound of both diphthongs. However, you differentiate both first sounds in the diphthongs: /æ/ in "now" as /næʊ/ and /a/ in "my" as /maɪ/. Thank you very much for your response in advance!

Think you made a mistake! The /o/ in the /oʊ/ dipthong is a monothong /o/, not the o vowel found in NOT ("/nɑt/ ). This monothong /o/ can be found in spanish word such as peso
