skinny shishtar The Cajuns don’t have that problem either, nor did any of the French speaking Djiboutians that I’ve met. It’s amazing how many dialects there are for one language. Pronounciation aside, I find this video absolutely fantastic. Marvelous use of visuals, music and minimalistic, but very efficient special effects based on creative use of typefaces and transitions. Excellent make-up and stylization. Whole production looks simple but there's a lot of hard work behind it.

moss-key-no In Italian, the C is always 'hard' like the English K unless followed by an i or an e, in which case it is pronounced 'soft', like the English Ch. So, the word Cupola is pronounced koo-powl-ah, and the word Chiaro is pronounced kee-aow-roh, but the word Ciao is pronounced ch-ow, and the word Città is pronounced cheat-ahh. :)

Only in the Canary Islands and in some parts of Andalucia the Z is pronounced as an S, like in most countries in South America. Zara is from Galicia, in the north of Spain, so there is no doubt about the pronunciation: the sound TH- in english must be used.

+Jessica Sebastião understandable, but I think it's just confusing because the whole purpose of the video is to give definitive pronunciations on hard-to-pronounce names. But how are we to know which way to say them if we're given conflicting pronunciations? I just think it was lazy on the part of the creators. They should have made sure the models' pronuncations were uniform and accurate.

The previous creative director Hedi Slimane dropped the Yves and rebranded the label as its current name Saint Laurent or Saint Laurent Paris, the YSL name and logo is only used for cosmetics and handbags/shoes. Looks like the new creative director Anthony Vaccarello has paid homage to the YSL logo on runway once again, but I don't know if Vaccarello will actually rename the brand back to Yves Saint Laurent.

+Jessica G. Exactly. Well almost. I would make 1 change tho: Since in Italian the "e" is always pronounced as "ay", I would say it's more like broo-skayt-tah. (And Italians ALWAYS pronounce both of the letters in a double consonant pairing like "tt". So that rhythmic lilt you hear is them pausing after the first t to differentiate it from the sound of the next t ;-)
@ellameenson
@ellameenson 7 жыл бұрын

For everyone: Nike is always pronounced "nikey" or "nike"(like mike) . After some researches i find out that both "nikey" and "nike" pronunciations are wrong. The correct pronunciation should be "nee-keh", but the founder of the brand changed it into "nikey". So since the owner of the brand decided so that is how people should call it (eventho its wrong)
@bannyreynolds9547
@bannyreynolds9547 5 жыл бұрын
Yass, the original word 'nike' (nee-keh) comes from the ancient greek nike=goddess of victory or more easily the noun 'victory'. Maybe you already know, but in the greek mythology there's a tale about a soldier who runs for days from the place where the last battle against the persians has been to his city, in order to announce that the greek poleis have won the war. He runs, he never stops and when he finally arrives, he can just scream three times 'nike, nike, nike', 'victory, victory, victory' before dying. Ancient greeks are such drama queens🙄😂

iyawakarehen I can't understand that! It seems like it goes against the laws of French! Have you ever heard anyone say "Brugez, Belgium"? Or "vacancez"? "Françaisez"?! No, it's "Brooj", "vay-cahnss", and "Fran-sez." Am I right?
@iyawakarehen
@iyawakarehen 10 жыл бұрын
doodl3bugg13 Well, yes, I have heard uneducated French speakers say Bruges and pronounce its s but no one would ever say these as z's like your English speaker brain seems to believe, a s is a s not a z. Also it's /brüj/ and /vah-cans/ and these final s are silent because they're plural marks. You don't say un hermè, des hermès, it's Hermès as in a proper noun that you pronounce all the letters of like you will have to pronounce all the letters of the names Inès or Tobias including the s.
@katianovakk
@katianovakk 10 жыл бұрын
iyawakarehen Ok, no need to be a know-it-all ass. I used "z"s because I was trying to emphasize the use of the "s" sound. Also I just said that you DON'T pronounce all those "s"s and you corrected me as though I had said the opposite....Also, if we really wanna bitch each other out, I can tell you that it's not "...a s is a s not a z...," it's, "...AN s is AN s is a z..." We use the word "an" before vowel sounds in English--- but your "French speaker brain" probably can't comprehend that. Thank you for answering my question, albeit with a fucking attitude. (PS: I know I also have an attitude, but you started it.)

I feel like people need to understand that just because a name is native to our english language doesn't mean it is universally known as that pronunciation. To think that just because the name 'Alexander McQueen' is easy because we know how to pronounce it and no one else should have a problem with it is very westernized outlook on the world. There was no uproar when they pronounced japanese, italian, or fench brand names because that is not our native language, and we see that as a reason to be pronounced. There are going to be people who don't speak english fluently and see this video to understand how to pronounce Alexander McQueen because to them it is a hard name to pronounce, much like us for a japanese brand.
