The bag thing. I use a big zip lock bag and put a couple of cutting pots in the bag then water them, then close the bag up. BUT when there is just a little of the bag open I blow up the bag so it will sit up straight then zip the last bit closed. Now any water that evaporates will condense on the bag and run down the sides and be soaked up by the bottom of the pot. Obviously the zip lock seal is at the top for this method. Bag coverings in general really help cuttings or just make it easier for us I suppose.

Do you need to let the plastic bag vent so you do not get mold? I use the top of 2 Liter bottles for my rose cuttings so it retains humidity but fresh air can still enter. Curious if this would work as well for bay. Any thoughts appreciated. Thank you for sharing your video.

Thank you! I have tried to grow some suckers from a friends plants and the leaves dry out and they are gone so quickly. We grab them already with a little but of root and I dipped on root hormone powder, added phosphorous (i believe) in the potting soil and they died. Do you think that if I just eliminate the leaves, use the bag, my suckers will grow roots? Or should I cut the broken roots off (they break as we pull from the ground)

@LearnToGrow1

Hi Anna, it’s usually best to take cuttings in the middle of summer when the new stems are firm, but pliable. You can still try and take some cuttings with you…may try the older stems, but they may be not root. It can take up to 4-5 months to root from experience.

@Lora The bay tree's shoot tip develops a stack of reddish-brown buds with bud-scales (which at a glance could easily be misinterpreted as a flower structure) just prior to a burst of rapid *vegetative* growth, i.e. stem elongation, of that tip. Not a big deal that you pruned it off and thwarted the tree's plans to grow more, but don't do it again. :) I haven't had my indoor bay trees flower before, but a Google image search suggests that the bay's flowers start as little balls at the base of leaves near the ends of branches.

So, in Vancouver BC, taking clippings in May/June, bagged, rooted by Aug/Sept and transplant to individual 4" pots un-bagged. I'm guessing they can't be hardened off and transplanted outside in the ground until the following spring or what would be recommended? Many thanks!
@LearnToGrow1
@LearnToGrow1 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, If you live in a cold climate where winter temperature is below 0 degrees F , then wait to transplant outside in spring. Bay Laurel is supposed to be hardy to 0 degrees F. If you decide to plant it out, do it 6 to 8 weeks before your first frost date. Otherwise wait and overwinter it till next spring. If your climate gets colder than 0 F, you need to bring it indoors every fall. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching! Misilla

@@LearnToGrow1 Thanks! Very Helpful! As we rarely go below 32F here in Vancouver, Transplanted outside in Aug/Sep with mulch may be an option, but I will play it safe and wait for the last frosts to be over first. Thanks Again!

Hi, from Germany. Thank you for your instruction. May I ask a questions? Why recommend the bottom slank cut? This advice exist in Germany for Roses in a vase. Allegedly a bottom slank cut increase water absorptive capacity. But how should it works even though the watertubes in the stems have a smaller diameter than the port diameter? Watertransportation in a plant works with capillary force independend the port diameter. A mystery to me. Please let me say a scissors squeezes, a sharp knife doesn't. So a knife is better to took a cutting. Laurus nobilis is diecious. I'd like to gain advices about the different.

Hi, I learned propagation in college for horticulture. They taught us that creating a angled slash cut is the easiest way to differentiate between the bottom and top of a cutting where buds aren't immediately visible. Where people do thousands of these a day looking for a slash cut is simpler than looking for buds if you forget the cuttings orientation.

Hi Rose, yes reduces the surface area that water can evaporate of, since the cuttings don’t have any roots yet it’s most likely to dry up quick.
