The bag thing. I use a big zip lock bag and put a couple of cutting pots in the bag then water them, then close the bag up. BUT when there is just a little of the bag open I blow up the bag so it will sit up straight then zip the last bit closed. Now any water that evaporates will condense on the bag and run down the sides and be soaked up by the bottom of the pot. Obviously the zip lock seal is at the top for this method. Bag coverings in general really help cuttings or just make it easier for us I suppose.
@LearnToGrow1 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. I like your ziplock idea!

@LearnToGrow12 жыл бұрын
Hi Bay Leaf is a perennial so it will not die.
@donsherbs Жыл бұрын
@Lora The bay tree's shoot tip develops a stack of reddish-brown buds with bud-scales (which at a glance could easily be misinterpreted as a flower structure) just prior to a burst of rapid *vegetative* growth, i.e. stem elongation, of that tip. Not a big deal that you pruned it off and thwarted the tree's plans to grow more, but don't do it again. :) I haven't had my indoor bay trees flower before, but a Google image search suggests that the bay's flowers start as little balls at the base of leaves near the ends of branches.

So, in Vancouver BC, taking clippings in May/June, bagged, rooted by Aug/Sept and transplant to individual 4" pots un-bagged. I'm guessing they can't be hardened off and transplanted outside in the ground until the following spring or what would be recommended? Many thanks!
@LearnToGrow13 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, If you live in a cold climate where winter temperature is below 0 degrees F , then wait to transplant outside in spring. Bay Laurel is supposed to be hardy to 0 degrees F. If you decide to plant it out, do it 6 to 8 weeks before your first frost date. Otherwise wait and overwinter it till next spring. If your climate gets colder than 0 F, you need to bring it indoors every fall. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching! Misilla

My leaves have changed color, should they?
@LearnToGrow14 жыл бұрын
If they're yellow, it may need water, is the soil dry?
@RB-zc2of5 жыл бұрын
So cutting the tips of the leaves prevents them from drying out? Confused about the cutting of the leaf tips.
@LearnToGrow15 жыл бұрын
Hi Rose, yes reduces the surface area that water can evaporate of, since the cuttings don’t have any roots yet it’s most likely to dry up quick.

How do you tell if the bay plant is dead? Mine doesn’t have any leaf at all
@LearnToGrow14 жыл бұрын
Hi If the stem is brown or black. Some of mine looked like that when they died. I'm going to start new cuttings to root this year. Thanks for watching!

how long you put plastic bag over it?
@LearnToGrow12 жыл бұрын
Hi once they root I remove it. You can also start the cuttings outside when it’s warm and you don’t need to cover. It just helps keep humidity when it’s indoors.

Why do you snip the top two leaves before propagating the bay?
@LearnToGrow14 жыл бұрын
Hi! Snipping and removing some of the leaves prevents water loss or transpiration which can cause stress to the cutting if all the leaves are left intact and may not grow roots. Thanks for watching!

Did you try to just put the branch just in water? normally it needs one week to build roots. and one leaf is enough, you dont need to cut 2
@antoniodesousa17315 жыл бұрын
@ Benjamin Samardzic, when you say "one week to build roots", are you talking about bay leaf cuttings or other plants?? And, have you had success in rooting bay leaf cuttings "just in water"??

no rooting hormone? no heat mat?

I didn’t use any rooting hormone, but it’s a good idea to and I placed the pot in the warmest room without heat mat.
