Personally, I just leave mine in a semi-shaded place without any potting medium for it to sprout aerial roots before I pot mine up.

I hope you do, it's pretty easy once you figure it out. It needs a well-draining soil (succulent soil), and plenty of light. Ideally lots of direct sun, but it will do well in bright indirect light, the more the better. If you can provide over 10,000 lux that would be great, but even with just over 3,000 lux it can do ok :)

You can’t set it immediately in water after cutting, let it sit for a day or two to callous.

Yes, that is best practice, I would recommend everyone does it for best results. But it's not absolutely necessary. I rarely let mu cuttings callous and most of the time I'm successful

So I need roots like that before planting? This one is one of my faves. I find them on floor at store in puddles, where idiots sprayed w water really hard & almost killed. Then the called leaves already have roots growing in the puddle!

Hi Jessica, if you have an inch or two of roots, that's fine. But also, you can just stick a jade stem straight into soil, they are super easy to propagate :)

How bright should the spot be? I've had it in a not so bright spot for a few days, maybe 2-3 hours of evening sun, but I think I can already see 2 little white roots I think. What would you recommend?

Hi, you should give the cuttings plenty of bright, indirect light, ideally over 5,000 lux (500 FC). However, don't overexpose them to direct sunlight since the leaves can get sunburned if not gradually acclimated to direct sunlight. When exposing your jade plant to direct sun, make sure to do it gradually - give it one hour of early morning direct sunlight for 1 week before increasing by 2 hours of direct sunlight each following week, until it starts spending most of the day in direct sun. Good luck, it's great that it already has roots. This means you're doing everything right. 😊

It may have stem rot and if you try again make sure you let it callous

Hi, sorry for the late reply, I hope the plant is alive. However, even if you do everything right and provide the most optimal conditions, some cuttings will still rot. That’s just nature, we can’t control it. We can only provide the best possible conditions and hope for the best. Now, there are a few things you can do to increase your chances of success: 1) Increasing the warmth of the propagation medium, regardless of whether it's soil or water, by using a heat mat. Increasing the temperature by a few degrees significantly speeds up propagation. 2) Increasing the amount of light, more light increases photosynthesis and root formation. Either move the cutting to a brighter window or use a grow light. Don’t keep cuttings a few feet away from a window, but right in front of it. And don’t place cuttings behind walls next to a window - but in front of the window 3) If you're water propagating, use an air pump to constantly provide fresh oxygen to the water. Roots use oxygen and release carbon dioxide. A constant influx of oxygen increases propagation speed. If you’re propagating in soil, mix the soil with perlite to increase macro pores and the amount of oxygen in it. Hope this helps 😊

there’s different varieties you might just have one of the smaller varieties

You might not have a true jade plant (Crassula Ovata). There's a similar plant that a lot of people call a jade plant, but is actually called an Elephants bush (Portulacaria Afra) which is very similar, but is a different species with much smaller leaves but faster growth.
