Hey all, There is so much confusion around proper acclimation technique and why we do the things that we do. I hope to clear up some myths and misinformation through this video. After watching this I hope you can feel confident and relaxed the next time you order a fish, shrimp or aquatic plant online. Thanks to Aquarium Central for providing the livestock for use in this video. Check out their website here; aquariumfishonline.com.au/ Thanks for watching.

I'm currently in the process of setting up a tank and I want to get a betta fish for it (unsure if it will be ordered online or not yet) do I need to medicate the fish with anything before putting into a planted tank (I heard some medications are not good for the plants in the tank)?

Good informative video, thanks 👍 Should I be turning off my tank lights when I transfer the new fish in or is it not such a big deal? I currently do turn them off but would happily leave them on so I can monitor them from a distance if it's not such a big deal

I hope you read this and can help with more details. Do you not quarantine and pretreat your new fish? Can I add fish to my community tank directly after floating without an inbetween tank for weeks?
@BlakesAquatics
@BlakesAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
I dont mainly because i keep species only tanks. If i kept 1 large community tank I would quarantine vja observation over a month in a separate tank

@@BlakesAquatics ahh I see, thankyou so much. I am in Australia too, and your content is invaluable, since you have the same options available. If you don't mind my asking, do you think preemptively worming etc in a quarantine tank is advisable or only treat when there is evidence of fungus, worms etc.
@BlakesAquatics
@BlakesAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
Worming is one of the only things I would actually presumptively medicate for. Make sure you read the instructions carefully and keep in mind the major dewormers all target different worms (prazi, levamisole and there are a few others)

Hey mate, great video! Learnt a lot. I’m getting a couple rare plecos delivered my mail in a few days. Do u suggest drip acclimating them or the plop and drop method? I’ve always drip acclimated any fish I got from the shops. If so, is it safe to dose prime directly into the bag and then acclimate? Thank you :)
@BlakesAquatics
@BlakesAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
id plop and drop plecos. if you mean dose prime into the bag and then dripping into that instead of into a separate container then yes thats essentially the same thing i just find it easier to work with a rigid container than a bag. good luck!

So opening the bag, clipping it to the side of the tank, and adding half tank water isn't necessary ?
@BlakesAquatics

No and in fact its doing damage 👍

@@BlakesAquatics that's insane.. I never knew this. So the built up contaminants are activated with oxygen ? And, if the temp of the tank, and the bag of delivery is equal - no need for PH acclimation.. ? Within reason of course - if not drastically different..

They can survive in that bag for 4 weeks, says who? I want to see you do it.
@BlakesAquatics
@BlakesAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
Im not in to being unnecessarily cruel to fish. The point is that theyll die due to temperature before they die of starvation or polluted water. Rumballs fishroom did keep a flowerhorn in a bag for 2 weeks before letting it back out though with no consequences
@satguy
@satguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@BlakesAquatics Two weeks is not four weeks. Sorry to be so adamant on this but it's like canister filters. How much water they move is always followed by an astric. When you look you find out the quoted flow is with no loaded media, it's empty. For me the proof is in the astric.
@BlakesAquatics
@BlakesAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
@@satguy its nitpicking on a bit of an irrelevance... since you are talking about asterisks i did say UP TO 4 weeks. The fact of the matter is that its extremely unlikely that a fish would ever have to be in a bag for 4 weeks so worry about heat instead of anything going on inside the bag. You are extrapolating any inferred point beyond that
@satguy
@satguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@BlakesAquatics You and I both know that there are people on the internet who will do exactly that because someone on the internet said you could. That's my point, call it nitpicking, call It whatever you like, but people will think it's ok, because someone said they could. I have been doing this for over 50 years and seen a lot of stupid stuff done, because somebody said they could. Words have power, choose them carefully.
@BlakesAquatics
@BlakesAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
@@satguy i did choose them carefully.. in a temperature controlled environment a fish can survive in a bag for 4 weeks. I stand by that. Just because i dont wish to stress out one of my pets by doing it to them for the purpose of pleasing you doesnt mean that its not a possibility. The takeaway is to not panic about the bag, but concentrate on keeping them warm. The end.
