Let's look at how to properly Bleed a Hydraulic Floor Jack. How can you tell if your floor jack has air in the system. Bleeding air from a Floor Jack is required if it wont go up or if it comes down gradually after raising. Air in your hydraulic system is dangerous and needs to be expelled. I will show you how to fix and bleed your floor jack to make it like new and where the seals are for your floor jack if those are leaking. I also show you how to fill your leaking floor jack.

In today's video we look at rehabbing a failing floor jack. Before you throw away your old floor jack watch this video. If your floor jack is letting you down, "literally" then do not worry. I will walk you through the steps to bleed out the air and check to see if your seals are bad. Once you watch the entire video you should be able to diagnose and repair your own floor jack for free or a nominal fee if you need parts. Don't spend hundreds for a new floor jack when you can fix your old one and keep if lifting you up! If you have any jack related problems on a floor jack or bottle jack these methods should work for both. Any questions post them down below and I'll be happy to answer them for you.

@@noway1880 you've most likely allowed air to enter the hydraulic chamber. Thereby air is mixing with the hydraulic fluid. Not good. You need to bleed the jack of the air you permitted to enter the fluid reservoir. That's screw is usually set by the factory. It's most likely set at a happy medium like the three bears, not too tight or not too loose. Adequate fluid needs to be in the reservoir first. Then the seals need to hold the fluid inside the reservoir, in other words not leak. The screw is most likely tightened to the extent that the jack pumps up and when you loosen the handle the spring retracts it basically. The hydraulic fluid may be preloaded, with the jack in its relaxed state, under some degree of pressure beyond this minimal amount that the screw is tightened. I don't know to what extent it's tighten., But that's the basic theory of hydraulics and how the jack works.

The main problem with all these cheap jacks, is that they don’t hard chrome the pump piston, and the lifting piston, and then using O rings for seals. The pistons easily score,then damage the O rings, leading to leaks. You can find tractors and bulldozers that have been sitting outside after years of working, with cylinders that still work like new, because they are hard chromed, and use proper hydraulic seals.

Interesting and thanks. But instead of talking about getting stuck under a leaking jack, you should have stated that that is a no-no. You lift with a jack, then set it down on jack stands that WILL NOT let the car down on you. Then to let the car down, use the jack to lift it off the stands, remove the stands, then let it down with the jack. That way you can NEVER get stuck under a collapsing jack!

As I watched this at 4:30am I saw the bleeder for the first time in my life. I could only see the filler screw and the adjustment screw. I never knew to look forward of the handle. There it was, buried under 20 years of grime. I just went out (at 4:45am) and bled two junk jacks back to life. Saved me $500 or so. Thanks. You're absolutely right that the old school craftsman jacks or any old craftsman tools were some of the finest ever built. They were built so well that you could return any tool in exchange for a brand new replacement no matter how many years you owned them. Today's Craftsman is junk, they are not the same company and I wouldn't be surprised if China made them. Try taking a modern craftsman tool back today and exchange for a new one. They'll look at you like you're crazy. I will hold on to my 50+ year old craftsman tools forever.

I bought this same jack when we bought our first house, 16 years ago. The amount of lift I got per strokes been decreasing to the point that it flat out didn’t move the mechanism. I recently bought some jack oil and after adding some, it got half its stroke back. After using it a few times it went back to almost non-functionality and I was at a loss for ideas. I’m a plumber by profession so pumps, hydraulics, pneumatics and the general physics involved are all part of my daily life. I was so pissed off at myself that I didn’t think this hydraulic mechanism would need to have the air purged from it! It turns out the bleed valve bearing seal is leaking a little on mine so I gotta either replace or clean the spring behind the ball. I don’t know why I thought these things WOULDNT be able to last generations. They can last almost indefinitely if maintained. Great video!

It’s a year later now but the first thing you do with a brand new jack is to air bleed it . I like the screw in air bleed plugs better than the plastic / rubber push in plugs . Most screw in plugs have a small O Ring on them so after a year or two check that the O Ring isn’t cracked or torn.

Probably has leaking piston seals too. These jacks have a self bleeder in the internal cylinder which also holds the piston and oil. If you go as far as taking the jack all apart, make sure you use HI Pressure Seal on the piston. I have done many in my life time.

As far as the oil you use you are correct in not using normal motor oils and such and especially do NOT use Brake Fluid because it will eat the seals up. However all that jack oil is, is normal Hydraulic Fluid like used in any machine with hydraulic cylinders. Any hydraulic fluid you use in your tractor, excavator, ect will work just fine if you already have that around because you own machines/tractors. Transmission Fluid will also work safely in those jacks in a pinch because it's a type of Hydraulic Fluid but, it is also exponentially more expensive as well so using it is rather pointless. Same with Power Steering Fluid.

The screw he was using to bleeding the air out of should be removed and fluid added so the the piston inside is just covered. Bleeding process is the same. Jacks have air in the piston chamber for two Main reasons. A leak of oil(failed O rings) or the jack has be manipulated so that any air that should be there(a tiny amount just below that screw) has moved into the chamber(by picking up the jack and not keeping it level (ish) or the hack falling on it’s side etc.

I have been rebuilding hydraulic jacks for over 5 decades. I have never done anything to bleed the air than to loosen the go down valve (fluid return) and pump it several times and then close the valve. Lastly fill to proper level. I believe you are letting air out of the fill port. Your way does work, but it is much harder to do. If air does get into the system, most likely a leak is happening. In which case it should be resealed. If the jack drifts down without an external leak, the piston seal, the pump outlet check or the fluid return valve is leaking. Today only the very most high end jacks are made to be rebuildable. I think they are worth the cost.

Actually I DO know how to demonstrate the other way of bleeding the air BUT I chose not to. The method I chose is the most user friendly way of doing it. It is the best way for people with little to no experience dealing with jacks or how to bleed them. I make videos to help everyone, not just folks that are technically oriented. That is why I said simply to stay away from the other port instead of going into great detail as to the possible pitfalls of dealing with that side. As it is many people complain that I talk too much in my videos. Can't make everybody happy all the time. Have to pick what to show and what not to show.

@ModernDIYProjects

Both air and low fluid can lead to the bleeding down. Just crack open the bleed port and add a little fluid. If it doesn't help then try the air bleeding procedure. Both are simple and jack fluid is not that expensive. Don't over fill or it will create a spill out mess for you. Just add to slightly below the opening. Leave a small air gap, then close back up.

I was about to shit can the jack cause I know they are Chinese junk not worth rebuilding. Well ,after watching your video and all the naysayers comments saying your system won't do anything because they are made to self bleed blah blah blah .I thought prob wasting my time.I pulled the rubber fill plug and went all the way up an down several times ,didn't really see any bubbles ! I figured I ll top it off real good and overflowed it . Pumped it up and released it and I got a big air burp about half way down on release . I put plug back in and jacked up a 850 cc quad . Its been up all evening and not even dropped down onto jack stands. Before it would leak down in 5 min tops . So I say your method worked sir !! Thank you . I know hydraulics will do strange things at times, I ve seen it with car brakes over and over , air gets trapped in weird ways !

I doubt it was just air in the system. More than likely the 'U-Cup Seal' is wearing or wore out. That is why the jack will not stay up. A bit of a job to take the reservoir assembly off to replace the U-cup seal inside the reservoir but well worth the effort to replace that one part. Other that nothing else goes wrong with these old floor jacks other than the noted $1 'O'-ring inside the plunger bore that sometimes leaks oil.

Nice video. Bought myself a Biltema(swedish-finnish brand) that looks the same. Manual was also swedish-finnist-norweigian. This video makes pretty clear, how to bleed this jack. Thanks!

I don't quite understand what they mean when filling the floor jack how full should it be they said above the inner cylinder or something I don't quite understand is there a good picture of that somewhere or something?

One thing that I do religiously with all my hydraulic jacks floor, bottle and pallet is simply tighten the handle or petcock. On pallet jacks they usually have a pull release on the handle that is adjustable. And always use jack stands or wood! Never USE CINDER BLOCKS NEVER

Oh shit. I looked for a video to bleed my floor jack... And even better that's the exact one I have. Its done me right for 16 years. But now it slowwwwwlly lowers itself. Was thrilled to notice that it was slowly lowering, while I was under my truck.....

Yes, you should be thrilled to be under a vehicle supported only by a jack, if that was the case. Most people can't bench-press a three ton truck...not even a two ton truck.

Hi there. I have that same jack. When i have a vehicle jacked up sometimes it gets kind of hard to lower it down. Do you know why?
@ModernDIYProjects

Could be that the release valve is sticking internally not fully releasing the pressure. If you turn the valve back and forth a few times then it comes down, then that could be the problem.

My jack just started to drop under load. There is no sign of any external leakage of fluid. I've added jack oil and tried the bleed process several times but the jack still drops under load. Is it possible that air is still in system? or is it more likely there is a bad seal particularly the seal at the piston base? Thanks.
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is possible that there is still some air in the system, but it is also possible that one of the seals is leaking internally. This would explain why you can't see any signs of leakage. A rebuild may be in order (or a new jack if you don't want to mess with it).

I recently purchased this jack. While i attempted the purging procedures, on the step of rotating the handle, the handle wouldn't rotate and gears lock up. Also, the jack doesn't raise up. Is this a defect or easily repairable? Thank you for any advice in advance.
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 4 жыл бұрын
Hard to tell from far away like this. It could just be jammed up and you could muscle it loose. I have had that happen before. It could also mean there is internal damage and the entire gear box would have to be rebuilt or replaced. If possible I would try to get your money back unless you want to deal with a possible big issue. I wouldn't call it a simple repair but it is doable.

A poorly operating jack that fails and collapses as you're reaching for your pristine jack stand is more dangerous! Hence, a properly working jack is more important regarding safety.

@@pt68picaso wrong... when you place a jack stand...you only have part of on arm under the car to position it...so your safety exposure us limited in danger and time. When you have the stand in place, more of you body is exposed to hazards for a longer time....therefore the stand is more important.
@hyperbaricaxom1763
@hyperbaricaxom1763 2 жыл бұрын
@@pt68picaso You have zero logic and therefore completely wrong. You DON'T get under any vehicle while jacking it up and then reach for jack stands while under the vehicle! You jack the vehicle up (with faulty jack or not), then from outside the frame/body just use your arm to quickly position the jack stand under the frame. With the tires on the car will not fall on your arm, in any case. But Ken below is right. The jack stand holds the primary & foremost importance. Not the jack, because only idiots get under a vehicle, even for a second, just supported by a jack.

Harbor Freight used to sell a knockoff version of this exact same jack, down to every detail, from a company called Rhino Tools. I own that jack and it recently stopped working. At first it would just drift down over time, then it started drifting down within a minute or two, now it won't even go up. So I started shopping for a new jack, when it suddenly occurred to me, there must be a way to fix these things, rather than spending over $150 to replace it. Well low and behold, here it is. 👍
