I love how you partook of the same water that you gave the bromeliad. I do the same thing. I feel like it bonds me to my plants in a weird way. ❤

This is so important to share! Thank you! I recieved a bromelaid as a gift on my birthday and the poor thing had root rot before it even reached me. I repotted and sanitized the roots but she's still struggling. I have faith she will pull through lol I guarantee the store was watering directly through the soil and way too often

I have a Bromeliad that was given to me last summer, it came from my mother in law. She doesn't do well, with plants and left hers sitting in full sun, all day every day, which caused its leaves to scorch on the tips. I cut off the scorched ends of the leaves and tried to bring it back, but I believe it had to much damage done already, but thankfully, I did get 2 pups from her. I just cut off the remainder of the mother plant, so now I am left with 2 pups that are about 4 or 5 inches high. When I water them, I always put the water down inside of the leaves, but it seems to just run out, and a few hours later, it seems like it's bone dry again... Am I doing something wrong, or are they just sopping up the water much quicker than before, because now they don't have the mother plant to feed off and it's the growing season again?

I would switch to watering the soil until they’re large enough with a large enough cup to hold ample water

@marzipanmango Жыл бұрын
For most plants you're right, watering like that will cause a ton of rot. But bromeliads are different; most are epiphytes (aka grow on the sides of trees) and their roots are mainly there to anchor them, not to take up nutrients. I don't even water the orchid bark or branches I have my bromeliads in; I just mist the leaves with rainwater or distilled water daily and a little runs into the cup. If I accidently add too much water I tip it upside down, and let it dry for a few hours. Then mist again so a little water runs down. I like to have a centimeter or less of water in the cup. But different broms have different requirements. Like a guzmania does take up a little nutrition with its roots so should be planted in a very well draining mix (ie. a mix of spaghnum, orchid bark and a little soil) vs a neoregelia or vriesa which shouldn't be planted in soil, rather attached to something like wood or in orchid bark just to stabilize it. I actually kept a neoregelia for almost a year slotted in a wire rack with no soil, just misting, and it did great! As long as the air is humid, the light is bright enough, and there's a little water falling into the cup now and then, they're pretty easy to keep!
