I did exactly the same experiment last year:) and my conclusion is: if you want bushier and bigger plant leave the pops on the mother plant. The babies grow bigger and faster on their mum and she may even produce more babies later on - like mine did. I don't know about flowering yet, but my guess is that the mother plant will flower quicker as the kids grow faster on her :)

My daughter gave me a Bromeliad with pinkish brachts which have now turned light grey/brown, obviously dead. Not knowing what to do next I luckily found your video which has been a great help, especially about the pups which I now know I can pot on, and look forward in time to seeing them grow and produce their brachts. Thank you!

Thank you!! I got one as a gift today, even though I have a lot of plants I never had one of the Bromelids before. She is beautifully orange red, but her pot is super tightly packed in wet coconut and it did seem a bit suffocating in there. So I am glad my intuition was right. She already shoots out pups on all sides. I put her next to my orchids that also love bright light but nothing direct. I hope she and her babies will do well.

Thank you for your kind comments! I'm so glad you found it helpful. By the way, don't be afraid to give a plant a home, even if it doesn't work out you will have learned and enjoyed it for some time. I think they will last longer with you than most homes they might go to and if they don't sell at the store within a few weeks they often go in the skip! So if you think of it that way you are rescuing them! :-) Good luck with your Bromeliad and keep us posted on how you're doing, if you have any questions just let me know. Andy

@HouseplantHacks

Yes, you can repot the pups but they wont grow up quick enough to always keep flowering for your spot, it could take a few seasons for the pups to mature enough to flower.

I'm from central Virginia. Very few greenhouses around anymore. I'm not sure, but I think to replant one of these, you use half & half citrus and orchid potting mix. Everyone agrees the soil has to drain very well and not to over water. You can get crown rot.

@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary, You can't really damage them from spraying water onto the leaves too much, as long as your water is not too hard, if you use rainwater or deionised water its even better. you can spray them multiple times per day and it will benefit the plant as you are adding humidity around the plant which will help it stay happy and healthy.

But no pups have grown. Will the pups shoot out after the mother plant flowers and starts to go brown or do you think the nurse took those pups away from me for themselves? 😮 Is this plant useless now?

Fab video!! I need a bit of advice. I’ve just purchased one of these beauties from the shop, however it’s in regular potting soil. I know you shouldn’t repot things quickly after you rehome them but I know they shouldn’t be in this mixture... What should I do?
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
They are an epiphyte which means they don't take up nutrients from the soil but from the air and moisture in the centre of the plant, the roots are just to anchor the plant in the pot so it;'s not too essential to worry about the soil really. I wouldn't worry too much.

Hi, I dint know how long the p pop upp pop a take to mature, this is the first time I have tried raising Bromeliads from pups so we will have to waits and see, it could potentially be a few years before a “flower” develops.

Can you show how and where to water the pups, since they don’t have their cups yet? 🤗

So, when the flower turns brown, you cut out off?
@HouseplantHacks

Yes, it won’t flower again.

Dependent upon the bromeliad species, consider slowly overtime remove external leaves from the mother plant. It is also possible to cut-off the mother entirely at its base. However, when they are in a garden bed ... just watch them enjoying a sunshade.

When I pulled the pups away from the mother plant they didn’t have any root at all. I planted them anyway but I don’t think they will take😢

I'm not sure, I don't think so, I still have the mother growing and it hasn't produced any more pups since.

There is no rush, you can keep them together permanently or separeate them once they grow bigger.

Can you put cold tea on these plants as a food
@HouseplantHacks

Yes, I believe that black tea is a good source of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus.

If I cut the scorched part from a plant which has become burnt, will that leaf continue to grow? Would I be better to just tear off and throw away the burnt leaf?
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
It's up to your really, if it's just the tip of the leaf then cutting it off would be fine, it will still be a useful leaf, if you have a large part of it that is burnt then you might be better off just cutting the whole leaf off, it will push out a new one to replace it in time.

What kind of things that needed to mix the media?
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks Жыл бұрын
Small bark mulch is good, most houseplant mixes will be ok too, they aren't especially fussy with growing media.

When you say to spray them with water often, does that mean every other day? Every four days? Daily?
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks Жыл бұрын
Misting with water is a tricky subject, the water will evaporate quite quickly depending on where you live and how warm/humid it is. Misting is only benefitial while it keeps the plant slightly wet, once it dries out there are no additional benefits so to keep the benefits of misting constantly you would need to mist several times per day, which isn't really practical, a humidifer will create a better environment but at a cost.
