Ten tips to prevent getting Eye Flu ( Conjunctivitis )
In the video, Expert Eye specialist Dr Sanjeev Duggal from Duggal eye hospital Jalandhar shares some handy tips on preventing eye flu viral infects
1. Practice good hygiene: Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes, which can worsen the condition or spread the infection. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before and after touching your eyes.
2. Use a cold compress: Applying a cold compress to the affected eye can help soothe the discomfort and reduce inflammation. Apply a cold compress using a clean, soft cloth soaked in water to the closed eye for a few minutes.
3. Artificial tears: Use artificial tears or lubricating eye drops to relieve dryness and irritation associated with conjunctivitis. Make sure to use preservative-free drops if you plan to use them frequently.
4. Avoid contact lenses: If you wear contact lenses, it's best to avoid using them until the conjunctivitis has resolved. Contact lens use can aggravate the condition and slow down the healing process.
5. Clean eye discharge: If any crusty discharge is around the eyes, gently clean it using a clean, moist cotton ball or soft cloth. Use a different cotton ball or fabric for each eye to avoid spreading the infection.
6. Avoid eye makeup: Refrain from using eye makeup while you have conjunctivitis, as it may worsen the symptoms and can introduce more bacteria into the eye area.
7. Prescribed medications: If your healthcare professional determines that bacteria cause your conjunctivitis, they may prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment to help clear the infection. Follow the prescribed dosage and duration.
8. Allergy management: If the conjunctivitis is due to allergies, your doctor may recommend antihistamines or other allergy medications to alleviate the symptoms.
9. Isolation and hygiene: Conjunctivitis can be contagious, depending on the cause. Be cautious of getting infected by NOT using contaminated articles, such towels, pillows, or personal items related to the eyes. Stay away from swimming pools during the infection period.
10. Visit an eye specialist] If you suspect you have conjunctivitis or eye flu, you must see a doctor or eye specialist (ophthalmologist) for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
