As an Amazon Influencer, I earn from qualifying purchases. Pruning Blackberries is easy to demonstrate, and easy to do. Pruning (or "pinching") the blackberry canes will encourage the growth of "laterals". Those are the side branches on new canes that will produce most of the blackberries. Pruning the canes will also stabilize the canes making it more difficult for high winds to blow the canes over and possibly ruining the cane completely.
This video will show close up, in HD so you can be sure you are doing it correctly.
In a couple of weeks, I'll be pruning the laterals too. So make sure you are a Subscriber and have clicked the "Bell" below so you can be notified when that video is published.
Prune your blackberries and raspberries. You'll be amazed at the production you get.
Thanks for watching, and Stay Safe!

I just got my order from Bob Wells. I am doing four Prime Ark Freedom Blackberries. I am doing the same as you. I got a good supplier of those big protein tubs. Picking up a few of the supplies today so I get get them started. I love watching about the container garden and especially fruit tree's. I have terrible soil here at my home. (Edna Tx) I have some mobility issues with bad arthritic knees so the container/raised bed gardening works for me.

That is awesome! I suggest making my "Hybrid Tubs" instead of the regular ones. They are easier to make and work great. Here's my video of the "Hybrid" ones: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJLHeXWXo5xgeKs

@@BIGALTX That's what I actually did. They came out pretty good. I got the Blackberry plants I got from Bob Wells plated. Two are stating to leaf out but the other two have no leaves, but seem to be green. Gonna have to wait and see. Your plants look great so I was very impressed with the results. I'm hoping for the same. I also planted a Pineapple Guava in a "Hybrid" wicking tub, so I got five total. Can wait to see the results. I am enjoying all your vids. :-)

So this summer my new blackberry plant (1 year).. the heat..the heat..the heat..zone 9b south of new Orleans...it's in a large .container ..it's looking sunburned?!?!? It's in a container.should I move it to a less sunbaked area?? I wasn't sure where to put it at first and we had recovery still going on from hurricane Ida ..so it's mobile 😂. The heaviest construction is done so I'm searching for a permanent area for it. Any suggestions? Most of the trees that blocked the heat of the day.àre gone. Most of my garden has melted away this year . Any suggestions?

I am always so jealous of how far your garden has progressed by April. Then I remember August. This Ohioan would collapse in the Texas heat. I will be starting my own blackberry patch as soon as it's warm enough. We had snow last week, so there's a bit to go yet.

Diane Ladico I have already gotten my first tomato, and a few blackberries. Garden looks amazing. I’ll be putting some videos up of the garden very soon. As for the heat… I’ve been here all my life so I’m kind a used to it. But I could never get used to the cold weather y’all have to endure up there.

My prime ark freedom (from stark bros) I planted late spring look nothing like yours. They don't grow straight up, but right now in sept they are up, sideways, and creeping on the ground from out of the wicking tubs. Not sure how to prune them at this point, what to cut, not cut, can I cut too much. I had made a trellis just like you did at begining of summer, but not sure what to do now since they never really grew straight up like yours so I never pruned. Need to do SoMETHING now though, any recommendations on where to start?

Some berries "sprawl" a little the first year. Only cut out completely the canes that are DEAD. Can't describe how to prune in a comment, but regular pruning is covered in several of my videos. Here's the Playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLutBw50GI1zw9M4UxWAN3n9yeJ_WYS8TD

I have a new prime ark freedom growing from one main stem but the growth is halfway up the stem. I have about 5 inches of stem and i am afraid it may eventually break. Can i bury that stem up to where the growth starts? I didn’t know if it would rot them stem or not

Do you ever have problems with birds eating the berries? I read that berries need shade in 9b when it gets really hot. I was going to plant them under a tree that would provide afternoon shade until I read in a few books not to because it would compete with water and nutrients. Shade or not to shade?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 7 ай бұрын
I tie CD's or DVD's on a string and let them wave in the wind. I think their reflection scares off the birds a little, but not altogether. NO, I would NOT plant in the shade. Blackberries love the heat and NEED full sun to produce. When it gets 95F or so they will stop blooming, but will still grow like crazy. Don't be scared of the heat. They will do fine. 👍😃

Howdy! What do you call your trellis system? It’s not a V trellis or an I trellis - it is sort of like a rectangle box trellis as you have the wires running along the sides and back around like rectangle. I have my prime ark freedoms growing along my wood privacy fence and was thinking of making a rectangle trellis like yours or trying to squeeze in a narrow v trellis? What do you suggest? Thank you!
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 4 жыл бұрын
So far this one works well. I'm going to add a few more posts since the berries have gotten so big. They are really weighing down on the wires, so a post in between the other T posts might help. So...I would use this method, but put your T-Posts about 10 to 12 feet apart instead of 25 feet like they are here. I don't see any problems with it so far :)

You can go either way... pick or not pick. Shouldn't matter if it's only one berry per plant. If it was a lot of berries I might say pick them off to give the plant more energy for growth.

No. That patch died out for two reasons... blackberry plants that were getting old and gopher devastation. That's why I'm raising them in containers now. I had stopped the U-Pick a few years ago due to my concern for liability... someone getting hurt. Regular homeowners insurance wouldn't have covered it.

I have to admit your thumb is "GREEN". I ordered four of the Prime Ark Freedom for BobWells Nursery. Got my "Texas Prepper" discount, and Planted them in wicking tubs. Followed almost to the "T" what you have done. It's been now over a month, and all I got on one plant is two leaves. No growth at all on the other plants. All the other plants I have in wicking tubs are doing fantastic. I've reached out to BobWells for guidance. I feel that three of the four plants are not going to make it.

TexasPrepper2 I live in Edna Texas. I wrote Bob Well nursery and they replied and said that when they shipped my order, there was concerns that the plants weren’t ready. So they are shipping me new plants. 😊 yes, I did fertilize with a 10-10-10. One is hanging on but the others still haven’t bud out, but the stems seem to be still alive.
