I just planted Asiatic lilies for the first time and I am new to the plant so looking for this type of info. I have had them a short time and they are now getting to the end of their blooming even though it is only early March. I live in central Florida. What I don't see is where this video was made. If you live in a warmer climate, do the tall plants shown here stay green and that tall all year round or do they still die off and then need to be cut down? Can they regrow to that 6 foot height in one season? Even though the video seems informative it leaves much unanswered.

So let’s say you cut back the stem by 1/3 of the total height while it is still green. Will that effect the number of blooms or just the height the following year or both? I just purchased some Casablanca bulbs but would rather the plant stay under 4 feet tall if possible. If I cut it back a little bit more like I said around 1/3 will that help it stay a tad shorter the following year?

Question for a lily expert: I knocked off asiatic lily buds way before it was ready to bloom while I was weeding. Will the plant try to send side stems with more buds?
@mr.dahliaking.2027 жыл бұрын
nope. I grown lilies for 13 years now, and I have done many experiments, and a lot of accidents have happened with a lawn mover. If you broke your lily in it's growing period, forget it. Only the next year will it start to grow again, hense if the bulb underground don't suffocate or rot. You might want to dig that bulb out and put it a medium 15+ cm pot and leave it there till next spring, when shoots get 5 - 10 cm high, carefully transplant it into the garden flower bed, trying your best not to disturb the root system. Other vise it will dry out all the buds and only produce leaves, if that. I've tried all that, You can really trust me. oh and btw, if you are going to do that, in the winter time, don't leave the pot exposed to the bare cold, cause the bulb in the pot will freeze, put it in some compost bin or in unheated shed, and plant outside only when all signs of frost is 100% is gone if you sprout it indoors. Othervise the tender shoots will became brown stinky mush and the bulb will 110% die that year.

All I do is wait until the stems go yellow in autumn, and then cut the stem back to about 4 inches / 10 cms above soil level. I don't do any other pruning, unless I want to cut a stem or two for putting in a vase in the house, or if a stem gets weather damaged then I just cut it off just below the damage point. Anyway it seems to be working for us, here is how they look in summer kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZSmdqGBaNyqmbs

You should dig them up in the fall when the plants died back and split the bulbs. Replant the smaller bulbs somewhere else or throw as they won't bloom for a few years and replant the big bulbs.

@mr.dahliaking.2027 жыл бұрын
no, perennials form a flower bud or buds inside the bulb itself in winter, and in spring they come out and bloom. After they done blooming all that's left is a stem and leaves. Only a very few perrenials do the "bloom all season long" thing, such as callas, dahlias, irises (sometimes) daylilies, ranunculus and hydrangeas.

They are little baby bulblets that grow on a stem and when stem dries up and leans to the ground they sprout roots and pull themselves in ground and in third year start flowering themselves. Now that is a serious weed :D worse than bindweed probably . . . but at least a appreciated and beautiful weed :D
@mr.dahliaking.2027 жыл бұрын
Snipping out anthers and stamens are really bad practice, don't do that, here's why - I've done an experiment, witch lasted three years with three different kinds of lilies - trumpet lilies, asiatic lilies and oriental lilies - every year I snipped out anthers and stamens out of two fresh flowers each year and leaving them on the stem, and two flowers cut of and brought in doors. Every flower from all species withered in a week, tho flowers with stamens and anthers intact lasted up to 4 weeks indoors and 6 weeks outside on a plant. Now why is that? Cause the flower is a reproductive organ of a plant. It is a negative organ, witch means it doesn't photosinthesize and does not produce energy, it only drains it for sustaining itselves. When you cut out anthers and stamens the plant feels that that particular flower got damaged, hense no anthers and stamens, so why should that flower be alive? it will not create seeds. Plant decide to kill the flowers and they wither 75% quicker. So DO NOT CUT OUT ANTHERS AND STAMENS, AFTER ALL IF YOU DON'T TOUCH THE STAMENS THEY WILL NOT STAIN YOU AND YOUR SOROUNDINGS. IT IS A VERY BAD PRACTISE, MY 3 YEAR EXPERIMENT SHOWS IT QUIET CLEARLY. DO NOT CUT OUT ANTHERS AND STAMENS! ! ! ! ! ! ! YOU'RE ONLY RUINING MAGNIFICIENT AND GORGIOUS FLOWERS! ! !

hi there I am from the tropicana county name Guyana in the Caribbean I will like to know if I can grow Lily here it's hot true out the year
@mr.dahliaking.2027 жыл бұрын
If you want to grow lilies in places where cold temperatures are not present, plant the lilies, and when they flower take record by inserting a stake next to the stem or somehow know that that perticular lily flowered, then when leaves dry up to the ground and you can pull out rotted and dried stem out of the ground you'll know that the bulb is ready for dormancy, but when there's no winter, the bulb will wait and not sprout until it dies underground, without recieving any winter. So take the record of the bulbs that flowered and then after a month dig them up and clean them, then put in brown paper bags and store in a fridge then after a week in a freezer for about 1 - 1.5 months and put in fridge for a week or two until sprouts shows up, if not, just pluck them in ground and they will come back with gorgious flowers and continue the cycle every year. Now, before putting them in a freezer, you should gradually cool them in fridge, then put in freezer, cause if you pull them out of warm 15'C+ ground and put in freezer -15'C they will freeze up and rot, so gradually cool them in fridge first for a week. And the same with after dormancy, pull them out and let them thaw out gradually in fridge, only then plant them in ground, if you will plant them straight from freezer to 15'C+ ground you will get them inner seasons mixed and they may not flower, or even may not sprout and rot underground, so gradual detemperising is crucial thing to do with artificial dormancy for lilies. The same thing can be done to irises, tulips, daylilies, crocuses, hiacynths, exetra. . ..

how did she grow that giant lilly, is it a hybrid or just years of growing. please help
@mr.dahliaking.2027 жыл бұрын
If you want to get lilies that are giant like that, you need to purchase your lilies as early as possible, so they will be without early sprouts aka dormant, and they need to be as large as possible. asiatic should be just enough to cover your four fingers, and orientals should be larger that your palm. Othervise you will have to wait for the second year to reach this gigantism. and you need to prepare a perfect soil for them. Dig out a 1 feet wide and 4 feet deep hole for each bulb you are going to plant (good practise is to plant asiatic - 25 inches apart, and oriental - 1 feet apart) and add peat, perlite and compost mix - 2 : 1 : 5 and plant the bulbs 1 feet deep. Plenty of spring fertilizer should be in primary place. And no shade. Full sun, and lots of water when dryer seasons approach your area. Happy growing, update me in fall how you succeded! Will be waiting to hear from you :) PS Oriental lilies are among the fussiest lilies you can grow. Spray organic pesticides and fungicides even if you see just a speck of fungi or one pest. Othervise, your lily will look like junk.

I have all these lilies (except lilium lily, lilium is a latin for just a lily) 1. oriental lilies are the bigger, longer lasting, much more fussier, later flowering, fragrant (altough the fragrance for some people cause a savare allergic reaction, suc has my mother ;( so yeah. . . ) and much more harder to grow versions of a simple fragrantless asiatic lily. 2. asiatic (not astatic) a s i a t i c (hense from a word Asia) lilies are the simplest and esiest and most color having range of lilies, that multiply all natural, don't need lifting every fall (orientals if you leave them in ground and don't divide them next year you only have a three or two flowers, instead of 13 or 14, and the plant will be smaller, and each year without lifting it will get smaller and smaller until one year it will not come back, it will die) and are not as fussy as orientals are (fussy as all hell :P, especially oriental doubles) and they are not as big, and have quiet many dwarf varietys, perfect for borders. And the best plus, if you get really good amount of fertilizer and peat moss, and much sun on them each year you could have each plant having 20+ flowers on a stem! ! ! They are my favorites, cause they don't have all that fussyness that orientals has. . . 3 stargazer lily is a oriental lily. Stargazer is a variety's name on the market (cause you know, 'stargazer' sounds cool and invading) But all it is is just a variety's name. Lilium orientallis 'stargazer' (latin name) There are also other kinds of lilies, try googleing them: lilium regale, trumpet lilies, lilium longiforum, martagon lily (I have a few of them, absolutely stunning flowers, you must try them) lilium speciosum, easter lily, tiger lily, lilium auratum, lilium bulbiferum (looks like asiatic, but it's not, it has a furr on the flower buds and has a massive fragrance, but they are even fussier that orientals, the best luck I had with them with all the effort I have was only 11 flowers on a stem) lilium formosanum (have one of them, you can't get them very easely, cause they multiply absolutely horrificly, just ain't going to do that, over the past 12 years from one plant only three plants were made, Since they are not available, and believe me everyone that say they have some to sell on ebay and amazon are only scammers, I've tried that, mu grandma had five of them in her very old garden, she was born there, her grandma had these lilies, and they gave me one bulb) and that's basically it. Try googleing these lilies, you would love to see the flowers :)

😅 not me rethinking that I planted 10 of these in single pot in my front yard and not realizing they’d grow so tall 😂

That plant is as tall as you. Dang.

I wouldn’t cut that way, it takes away the beauty away! Just remove them whenever they are starting to bloom in the arrangement.

Hi Gina! As Marianne mentioned in the video, she grows tall lilies by leaving as many leaves on the plant as possible so that they can seed new plants the next year. Marianne also uses Osmocote, a slow-release plant food, to consistently feed her flowers. You can learn more about Osmocote and why passionate gardener's like Marianne love it here: www.plantersplace.com/osmocote-plant-food/ Thanks for watching and happy gardening!

Should be titled 'how to cut lilies' not how to prune them. You do not 'prune' lilies.

So what? Why do you care? We are here to learn about lilies; not here to listen to you indulge your judgmental hate on an innocent person.
