I thought I would bring you guys along for an average day in the life type video with me as I install & tune a 117ci Lowrider ST with an A.P.E CR485 Power Plus Kit.
I cover correct pushrod adjustments for the Screamin' Eagle Adjustable pushrods specifically along with installing the lifters to air better oil feed to them.
I show you how I 'prime' new lifters which I have been doing for over 8 years now with NO issues whatsoever. Yes I know there are vacuum tools out there that work great, but the way I do it is proven & is something you can do at home with great results.
This motorcycle also received a few other after upgrades thanks to Cycle-Rama & Alpha Performance Engines.
I touch on pinion shaft run-out as well while showing you the tool I use from Elliott Motorcycles. Get that tool & others here: elliottmotorcy...
I show you how I find TDCC a very easy way.
I had fun with this video while trying to make it a little different than my usual content. This is a very typical day for me at the shop minus the other Tech's being away on holidays which I why you'll notice I was talking to the camera a little more than normal. If you are just coming across this video & my channel there is LOADS of more in depth content showing Camshaft installations, piston & cylinder installs, Compensator upgrades etc & Dyno Tuning.
Be sure to check them out if you are interested.

Another absolutely fantastic video! So informative and as someone earlier commented very detailed. Your attention to the details is very valuable and your honesty on different upgrades whether it’s a cam,exhaust,oil pump etc also valued! I for one listened to your cam plate and pump upgrade video review and on your recommendation and went with the SE Big sucker oil pump and plate just got bike back yesterday running like a dream! Keep up the good work 👌🏻

I did the oil can but it's never reliable enough. What I did was get a mason jar and one of those automatic vacuum jar sealers for 15$ on Amazon. Does EXACTLY what those big expensive vacuum machine does for a tiny fraction of the cost and it's tiny and has household uses too. I will always do the vacuum robot method from here on out. Cheap, perfect pump up, and ultra simple. I'm making a video on this soon.

Redoing my comment as it seems to have vanished probably my fault. But hey ho.. Another fantastic video really great content and valuable technical and practical info. Your honest opinion of various upgrades wether cam exhaust oil pumps and the plethora of other parts is also very valuable. I for one watched your cam support plate and oil pump combo review of S&S Fueling and SE recently explaining the pinion run out tolerance was so good to hear as I went for the SE big sucker plate and pump based on your review. I got the bike back after this install yesterday and it’s running like a dream. Keep up the great work Tommy 🤟🏻

No apologies needed , great to see the things we might be considering buying for our bikes actually being installed rather than just reading about it on some message board or other . do you favour the SE pushrods over others or are they all similar in terms of ease of use quality performance longevity etc one of the last things ive got to buy after following your essentials for cam swap video

Great question! Firstly thanks for the positive feedback and support. Secondly, the adjustable pushrod quality between brands is great. The S&S Quickee option are great & I have never seen a issues with them. They are much thinner than the Screamin Eagle option but that's about it. Both have different thread pitches too buy that does not effect anything.

Happy Thanksgiving my friend, love your videos, quick opinion, lifter cuffs, I have watched your other videos that your have said you have never seen one fail, what’s your opinion in not even risking breaking the bolt off and just leave them on and put the lifters in from the bottom? I have been reading more people seem to be doing this just to take the risk factor out of snapping that dam bolt off.
@MasterTechMiller
@MasterTechMiller Ай бұрын
That's absolutely fine to do & I do it ALL THE TIME when doing basic cam jobs. The good thing about the plastic lifter cuffs is they actually hold the lifters in place with the Cam removed so there is no need to remove the lifters or use magnets to hold them.

Enjoy your videos, very informative. Wondering about your thoughts on using the Cycle Rama 515 on the 24 gen 2 117. I have a 24 Road Glide and am thinking of going with the bigger Screaming Eagle tb and intake and replacing the stock head and base gaskets to bump up the compression. Will also be running a D&D billet cat. Zippers makes a "bolt in" cam with .530 lift so I was wondering if the CR 515 would still work if going to a .030 head gasket and thinner base gasket.
@MasterTechMiller
@MasterTechMiller Ай бұрын
I'd personally just run the CR485 instead as it has the same timing events as the CR515 except the .030" lower lift. The effort & expense involved to increase your compression ratio to just run a stage 2 cam is not worth it in my opinion. If you are going to the effort to take the heads off to put a thinner gasket on there, why not go up in displacement to really capatilse on running the CR515
@dc26
@dc26 Ай бұрын
@@MasterTechMiller Thanks for the reply. I actually enjoy doing the work because I don't get to do it that often but I was trying to save the expense of a big bore kit as well. Then of course would come head porting, another expense lol. I was just trying to figure out how to squeeze the most out of a stage 2.

Great video Tommy as always. These videos is what made me choose the CR 483 in my '24 heritage 114 and man did it wake up! I'd love to hear your advice as to control the added heat caused by the additional horsepower. Do you recommend a fan or a fan assisted oil cooler for amped up engines?
@MasterTechMiller
@MasterTechMiller Ай бұрын
The bike should not be running noticeably hotter after a stage 2 cam kit. If you have noticed a drastic change in the heat of the engine I would be inclined to have the tune revised to ensure the Air/Fuel ratios are in check. It may be running a little too lean of you have noticed a warmer feeling engine. Having the tune slightly richer to air in thermal management & helping to reduce combustion temps is key to the longevity of the engine. When tuned correctly, your fuel economy will not suffer drastically & your engine temps should not change at all from factory, intact, should almost lower slightly fuel to larger exhaust duration of just about all stage 2 bolt in cams out there

Hey mate any chance of any twin cam mods and upgrades? I know you work at a dealership and mainly do m8 things. just a little repetitive with parts and builds love watching your channel but a lot of content is starting to get very similar. Not trying to be negative just some more versitle content.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep it in mind. I'll see what I can do to mix things up a little more, as you are aware, Twin Cam engine builds & Cam jobs are few & far between these days but I'll do my best make a video on the next one through the doors

If the lifter is pre loaded too much the lifter will hold the valve open slightly. With the Screamin Eagle pushrods, this would be somewhere around 25 flats of pre load. That's 10 flats over the reccomended 15 flats I outlined in the video. On the other hand, if the lifter was not pre loaded enough the valve train would be very noisey. In this situation, I would call too little pre load around 8 flats from zero lash. There is a bit of room to move each way from the suggested 15 flats if you were after some "fine tuning". I would happily recommend anywhere between 11 to 18 flats of preload as guide. So in short, don't panic too much trying to be spot on 15 flats. It's not a huge deal

CR 485 in 128 or 131??
@MasterTechMiller
@MasterTechMiller Ай бұрын
Depending on the heads you're using. If your running a 128 or 131 with stock heads or a mild porting/tidy up job the CR485 is perfect to run. If you have a set of CNC ported heads with +1mm valves you should go with the CR515. The 515 is the exact same as the 485 as far as timing events are concerned, the 515 just has .030 more lift.
