Well done!!! You've made a choice to be happy rather than keep struggling to match up with society's idea of "success".I really look forward to seeing you, your family and your homestead blossom as you let the FUN come back into doing what you love 💖

I would give a lot of something to have a garden tomato right now! Rest and regeneration are important so you can be pumped about organizing seeds, looking at seed/plant catalogs, and planning for next year. Also, doing some of those discarded inside projects. You are definitely not less because you don’t want to peddle your veggies! I quit a job that I pined for and then got, and it made me miserable. I had to let go of the idea that I should do it, my life is sooooooo much better not doing it. ✌️ ❤ 🍅 🌱

Hey Honey, I want to pass along a couple ideas we have employed for our garden and greenhouse. #1-For the Voles, Install "hardware cloth", 1/2" mesh beginning about 6" down in the ground around the perimeter of any root veggies; with a concrete block on top like a step. This prevents intrusion from their path to your tubers. #2- Install a "2nd wall" of vinyl sheeting over your hoop-tunnel, spaced out 4" from the outer one, which will give you a barrier of air as insulation. I saw this being done by a fellow in BC. And he certainly is in a more northern latitude than you guys are! He said, that the temp inside the double-hoop attained 80F during the day with ventilation. And 40's to 50's at night, using plenty of organic ferts to provide some continuous heat. After applying the treatment for the Voles, we've had no more incursions and destruction of our root veggies in the conventional garden. And with our 16x24 greenhouse, which is rather unusual, I used Poly-Acrylic panels (Lexan), which is constructed like cardboard as you look at it from the ends. The whole structure is covered with these 2x4-ft panels, inside and out. But with 4" walls this gives us the dead air space insulation was eluding to. Then over the outside, we installed the typical GH liner over the exterior panels to ensure no leakage from rain and sweating. We made provision for summertime, so that specific side panels can be removed, and the tough reinforced covering rolled up to deal with the summer heat. In addition, we have several solar-only exhaust fans to help regulate the environment. Then in the winter, we also use a dehumidifier, and a supplemental heater to regulate the air space. We have grown veggies (tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, greens, eggplant, onion, etc. in our GH all winter last year with outside temps dipping down into the single digits! But the temps inside the GH remained above 38F at the lowest, with no heater on, to a common 45-48F as a rule. But this would never be possible if it weren't for the double-glazing technique I've employed. Oh, and our GH is on an exceptionally thickened, concrete slab we had poured, due to the slope of the site. I would include pix, but as you know, GPS coordinates are rather revealing. Hope these applications will give you some food for thought! And thanks for your sharing with all of us.

Be inspired, and be inspirational.. learn and teach. It’s the way I’ve gotten here through life. I’ve considered that when work ceases to be fun. Find something different to do! Life is short in the grand scheme of universal time. Don’t be unhappy. Don’t be miserable. Do what you love, and love what you do. Find the love. Embrace the joy….. and be inspired. Be inspirational. All will benefit, as we’ve come here and enjoy your content. You have nurtured skills in a age old craft that is, can, and will sustain your family and community. Just do what is manageable in this time. You are doing well 🤜🤛☺️

So true Kim. That "anticipation of Joy" is the pursuit of happiness. Sales can be the destroyer of the joy anticipated. Here's something I anticipate joy in, seeing the cold day when you boiling the water to scrape one of the hogs. There must be a shelf life on one of them and the weather is right for crackling.

I wouldn’t even call that quitting. You’re stopping doing something that you don’t enjoy. Why would anyone continue doing something that they don’t enjoy? You see people in the corporate world doing that all the time because they’re making great money. However, when you talk to them, they are the most unhappy people on the planet. They’re doing exactly what you’re talking about. Working towards the next logical step. In some crazy way, they think if they can just get to the next logical step, they’ll be happy. But they never are. If you give something a try, and you find out it’s not what you’d hoped or expected it to be, the smart thing to do is pivot towards something you know you love doing. I think you’re doing the right thing! I’m proud of you for being able to make such a difficult decision, and move towards something that works better for you!

There are many business models that can suit. Many others have said the magic is the flowers, and I do agree with that. Maybe have open days or hours, and let people pick. Charge by the pound. Done. I would love that. I would love to arrange my own for any number of small gatherings that I need with flowers or just to deliver to friends on a whim. There is another farmer I follow who is selling tree sampling and making the most profit on just those - sticks with a root. He only sells bulk, online, and only a few times a year. You get to decide what does suit. I know you will evolve to what is the next best right thing for you.

I upsized everything for market, had exact feelings you are having. Gave up market, figured out a good number of harvest baskets, I sell to individuals, mostly word of mouth. Great way to sell extras, without stress, cause if it didn't sell, just more for us. My customer total is 20. I worried if I turned something I loved into a business, I would end up hating it.

I went through the same process, and am glad to be working a 4 days/week normal job and growing food for ourselves the other days, compared to trying to be a "real" farmer oftentimes making $0 in 6 hours on a Saturday... Maybe there's a world where more people grow for themselves and their neighbours again but also do other things? All the best Kim

So there goes my favorite channel but I’ve had some of the same issues, the farmers market where I’m not comfortable trying to be a salesman. I’ve decided to eat what grows that particular month, give away to my neighbors and complete the hermit lifestyle. Thanks,I’ve learned a great deal from this channel and it’s such a nice place to visit. Dern it.

Pretty much how we feel here too. We dont like selling our things it just feels strange. although making a living by just existing in our lives wins. I look at it like- maybe some of these people who buy our food may accidentally rebuild their microbiomes and become healthy and snap out of the matrix. IN the end, my goal is that every minute possible I can give to my family, particularly our kids.
