Great Video, I have been taking cello lessons from a college professor, but in 11 months he has not explained what the notes are and how to read the pulses. You did that he could not explained in 11 months. Thanks a ton, for the great lessons. I am your humble servant.

I’m currently having cello lessons but not ‘lessons’ cause our conductor just gives the whole orchestra a piece and gets mad when we I can’t play it right. He says “you don’t know how to read notes? Your old already!!”. I really want to learn but no one can teach me. Thank you for your vid, it really helps 💕

You're not old! (and you're welcome) School conductors become autocrats sometimes. I had a student who loved cello but had ADHD. He was also very kind and never pushed people to get to his chair come beginner of rehearsal. He was habitually late because he had only 10 minutes to jump out if his gym clothes, run across the school in 10 minutes and be in his chair ready and tuned with cello. Safe to say he was never on time and the conductor suffered him every day. To add insult to injury, the "conductor" has no prior string instrument experience or symphonic conducting appreciation. His bowings and fingerings were always bizarre and illogical, so when I found out he was a computer programmer, not a music educator by degree, it all made sense. Just hang in there and ask me for any clarity on your parts.

Thank you so much for the detailed videos on how to read sheet music. I am a mom to a five-year-old on the Suzuki method, so I have to learn the cello with my daughter. Of course, we use the aural method, but without a musical background, I am grasping at invisible strings! Again, a shout out from Canada; you've gained a new cello student (plus my daughter by proxy). :)

@@CelloCoach I am having difficulty switching from the inner strings to the outermost without adjusting my hold a bit. I'm not sure if that is a common issue for beginners or if I might be doing something wrong. If you have any tips or maybe a video I could watch to help at all that would be wonderful. Thank you.
@CelloCoach5 жыл бұрын
So, the bow hold is needing adjustment when on the C and A strings? Sound like you may need more flexibility in your wrist
@brittanyhighfield58815 жыл бұрын
That is most likely the solution. I am still very much in the beginning stages of trying to learn.

helpful video indeed. but "D" major's 2 sharps position isn't clear. where should I press on the string to get "D" major's sharps?
@CelloCoach5 жыл бұрын
In 1st position the 3rd finger plays the F# on the D (2nd) string. The 3 plays a C# on the 1st string (A string) in the same position.
@ayatalwaqedi13364 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonathan, I'm confused why did you play the C sharp on the G string at 5:52, shouldn't be on the A string!! . and thank you for your videos they are very helpful.
@CelloCoach4 жыл бұрын
Because the C# (as displayed in the key signature) occurs on that exact note. Yes, there are other C#s found throughout the 4 octaves our cellos can play, so to be clear, I play exactly what is written : F# on the 2nd string and C# on the 3rd string

But what about the lowest string -the c string. Why don't you refer to that one also? Isn't that c string the lowest string on the cello? I'm thinking of starting cello lessons but first I'm trying to learn the notes.
@tutu84825 жыл бұрын
i wonder why music is not written in pure number? Then it is super easy to read?
@imnotaswishgodokmaybeiam-s32126 жыл бұрын
You are missing the C string you know
@CelloCoach6 жыл бұрын
Good observation, Anastasia! Yes, you are correct. Though after teaching the open strings to novice cellists for many years, I decided to introduce the low C later. Not only is our thickest string the most physically challenging to play, it is also not as easy for the brain read the low stave notes as opposed to the notes above the stave. With that said, you still learn all pertinent info for the first measure of the Prelude in this series. :-)
@imnotaswishgodokmaybeiam-s32126 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Humphries thank you. I actually know someone in my grade that plays the cello and I just wanted to make the remark because she has played the C string in class
