In this video, I tackled all the difficulties in order to finally make Keystep real-time recording possible. Key knowledge:
1. Quickly remove all sequence
2. Secret "build-in" metronome reveal.
3. Quickly set up a blank sequence with any length
0:00 Intro
1:00 firmware and setup
2:11 hardware setup
3:10 step recording
4:26 quickly remove sequence
7:19 real-time recording
7:50 "build-in" metronome
11:21 quickly create 32 steps
13:19 conclusion

For more improvising, you can change the MIDI channel to control a different synth and "solo" on that channel while the sequencer continues the original channel and rhythm. great tips and "hacks". thanks!

I have a korg M3R and you can use combis to play drums on MIDI channel one and switch the keystep to keyboard play (shift OCT+) and choose MIDI CH 2-16 and play any instrument in the combi while the sequencer plays the drum part. good stuff for a little $100 controller.

Wow, again and again I'm impressed to learn about new 'hidden' features inside the Keystep 37. Actually never used real-time recording inside the Keystep. Partly due to the limitations you mention and solve here, partly because it was simply not self-explanatory and I was too lazy to look it up in the manual... Once you get it, it's super simple and convenient. Otherwise you don't even notice there is such a feature inside the Keystep :D

My sync out was playing clicks every 1/16 per beat which is almost impossible to record to. In case anyone else has this issue you can open MIDI Control Center and change "Sync Clock IN/OUT Settings" From 1 step (Clock) to 1 pulse (korg) and it switches it to 1/8 clicks like in the video. Be careful using the sync out directly into a speaker or amp. Sync voltage is generally 5 volts, audio amplifiers are usually expecting a maximum peak-to-peak signal of 2 volts. You could damage your speakers or amplifier like this. You could easily reduce the voltage to safe levels with a simple voltage divider or a few diodes in series if you have the possibility to solder a couple of components together. At any rate, I wouldn't recommend playing the sync signal on your favorite bluetooth speaker or a hi-fi system; earbud headphones will probably be damaged immediately.

That was a very helpful video and thank you. Good thinking re the snc out to a device for metronome. When I read the user manual and discovered we have to press a number of keys together to ERASE...the keys bear no resemblence to erasure. With a bit if forthought Arturia could have done this by hitting the SHIFT button and then the ERASE button! It should not have been that difficult to have designed the thing ti be user friendly. Shift is normally the one to hit first before anything is erased. Of course this is not your fault. Excellent work and thank you.

New to all this, but I have the keystep 37 and volca kick, bass and keys: so I can connect all those to my 37 with the help of a midi solutions quadra thru, set up the midi channels and I am good to go? How about though, setting up a sequence from the bass thru the 37 but also a sequence on the bass itself, switch midi channel to the kick and play notes from it on the 37 at the dame time. Can that be done? Thanks.

Hi - So I've got everything syncing perfectly, the transport starts all the gear....BUT....I have one issue that I can't find a solution for - When I press PAUSE or STOP on the Keystep, ALL the clocks in the synths go back to their internal clocks instead of being controlled by the Keystep. When I press PLAY again, the clocks go back to syncing to the Keystep. So put simply, the Keystep is only sending clock when the PLAY button is pushed. Is there a way to avoid that?
@truedanbo
@truedanbo 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe you can check the midi control center software for options like Transport settings : Play/pause. If that doesn't work, check whether your synth setting has sync option to switch to MIDI/sync instead of internal clock?
@GrootsieTheDog
@GrootsieTheDog 4 жыл бұрын
@@truedanbo Thanks for the reply. Ya, its not the synth issue because that is already switched to the external clock source. Its the Keystep that stops sending clock when stop or pause is pressed. When doing live recording, how do you make sure the sequence starts at the beginning when you recall it later? When I recall the sequence it always starts toward the end. I tried starting as soon as I hit record/play, and I’ve tried waiting for the sequence to cycle once before I start playing - but it always starts in the middle when I hit restart, never on the first note I played. I know I’m putting the correct number of steps because it loops exactly right. You have this issue ever?

octavr did you check the dip switches on the back? This solved the problem for me. It comes factory set to internal, switch them to MIDI. Great discovery! Did you use a mono or an stereo cable to connect the sync to the bluetooth speaker?

Hi Stephan, I think I used stereo cable. But I guess mono would work the same way.

@@cepriuy1559 Hi Cepriu, it makes sense in that the sync signal is mono even you plug a stereo cable. But for indicate tempo purpose, it still does the job even you only hear it one ear :)
