Thanks for the video. This will be my first rebuild. Wish me luck.

@@RetroRebuilds Thank you. I did my first one today. To my surprise there was no black magic stuff going on. Thanks again.

Another excellent one, I was wondering how to get that big spring bolt out on a steel GT. Slight critique: I feel like polishing it should have been done while it was disassembled, to avoid getting any tiny particles of grit or polishing paste in places it might be bad. Thank you for pointing out that parts have to be clean before evaporusting them as well, it's always important to point that out. For the pulley seals, do they need any lubrication in that groove?

I’m glad you found it useful!! And on the polishing: Most of the derailleurs I’ve done I polished BEFORE I put them together. The problem with that is when you go to put the springs in, you’re wearing gloves and get grease all over the surface you just polished. Then you have to clean it off and re-polish it again. I also like to Polish with the pulley cage on the derailleur because it gives me something to grab onto while not screwing up the polish on the body. I don’t recommend putting grease in the groove because the seals are supposed to keep dirt away from the bushings but when you put grease there it will attract dirt very easily. (I’ve done that before)

@@RetroRebuilds Isn't the polish an abrasive you're supposed to wash off after?
@RetroRebuilds3 жыл бұрын
Yes you rub it off with a rag or a paper towel but a small film stays on the surface

Something you may have overlooked: if you tighten the screws going through the wheels, it will lock them…. Not sure how to resolve that problem.

The parallelogram is made of stainless steel, I believe? SS is not magnetic
@squireblack593 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of unscrewing the whole parallelogram from the cage, rather than grabbing the bare bolt with vise grips after the parallelogram has been removed. However, if the bolt is tight and crusted into the cage (and aren't they always?), won't that put an undesirable reverse tension on the spring? And if the spring breaks, it's really hard to source a replacement.

If you’re bolts stuck just use some wd40 or penetrate to loosen it up. I’ve never had a spring break on me, I’m pretty sure they’re designed to handle a little over what the derailleur cage can move.

@@RetroRebuilds especially the rotation until the parts are relaxed, I do not know how to describe it. Good to know for the case of disassembly instead of taking everything apart with try and error. Viele Grüße
