@@gracejardine6607 It's good to hear your appreciation. I'm used to hearing from people that I'm sinning because I'm worried about getting something wrong. He has been so patient and he's never said that I'm legalistic or that I think too much when I have five billion questions. I am so thankful that the Lord has given me strength, to keep going, even though I want to give up. I have two beautiful boys both are autistic. My husband passed away years ago. I’m all alone. I lost my job over declining the vaccine. LIKE MANY OTHERS! I declined due to my pre existing health conditions lupus and heart disease. I’ve been struggling to provide for myself and my children since losing my job from Forsyth hospital. I’m now waitressing, and I’m thankful, but I’m not making nearly enough to get by. Groceries are super expensive. Every month is a battle to not end up on the streets with my two children. I’m constantly in fear of losing my home. To even think about being on the streets with two young children is terrifying. But even as I face homelessness seemingly every month. I have faith, God will provide! With GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE! Faith over fear.

Great job! If I may add one more point to an already great video: People need to also be taught to be restful and “childlike.” As an intimate encounter with the Lord Jesus, we are invited to receive with simple, humble, childlike faith. Thus, after we respond with our “Amen,” we are to consciously rest as we gently tilt back our head, open our mouth, and stick out our tongue, allowing the minister to do all the work of placing the Body of Christ on our tongue. In this way too, we grow in a sense of receptivity and trust, allowing the moment to be a true gift from God.

A little while ago a priest told us right before communion to let the priest do the work, just open your mouth. It’s kind of like a golf swing, you need the follow-through. He said, don’t move your head. So you just hold very still until it is fully placed. I think he MIGHT have said to us because at another church in the city a priest placed it on my tongue and it fell out! I think it was the second time! I said I would still have it but he gave me another one. I told him he could just give it to me on the hand. After mass he beckoned me over and looking so beautiful he said I could continue to receive it on the tongue, basically to not be afraid to. Cause I had been weeping ever since and I think he wanted reassure me. Btw I love this description of the Eucharist. He gets it. I love that he gets it and I wish the whole world would get it

When I was a kid growing up in the bay area I would stand and the priest would put it in my mouth. When we moved to Sacramento, I would stand and the priest would put it in my hand and I would sit back down then eat it. Now I'm 48 living in Modesto and it seems the people at the new church I attend bow at the altar, say Amen, receive it in the hands and eat it on the spot. So, I just followed what they did the last three times I went to mass. But today I did the same but put the wafer in my mouth after turning away to return to my seat and a lady at the altar ran up to me in a panic and asked if I put it in my mouth. She saw me munching then ran back over to the priest. I don't know, I just thought that was weird. Unless I did something really wrong, but it seems to be different in certain areas? Or different churches?

@@serpentsepia6638 The Real Presence, Holy Communion, is used in satanic rituals. And the easiest way to get it is to pose as a communicant, but not consume it. Most likely the cause for the 'alter lady's' concern that you had not consumed it. This is why every church should return to only distributing Holy Communion on the tongue, preferably while kneeling. Only consecrated hands should touch the Body of Christ, He is really present in that host: Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. When Jesus resurrected He told Mary Magdalene not to touch Him, however He told Thomas to touch his side, Thomas was consecrated as a priest during the Last Supper, so he could touch His body, the same is for all priests. He gave up His Body in the Holy Cross to give us salvation and we are given this sacred gift of love from Our Lord, to be part of His body, so we have to receive Him with the most reverence and grateful hearts as the King of Kings deserves.
@oldmothergooseV2.02 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. Jesus told Mary Magdalene to not “hold on” to Him, not to not touch Him. Jesus touched lepers and the sick of all kinds and the dead and horrible sinners; He broke all sorts of taboos and religious rules by touching people; of course He’s okay with us touching Him. Besides, there’s nothing that makes the tongue more holy than the hands and nobody’s tongue is consecrated.

Great teaching Father! I started taking Holy Communion only kneeling and on the tongue and at first it was awkward because like you said, we’re not really taught how to do it that way. And so I thought well, it’ll get better, I’ll get used to it and get better at it and it will feel less awkward. But it didn’t get less awkward and what I realized is that that is okay! So many things about being a follower of Jesus Christ and staying true to His mission and what He wills for us involves a LOT of awkwardness. So this one thing - as insignificant as it may seem to others becomes so huge because it is the literal body, blood, soul and divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ and awkward or not, I’ll receive Him the most reverent way possible. He is worth it. 💕

I made my First Communion in the 1960s and have always received on the tongue (tried several times by hand but felt uncomfortable). Receiving this way is very natural except when I startle a Eucharistic Minister who has been distributing in the hand - and they notice my hands are not out - and I can tell they don't particularly like distributing on the tongue and I feel their anxiety. They need lessons too (LOL) since while I extend my tongue in an easy access way, they sometimes don't do a good job. I also look down with a EM because sometimes they hold up the Host for me to look at, but I have no desire to catch their eye which would happen. Some may be trained that way but I don't care for it, so lowered eyes. Receiving our Savior is the most important thing we do so it's important to feel comfortable about it so I pray many here eventually get there.

I also am a bit anxious when receiving communion by the tongue from a EM. This past week, the EM held up 2 hosts because my husband and I always stand side-by-side while receiving. I had to touch my chin to show her I receive by mouth and then she preceded to place 1 of the hosts (awkwardly) on my tongue while still holding the other in the same hand. We attend a morning mass at another church when our parish does not have mass that day, and the priest told us (beforehand) that he does not look directly at us while we are receiving, and the reason is because (he said)" it is between you and Jesus. I keep myself out of it". I liked that explanation.

I love taking the Eucharist on the tongue because then I don't contaminate Him with my hands. With Covid, losing the ability to do that really stunk (and when there was that brief period with the initial vaccines, I happily received on the tongue and took the cup for my wedding ceremony during that time). That being said, I think that a person shouldn't take on the tongue if they are sick (the same way that it is not a good idea to take the cup if you are sick).

Besides not being consecrated, people's hands are not clean: we open the church doors, touch the pews and missals, and shake hand with others, and then touch Jesus?
@Lucylou70702 жыл бұрын
This explanation by Father was helpful, but your comment isn't although you meant it to be. Maybe your hands aren't clean, but don't you know that so many people disinfect their hands while seated in the pews before receiving the Eucharist? We also continue to use antiseptic when we enter the church/Mass anyway. Do you really believe our mouths are cleaner than our hands-unless of course maybe you brush your teeth and gargle before attending Mass? Does our Lord believe one is holier than the other when he created us, and he doesn't create junk? How about we all just enter into the mystery of the Mass and the Eucharist and treasure the love our Lord has for us?

And actually it didn't apply to me 9 months ago. You are a blessing and God bless you and all the Fransiscans.

Hundreds of Catholics in our parish desire to receive Holy Communion in our tongues. BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT ALL OF THE PRIESTS IN OUR PARISH REFUSE TO PLACE THE HOLY HOST ON OUR TONGUES DUE TO COVID19 VIRUS. I LIVE HERE IN CEBU ISLAND, PHILIPPINES. PLEASE HELP US AND COMMUNICATE TO ALL OF OUR FILIPINO BISHOPS TO GO BACK TO THE OPTION OF GIVING HOLY COMMUNION ON THE TONGUES.

Praying for ALL our brothers & sisters in Christ in the Philippines that the Shepherds assigned to your parish DO NOT DENY you receiving our LORD in the most reverent & respectful way. Pray for your priest to be obedient, faithful & courageous in knowing that the Eucharist is TRULY GOD that they should NOT FEAR that receiving GOD will cause sickness to those who faithfully want to receive GOD.

The priests are correct in not putting germs into your mouths! Your superstitious minds are filled with extreme sacramentalism! Instead of following the dark ages superstitions, why don't you learn what it means to be a Christian?

It's weird in UK, perhaps it's another church style with the Anglican or it's me, they have it in their hands, I've never seen this before? It's a blessing to close ones eyes and have that communion, connection with the father as it touches with the tongue. It reminds me of when I was a girl and loved being good to the lord. Now, that I'm more of an adult, wish to live near the cathedral of St Paul to just reunite and not think about it, even do I'm the only one whom brings reverence in the gate or entrance while everyone is passing by and still, I do miss the everyone feeling the same sense. That beauty, it gives me such an energy, this gesture are innate as we're to one another. Thank you, it's so nice listening to the details from the other side.

Thank you Father for this video on how to receive communion in the tongue. I always feel like I'm struggling when I take communion in the tongue. One time the host actually fell down to the ground from my tongue. Ever since that moment I've been very nervous taking communion in the town, but I do it anyway. Again, thanks for this video. This really helps.

Definitely appreciate this video as someone who needed content just like this when entering the Church. It is such an unusual activity to participate in, especially for someone coming from a totally non-Catholic background, that one can feel really self-conscious about it. Like, I still struggle to reconcile this posture as the most 'reverent' (not disputing anyone about it though), purely because my only cultural parallel is being a little kid sticking my tongue out at someone to say "Nyah nyah!" I just didn't grow up around people bedridden and needing to be fed, for example, so the act of one person feeding another, and how to go about that... Anyhow, thanks for your humility in modelling for the camera. I appreciate that you entering into the self-consciousness of so many of us!

Thank you Fr. Mark Mary. Your demonstration and explanation has been so helpful. I received the Holy Eucharist on the tongue last Sunday after watching your video. It had been many years since I have received the Holy Eucharist on the tongue and I was very nervous. Your video gave me the confidence I needed! God bless you!

I am a cradle Catholic and before Covid always received Our Lord on the tongue. I am also a baby boomer who was formed around only receiving it in the tongue. Never thought the recent generation would be so removed on the practice. Anything in reception that has fewer mechanics is much more reverent. This Is MY Body, and Our Lord in persona Christie places it on my tongue is remarkable

Fantastic suggestions! I particularly like the suggestion to tilt your head back a little. As a Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion, having the recipient tilt their head back a little makes it much easier to deliver the Eucharist. As someone that prefers to receive via the tongue, I'll make sure to remember to tilt my own head back. Thank you very much for sharing!

Thank you so much for sharing this Fr. Mark-Mary! I’m one of those people who, going through RCIA about 10 or so years ago, was not only taught *not* how to receive on the tongue but rather that I *should not* receive on the tongue. My spiritual life has grown since then and I’ve recently started to want this more but, like you said, have felt awkward about it to the point where I’m distracted during the homily almost out of fear that Communion will be coming. Like many parishes, ours does not have altar rails so I’ve been afraid of dropping our Lord on the ground or making our priests feel awkward by my lack of knowledge. I feel this will help me so much. Thanks again, God bless! Edit: Since you explicitly mention kneeling to receive on the tongue without an altar rail, is this something that you only recommend at your home parish with the priests you know? Because during the week I’ll try to go to whatever daily Mass is offered (usually not my home parish) and in the past I’ve felt like the only one who wants to receive on the tongue while kneeling. But I don’t want to come off as if I’m trying to be “holier than thou”, throw the priest off, or disrupt the Communion line. But I do want to pay reverence. Any thoughts for a situation like that? Is it better to just receive while standing in that circumstance?
@laurak7512 жыл бұрын
I’ve been in your exact same situation. At my home parish I always receive kneeling and on the tongue, but when traveling there have been many times where I am the only one that does both. The only thing you need to worry about is your purity of intention. If your intent is to show Our Eucharistic Lord the reverence He is due, then you absolutely should do it. Whatever other people may think is between them and God. I would wager that just about every priest knows your intention when you kneel and stick out your tongue, and so I wouldn’t worry about throwing them off! Some people kneel and receive on the hand. Some people stand and receive on the tongue. Priests are used to a variety of types of reception! As for disrupting the line for Holy Communion, I promise you that it is never a disruption. For anyone who percieves it to be so, it is, again, a matter between them and God. I am sure Our Lord appreciates the extra couple seconds it takes to show Him love and respect. But if you are still worried, my general rule of thumb is to quietly exit my pew and wait to be the last one to recieve in small churches where I don’t know how things are done. In larger churches you can generally look around and observe better, and the first thing I look for is if anyone is recieving on the tongue. If so, I just go with the normal rhythm of things. If not, I will wait to be one of the last. But again, that is just my personal “code of conduct”. Hope this helps! Pax Christi!

Priests need to be mindful too! I have had many awkward communion moments because the priest was just rushing or not paying attention. When receiving on the tongue it needs to be slow, deliberate and reverent for priest and receiver - every time!

Thanks so much. I am a revert and I have been receiving in the hand for so many years. But lately I have tried to receive on the tongue after reading "The Holy Bread of Eternal Life: Restoring Eucharistic Reverence in an age of Impiety" by Peter Kwasniewski. Sometimes I am refused to receive on the tongue and some Eucharistic ministers aren't used to it so they shake and have a hard time giving the host on the tongue. I will try to stick out my tongue so they have an easier time giving on the tongue. Wish me luck

This was great!! Although I don't think we have that option yet in our diocese - I did practice along with you. Brought back so many memories growing up in the 50s and 60s. I know Jesus gave the host to some saints in the hand as well as the original apostles - so I don't think it matters the way you receive it as it does how the individual receives it. Receiving it on the tongue irreverently or casually is certainly not as good as receiving it by the hand with love and respect.
@markushill86392 жыл бұрын
You do have the option to receive on the tongue. It is unlawful to not permit reception on the tongue, whereas it IS lawful to abrogate reception in the hands.

Today I dropped the Eucharist from my tongue - I was receiving while standing. I tried to kneel and take the host with the tongue alone, licking the church floor didn’t work, so I quickly took it with my hands and consumed it, on the brink of tears. I was first in line, so I was humiliated in front of my entire parish. But this experience shew to myself how important I feel communion to be. Thanks to your brilliant video, I hope this horrible experience will never happen again.

It happened to me too, at school once in front of all my students and colleagues. Even after doing it hundreds of times. I started partially because as EMHC I have seen much more dropped hosts in the hand! I still receive in the hand from some EMHCs that I know sre uncomfortable, similarly the palm has to be flat and still. I feel awful about it too but accidents do happen. It really shoes as Fr stated in the video of Jesus' love and humility-- and perhaps God used the embarassing moment to increase mine.
