Is this color warm or cool? To be able to find colors that flatter our skin undertones, we need to recognize the temperature of colors. This video demonstrates how to do that with several tricks- not only for the 6 basic colors but also for "more complicated" colors (hues). It is a first video in a new series, dedicated to color, on this channel.
Subscribe to also get the next episodes, and by the end of this video series, your capsule wardrobe will look fabulous ;-)

I’m curious, what colors can you see? When you shop do you just pick whatever and go with it? Also have you ever felt your colorblindness hinders your life at all? I don’t think I’ve ever met a person with colorblindness before so I never got to ask them anything so excuse me if I seem nosy or rude, I don’t mean to be!

Hi Justine! It was so cool that you mentioned how in the Vietnamese language we use the same word for blue and green. Can confirm!!! We use the word xanh for both, but to differentiate for green, we say màu xanh lá cây which describes the color of leaves, màu xanh dương which describes the color of the sky. 😁

This is what I was taught as a child, until I learned in watercolour painting that your primary colours can be all warm or all cool (so cool yellow, cool blue, cool red, and warm yellow, warm blue, warm red) to create an entire warm or cool palette. So purples with a lot or blue can still be warm, or there can be cool orange. The key is never mix cool and warm primary together or you get ‘muddy’ colours.
@estellefollet7861
@estellefollet7861 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I was looking for that comment! I also paint quit often in watercolor, and I don't know if it's specific to painting, but you can definitely have "warm" blue. The thing is, you can never have the perfect primary color, so it's best to have a warm and a cold set to work on all your mix without them getting muddy.
@Hanna-nw8mn
@Hanna-nw8mn 2 жыл бұрын
Merriam Style talks about it clearly - a "cool yellow" is still a yellow which - by definition - is still much warmer that a "warm blue". You know that when you add enough blue to a yellow pigment, you get a perfectly neutral green. As long, as it is still yellow, it is warm, just a bit cooler that purely warm.
@wolfferoni
@wolfferoni 2 жыл бұрын
@@Hanna-nw8mn I mean, sure? But if someone is cool toned, they should have access to the whole colour wheel and they can do that by wearing a cool yellow. With this generalisation of cool and warm colours, I'm sure there are many people who think they should avoid half of the wheel because it doesn't suit them. There's a fashion designer on youtube called Zoe Hong that has a series on colour theory that I recommend

Merci, Justine! I'm sure I'm not the only one to be thrilled when you introduced this video as the first in a series. This is a clear & succinct explanation of cool vs warm colors & how to assess color temperature. The swatches are an effective illustration of your points, with the added bonus of being a great opportunity to admire your beautiful rings. It's difficult to judge color temp in stores & online, but stores will usually let you take a garment into natural light, making it easier to see the true color. Online shoppers are pretty much at the mercy of the descriptions & photos. This video will help a lot, even with online shopping: it's tricky, but possible, to compare a garment's color to that of another garment that's obviously warm or cool in the same online shop. Thank you for showing us how comparing warm & cool versions of the same hue helps determine the temperature of a given color.

Way back in the eighties a book titled “Color Me Beautiful” was published which introduced me to the warm/cool concept. I’ve adhered to cool jewel tones(according to the book, I’m a Cool Winter) and have never felt out of sync with my color choices.

I still my plastic folder with the tiny fabric swatches in it, from The Color Collection, one of the color draping services. Despite what I was told, I will never wear any beige or taupe or ivory (white is way better) and I can wear chartreuse (every ten years or so). It took me decades to accept that my favorite color, turquoise, doesn’t flatter me, so it is now restricted to pottery and other home decor.

6:10 When I look at this swatch and the tints and shades of it, I'd say it is a warm blue. In art school we were trained in colour theory, including colour temperatures. This would have been given as an example of a warm blue (as it cerulean-like), while something like cobalt or phthalo blue are cool blues.

I often ask in the store if I can take an item into an open doorway, to get a better idea of the true color. This lighting problem varies from store to store, some of the newer stores have really warm, yellowish LED lighting that distorts all colors. I once bought what I thought was a pale green sweater, but when I got it home it was definitely gray and the “cool-pink” top turned out to be a hideous peach. The worst distortion is in online photos, they use filters and special lighting to make colors look brighter and lighter than they really are. I just bought a “purple” skirt that turned out to be black in natural light, it’s so annoying (Sundance, Garnet Hill and Mango, in these cases).

I love this!! Where I'm from, it's not unusual for mothers to take their teenage daughters to "have their colors done". It was so helpful for me as a young lady b/c it equipt me to be able to make better choices when I was unsure if a cut or style was suitable. I am cool toned and a "Contrast, slightly muted". That means clear colors have a little bit of grey in them and those that are separated by more than one hue or across the color cool color chart work best on me. I love the philosophy that I can wear any color, I just need the right hues. To this day, I carry my color chart in my purse and use it to select everything from hair color to decor.

A great intro for everyone to understand a bit more in a more accessible way. 👏😁 I grew up with a lot of people that worked in the home renovation industry (including painters) and I had it drummed into me pretty early on. They hated it if I didn't use the terminology that they used, and basically told me off if I tried to use them interchangeably: *• Hues* - Pure colours *• Tints* - Hues + white (so I guess you can say all pastels are tints) *• Tones* - Hues + grey *• Shades* - Hues + black. Echo Gillette also has an educational and rather funny video from 2019 about colour theory. 😆

I had seen already your one vid about this 2 years ago I guess. And it really is true. I am warm so I know now what colour to buy when it comes to clothing. Thanks Justine. From Philippines 💕

Yay! This is exactly what I need, thank you! Cool toned hues always grab my attention so much more than warm ones but alas I have a warm undertone and don't look good in most of the colours I actually like. :-(

is it a matter of color "intensity"?

@@justineleconte do you mean like vibrancy? As I have been told I suit pastel colours but I really don’t like them.

Contrast can be important. I look better with softer muted warm hues than 'clear, solid, contrasting' ones (even if they are warm!).

I usually have this problem with the so-called jewel tones. Warm burgundy looks good on me and I can pull off even cooler ones. Even “jewel” purple - I found a colour that suits me. But teal - that beautiful dark greenish blue colour - I have still to find the perfect one to complement my colouring.

@@katka2782 I love your mention of Kibbe types here! I think it is important to take into account what shapes/overall look fits you as well. I am a classic too (leaning towards dramatic) so I figured monochrome looks do work better on me. You can match the fit that suits you (for example, a good tailored suit and jacket) in an overall colour that might not be the first thing recommended, say a deep burgundy, and still look fresh and not let the shade wear you.

Justine, this was AMAZING! So helpful! 👏👏👏 Also, I have to say that those blueish-green tones that you have shown are exactly my favourite colours in the world! Combined with whites, blacks and greys those colours make about 70-80% of my wardrobe and I am always magically drawn to them whenever I see them. 🥰 So excited for the next videos in the series! 💙

Yes! Thank you for a clear explanation. Can’t wait for the next lesson. Q: I’m “warm,” but can’t carry red as much as when I was younger. Burgundy and eggplant look best on me, as well as, yellowish greens. Most people describe me as an Autumn.
