i'm only gonna add to what everyone is saying but i'm impressed by how good these videos are. the production value yes, but the information as well. the fact that it doesn't simply tell you how to do it, but what does, and why it works this way. obviously it's not thorough in so little time, but it gives all the info to be able to experiment on your own with a good understanding of what you're doing.

Thanks for this. Some great tips. I am just getting a mic and was thinking about trying to record with mic and a line in from the pickup. How would this tend to affect your mic positioning choice?
@craigmartin2460
@craigmartin2460 7 жыл бұрын
Hi I really like your videos, fantastic way of explaining. In the first video you say that the mic should be around 12 inches away, but here you say that going closer eliminates room noise...my room has a ton of echo and I've found (thanks to you) that closer to the guitar is warmer and less echo. Other people such as Recording Revolution, say that you should be a foot away too..
@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Craig! As you said: If you move the mic closer to the guitar, you get a warmer sound and less ambience. So if you want to reduce the influence of your room, try to get closer. If the sound gets too boomy, some low cut or low shelf EQ might help. Trust your ears.

Loved it! really helpful and clear to understand. I know the main title of the tutorial is about how to record an acoustic guitar with only one mic, but, there are big differences in sound if you use for example 2 different positions? What I mean is, what you get by mixing mics in different positions is just an addition of the characteristics of both, or you can create a new different sensation when you hear it? Sorry if the question is not as clear as it can (I don't really know how to explain it better), but anyway, thank you so muh for the videos, great job ^^

Hi Enrique, The positions we suggest here are for recording with one mic. We want to show how you can emphasize one or the other part of the instrument’s character by just varying the mic position. You can indeed use combinations of more than one mic, we will handle this in upcoming videos. Feel free to experiment, the worst that could happen are comb filter effects caused by different distances between mics and sound source. You will recognize this by unwanted sound coloration.

I have a problem: When I play, my right arm moves on the guitar body. That movement creates annoying "hiss" sound. How can I reduce it? Lifting my arm is not an answer, because its impossible to play guitar without touching it. I've tried many mic positions, but nothing seems to help.
@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Antton, Try the positions with the biggest distance to you right arm. Try to angle the mic away from your right arm, use the maximum rejection of the mic (180° at cardioid polar pattern). And try to get rid of the sound source itself. Find out, what is generating the noise. Try different clothing etc. Hope this helps you. Have fun and keep recording!

Hey There: I came across some of your videos on KZbin. I am starting to record my acoustic guitar for KZbin videos etc. At this moment, I do not have any type of audio interface, so although I do not have a Neumann microphone, I already have a blue yeti thx. My problem is that when I record directly into audacity, my guitar is sounding wobbly.., weakly fading back and forth into the sound. I have followed the instructions by Geert Verdickt on several of his videos, including "how to record acoustic guitar with only one mic"and it still exists. Can you make any recommendations with what I currently have? Again: * Acoustic guitar * Blue yeti mic (with, stand tried at 12th fret, and also slightly above by the top of the guitar * Audacity on a Windows 11 laptop. Thanks!

Thankyou for the very informative videos. Now , all I have to do is to decide on a neumann microphone solution. These microphones sound good in your hands, with correct mic placement. Hi, A pair of 184s is a good option, indeed. But there are many others, depending on the desired sound character. what mic stand are you using in this video?
@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 7 ай бұрын
These were normal, commercially available microphone stands that belonged to the studio, probably from K&M. These are available in different heights. We recommend stands that are as heavy as possible to ensure stability even when the microphone boom is extended. In contrast to the stands shown in the video, we particularly recommend heavy plate stands for studio work. These have a particularly low center of gravity, which makes them very stable, and they pose less of a trip hazard than tripods.✌️

All mics presented in our videos have been recorded with the same high-quality preamp / AD-converter combination, known for its clear and neutral sound character. And to let you hear the sound of the mics only, no post processing is applied.

sounds dull, boomy and weak. Tutorial and placements are ok, next time change the player, guitar, and last but not least, the microphones to AKGs
