I'm recording a Marshall 1974X Handwired 18W Combo using the same method as I use for Acoustic Guitar recording, which includes tilting the combo and lifting it up from the floor. The gives me an intense clearly defined stereo image of the amp. I'm using a 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom.

I love your 1974x series, keep them coming. I hope you shoot a video on the clean-ish tones of the amp and not just dirty ones! Cheers.

Wow, that sounded stellar! The 1974X with that '73 LP is some combo!

Sick tones! I love these types of recording techniques, Lambchopper did a video about some Judas Priest tones similar to this. If you're concerned about the stereo image being lopsided, it may be helpful to keep the mics the exact same distance from the speaker; it's a similar concept to the Glyn Johns technique for drum overheads. Even still, great content and great tones!

Wow that last position sounded really wide even on phone speakers! Some might say it is a flawed sound, but on a track with multiple guitar parts it would surely fit right in without processing.

I use my phone close enough that the camera can't pickup more than my hands.. works great with omni polar electret. using my interface i have two omni "industry standard" meant for interviews.. omni with a massive range works great the mono mic was best in the second version for imaging. 5:40 was my favourite but super wide with the hole.. mix the mono mic slightly phase shifted ahead you want to get the package where you calculate transfer function and phase then overlay those.. check Michael Curtis channel out about system tuning and the program he uses to phase shift things.

Great video. Have you ever considered taking Tonex profiles of the Micd sounds you get? People would be willing to pay for these I reckon, id love to get access to recorded sounds you get in your videos

with first and second test try angling the speaker directly in between the two mics as when listening on headphones you hear the stereo separation but one side is brighter than the other. Also try the M/S technique to see how that sounds :)

Kinda like the Glyn Johns drum technique on a guitar amp. Adds mid warmth, but still focused.

Hello Johan! Thanks for another video! I'd like to ask you what is the most common mic method that we can hear at the classic rock albums from early 70s like Sabbath (Paranoid era) or Deep Purple (In Rock, Fireball)? I always have a problem to find a guitar track in whole song mix. It is possible to use close mic on the left and room mic in the centre? Did the rock giants doubletrack guitar parts to get more power? When you use 8th track recorder for example there can be a problem to overdub tracks. Let me know what you think. Cheers!

Both mics definitely added some dimension. What if you double tracked it, and swapped channels on the 2nd track??

I don’t think I fully grasp the stereo concept like I thought I did. Johan, maybe you or someone else could help me understand. Can you achieve a true stereo image with two mics arranged vertically, one on top of the other? I thought capturing a true stereo image of a source is when you have the two mics positioned left and right. Sure, you can pan any two mics left and right no matter where the mics are placed, but I didn’t think that was stereo. Wouldn’t having the mics positioned vertically just be a dual mono recording? I’d appreciate any insight on this. Either way, really cool video as usual Johan! Thank you!

The sound coming out of a speaker radiates in a conical shape, you can think of it like a spotlight. Therefore the difference between the two microphones would be more a difference between centrally-aligned and slightly offset to the tip of the "cone" of sound coming out of the amp. Left/right or top/bottom makes no difference in this regard since the alignment is the same in either case. Hope this makes sense.

Sorry johan, on my phone, which is collapsed to mono, the single mic sounds way better. Might sound cool in stereo but you have to check summed to mono.

SOunds like there might be a bit of a phase issue here, there is something happening where the right mic is cancelling a little. Try a vertical XY style thing, it's usually super cool.
@JohanSegeborn

Yeah only the first two positions have acceptable amounts of phase cancellation

I have not flown more than five at a time yet but the full squadron here is thirteen discrete amps. As if I was going to record them, I have a half dozen or so Little Labs IBP tools and various phase flipping isolators, and I would definitely like to precisely match the distances between transducers. Null check every one of the mics and find out how much you are losing to the comb filtering.

Steve Albeni (R.I.P) has a video on his channel about phase cancelation when recording the same signal from different sources. I didn't watch it myself cuz it looked pretty involved but you might find it interesting
