What is the ‘essential’ purpose of removing the old toner powder from the cartridge?

Well I definitely enjoyed the video. It helped tremendously. However, on the 830XL, you don't have to remove the gear. Just the end cap.

I have a Brother HL-L2400D, which has no display. I followed these instructions, but because the cartridge reported it was out of toner before I initially removed it, the "low toner" light stays on when I reinsert the cartridge, even though its full now. The instructions for resetting the chip don't make sense, because the "ready" light won't come on, only the "low toner" light. There is also no "continue mode," so I don't know what that is referring to.
