I used this on one of my rent homes. Because of the door size I would have had to remove the door frame and a section of wall to get a new one in. One bath was Harvest Gold and the other was Avocado Green tub and surround in fiberglass with holes from old grab bars and one joint crack. They repaired the crack and filled in the holes. This was 5 years and 3 tenants ago. I've had no problems. It still looks new and at $800 a tub and surround was a lot less expensive than a carpenter, plumber and new material.
@equestrianwanderlust97776 жыл бұрын
Our company could have refinished it FOR you for $250. $800?? Outrageous
@saintejeannedarc94605 жыл бұрын
$800 a tub is the highest price I've heard, esp. if it's in the US. I got a quote for my clawfoot (65 in) of $350 inside, $500 inside and out. That would be local price though. Another one quoted $475 tax in, they send 2 men, will help bring my tub to the shed because of paint allergies and are charging a travel fee since I'm an hr or so out of the city. This is in Canada where you add at least 20%

The coating is as good as the man doing the job! That's a truism in this line of work . The materials will perform as advertised as long as the process is followed. I've used and tested most of them for coming up on 20 years. Very few head scratching results that always eventually taught invaluable lessons. This particular national franchise is considerably further ahead material and tech wise than where it was when the video was shot and currently is by far the industry leader. They simply reinvested in the research and other reputable laboratories instead of lining their pockets. Amazingly after all this time it's awesome to see that they still do the same thing. They put a few people like me to work testing new products and advances for years on end and cross-examined results for accuracy. I've personally done almost exclusively high end residential or large scale commercial projects across the country for the last 15 years that I could easily list on here today so some of you could go see them. They don't force or even try to ask me to say or not say anything that violates my honesty principles. We all work with someone who takes shortcuts...in EVERY line of work. These guys do have a system to quickly identify and correct those issues so even the few mistakes are capitalized on. It makes all the difference in the world if you stand behind your word. If any of you have experienced any adhesion issues then by all means you should require the work be warrantied no matter what company did the job. Working with them while being critical and skeptical, this system is today, to be perfectly honest, almost foolproof. I first got into this industry as a skeptic and fell in love with it because like the military, if you follow the logical process and pay attention to detail it really works well beyond the warranty. Generally people always remember when you do right by them but they never forget when they're lied to or taken advantage of. I've lived with refinished surfaces in my homes from the very beginning and experienced the advancements as they happened. I wish I had the time to start a page to show the capabilities of todays products and processes. Currently their website covers it in pretty good detail. Good luck out there y'all and just remember, do your homework and ask for references. Not some show room somewhere but actual work done. Due diligence! I'll answer any serious questions and go out of my way to help any of you if you really need help. Take care fam!

Interesting to hear them say they sprayed an epoxy primer. Miracle method likes to say they DONT spray epoxys that they go from wiping on their adhesion promoter/ bonding agent straight to topcoat. They also normally wetsand and polish after so for 500 or less that's an excellent job. Most independent contractors do not sand and polish afterward and can be half the price, so it depends on how perfect you want the tub to be. Polishing can be a lot of work, but if you want it as good as possible its a must.

Sure, you can find a new tub for as low as $150, some places even lower. However, take in to consideration the cost of removal and disposal of your old tub, removing a few rows of the bathtub tile surround to get work access, let's not forget removal of old plumbing and possible fabrication to get new plumbing to fit, the list goes on which ultimately equals a minimum of a week of bathroom downtime and at least $2000 in labor and materials. All for a new tub. Now some of us can afford to do such things and could care less about the time however, for those of us that would prefer an easier and more cost effective alternative, Fresh Look Refinishing is here to help!

Informative method since I used an epoxy years ago that peeled off. I used a good rust remover and sanded it down properly but I didn't use an epoxy leveler and the product I used did not implement an adhesive that is a "apply first to the surface (I used a two part epoxy that is mixed and a waiting time is achieved first before applying it) type". I have seen a lot of "refinished" porcelain tubs. This video shows someone who really took the time. However, the finishes I have seen have bubbled and peeled already. Some of them were just old, cast steel tubs because homeowners think it is too much work to replace a tub. Don't do that. If you need a new tub and the old one isn't "historic" or worth much - just replace it. If you have a historic piece, there are those who actually do "porcelain" work, and it means it is done correctly. Those who didn't believe me about some of these "refinishes" and had them done to some how save time, didn't save any money and regretted it later. The video above does seem to take a lot more time and more attention to refinishing then those I had witnessed, but usually if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

Excellent point. Also, I've never seen a tub refinish revisited after one month or longer to see how it holds up. You also can't use abrasive cleansers as you can with real porcelain so I'm wondering what's used that cleans as effectively. Nobody seems to want to say. I like this solution because it doesn't involve the demo and is useful for other applications but there are issues to consider. It's also recommended for bathroom sinks but never recommended for kitchen sinks as it could never withstand the abuse from metal utensils. The main point is that no painted refinishing material is as wear-resistant as genuine porcelain and this should always be noted as a REFINISH and NOT a "re-glazing", which is sometimes done to antique clawfoot tubs in a facility that bakes a real, new porcelain finish over the old in a kiln.

For the record, that 2-part filler is polyester and NOT epoxy. BTW, these tub refinishing products always yield dramatic-looking results, and they always show the newly-applied finish. I wonder what this re-finish will look like after 6 months or a year. I also suppose that abrasive cleansers can't be used on this new finish without dulling the finish, so I'm wondering what cleaning product(s) can be used to keep it looking new, and if car-polishing products can be used to maintain the luster.

Should have pulled the cabinet to have access to skirt of bathtub. Could have replaced drain too. Not getting silicone off the tub before etching will leave those areas un-etched and could make your coating peel or fish eye. Use a good industrial cleaner to remove all oil / soap from tub surfaces then give the tub a quick wet sanding with 150 grit (to remove any paint spotting or rust stains). Now acid wash tub, rinse and wet sand again. It's ready for an epoxy primer to bond to it. Not using primer is a mistake a lot of guys make to do these tubs fast. Let the primer set up for 30 minutes then apply the top coat in 3 coats (1 flash, 2 burns). Mask off the entire floor with brown paper, 18" around the tub with green paper and plastic sheet off everything else - vacuumed out your room will be like a spray booth. Your tubs will come out smooth with no debris and not needing to be polished. There are coatings out there where you can pull masking, caulk and install fixtures - no going back. They're "Billy approved" too, trust me I try a lot of them. You're right to point ot this is not a DIY job, and is the most toxic thing any tradesman will do in your home. 50% of the tubs I do are re-doing the other guys (failing) job. The best way to reglaze tubs is still old school (acid wash, primer ad top coat).

I would have walked away from this. The new backerboard,tile and grout will scratch the tub porcelain and easily scratch the new finish. Tub glazing must be the last step. Painters, wallpapers stand in the tub while painting the walls and ceiling and paint drips down. If the tub wasn't done till last it is not a big deal. Also, have the plumber install all the new fixtures and there is no worry about damage.

+shure46 One thing, though, apart from all the additional work and expense that goes with taking out and disposing of an old tub and delivering and putting in a new one, is the relative quality of the tubs. I'm not at all an expert, but just from looking at things at Home Depot and the like, it seems that so many tubs available nowadays are not nearly as substantial and solid as those from many years ago; they seem flimsy, basically. I suppose for a lot of money, it might be different, but I can't afford lots of money. The tubs where I live are from when the house was built, around 1960-61, and are in basically good shape, other than the surfaces, which had linings put on them many years ago (not by me). I'm hoping that the linings (in pretty tired shape now) can be removed, and the original porcelain somehow restored or refreshed.
@shure469 жыл бұрын
+AvalonMorley Yes I agree with that point , the old cast iron tubs are far superior , and of course terribly difficult to demo and replace (they are very heavy tubs) ..... I installed steel tubs in my house , "Americast" steel tubs , which have a thick plastic coating on the "backside" , and if you support the bottom with foam or grout during installation , they are good tubs for daily use and will last years and years .... they are lightweight which is very good to install ...... Installation is "key" , it needs to be done right for sure on steel tubs ...... My point was , once you have demo'd that much material , you are just about to the point where it can be replaced with one or two more "steps" ...... Bottom line , it's YOUR PROJECT , and do it the way YOU WANT !!!!!!! LOL .... and your way worked fine and looks great and you have a cast iron sturdy tub which does have a "better feel" when standing on it taking a shower .... They do feel more solid for sure

the $240 tub you are buying is cheap and thin. Plus you are not including the installation of the tub which would include parts and labors, the removable of the tile around the tub and the installation of new tile. This will add up quick and will usually exceed the cost of refinishing. Depending on the condition of the cast iron tub you are looking at $400-$800 for the average size tub....research is worth doing...

A bathtub like this is less that $150.00, new. this is way to involved with all the tools and equipment. Should someone have all the tools to restore a tub like this in the first place. Which is highly unlikely for you average home owner.
@DDEENY8 жыл бұрын
What you're saying regarding price is true, but removal of an old tub typically involves breaking out the tile and wallboard surrounding it to remove or demolish (in the case of cast iron) the old tub and to fit a new tub in place, because tub installation involves setting the tub into the framed space and then installing sheetrock or other substrate and then ceramic tile or other surface over and around the tub so that tub is very much buried in place. It's not nearly as simple as toilet or sink replacement. So for this reason tub replacement is typically part of a complete bathroom demo and remodeling, and if an owner simply wants a newer-looking or re-colored tub without destroying his bathroom walls in the process, then tub refinishing is the most sensible solution and worth the cost to avoid demolition and reconstruction which of course is much greater. The one caveat with refinished tubs (and that does mean REFINISHED [painted] and NOT "reglazed " which is another process altogether where tubs [typically clawfoot] are removed and a new factory porcelain finish is applied by prepping, coating with ceramic glaze and firing in a kiln to cure the finish] is that the new acrylic or epoxy finish is never nearly as hard and impact/scratch-resistant as genuine porcelain (which is virtually indestructible), so great care needs to be taken to never use abrasive cleansers of any kind that CAN be used with porcelain. And that's also why you never see refinishing recommended for a kitchen sink because the new finish could never withstand all of the abuse from metal utensils that kitchen sinks endure, although bathroom sinks are a candidate for refinishing. (Countertops are likely not recommended although obviously it's been done.) For that matter tiled walls are also a great candidate because of their limited abrasion, and finishing over the tile grout seals the grout and creates a surface that's easy to clean and no longer susceptible to mildew growth which is a classic problem with bathroom tub surround ceramic wall tile.
@lynnewebb13827 жыл бұрын
Whaaat? I can't imagine a homeowner having all the tools or skill to do this. As for a $150.00 tub to replace, you aren't counting quality. You are correct. Big Box stores sell $150.00 tubs and you get what you pay for. If you have a great old cast iron tub, you better hang on to what you have a have it refinished.

finished results look great, but you can buy a new bathtub for $240 at the home depot, this is not worth the money in my opinion.

Never use an epoxy on a steel tub! Never works!
@rimidalv77105 жыл бұрын
He didn't use epoxi..... Epoxi was a primer, he used urethane to refinish the tub.
@MemoGrafix9 жыл бұрын
I can only see doing this if the old tub is worth more than $500 old and worn out than spending money to refinish at $500. I can buy a bathtub brand new like the one in this video at $500 or less.
@normathepainter9 жыл бұрын
+MemoGrafix But you also have to take into consideration the cost of removal, disposal, getting the new one purchased and delivered to the site and then the plumbing for that. Most people wouldn't know where to begin. And most likely, that tub is a cast iron. Not the fiberglass stuff they make today.

***** I'll add flowers to it and make it one of those decorations people in the country do! Seeing as I live in the country to I don't think my neighbors would mind! :)

Your labor is worth something even if you do replace the tub yourself with a new one ,unless you like working for nothing.
@mingram158 жыл бұрын
I was just getting ready to mention installation costs. Ripping out the old tub and installing the new one. That's a major expense. Even if you can do it yourself, there's a lot of work involved. I fully agree Alan Smith!
@jogog92047 жыл бұрын
Nice job but $500 for refinishing, you can buy a NEW tub for $200 and it will outlast the older you one mate.

What a goofy video why wasn't the tile installed first ?When the tile man gets finished dropping and walking all over that cheap paint finish even if its covered it wont look like crap again .That is a cheap steel tub not a cast iron tub and it flex's and the paint will let go and the rust will come back .

That's a steel tub and is run of the mill at that. There was nothing special about that tub.

At $200 it would make sense.

Too much orange peel. Also, why mask off an unfinished wall?
@lonewolf5630810 жыл бұрын
I agree. I would have tiled the wall 1st and masked it off to save any possible damage to the tub from dropped tiles or shoes.
@Eduaim-ds1yc9 жыл бұрын
There is a good reason for that. That is a type of paint that would make it hard for you to apply anything to it. Always prepare for over spray because there is over-spray. I worked at locations where people came in to spray and it went beyond the room.
@joshrichmond610811 жыл бұрын
The paint won't stick to that!! Plus that tub must of had a liner on it that's y it looks like that liners trap water under it.. But that paint will never last paint don't stick to shiny Surface The tub needs etched not clean it will never last been doing this for 6 years trust me ppl may look nice but will never last
@oldhouse876511 жыл бұрын
simply not true, its cheaper to have a tub refinish off site

Mask? We don't need no stinking mask's. If you have ever fixed a boat or a Corvette body. You know this is the same thing. Gel-coat? Body putty?rust converter?prep-sol?wax and grease remover?ceramic top coat? When you slip and break your neck-who is it your wife is going to sue? Last guy who touched it and changed the factory coating. That's who. Make sure customer sign's a waiver. Where is the IMPROVED NON_SLIP????????????????????
