Grow Your Own Celery Right From A Celery Stalk! In this video, I show you how you can take a bunched stalk of Celery from the grocery store (or your garden) and grow it into a whole new set of Celery stalks! Super easy and lots of fun!
This is a great indoor and safe project to do with kids, and even seasoned gardeners will get a kick out of how the vegetable staple is so resilient! Regrowing vegetable scraps is often an effort that is more novelty than practical. Celery however is actually EASIER to regrow from a cut stalk than it is from seeds. Try it out!

I know there is a fevered and renewed interest in gardening and many of you are seasoned vets. But remember that there's a whole population out there that hasn't gardened before. Hi. I have beautiful leaves growing for weeks now, but I can’t seem to get roots. Should I scrap it and start again or am I doing something wrong that I can correct now?
@pdyt2009

To transition the roots from water to soil, slowly add the soil mix to the container with the water. Just add soil each day until it's wet soil and then moist soil. The roots will transition from water roots to soil roots,and then you can place the complete (now soil) and celery into a pot or into the garden. No shock, no worrying if the roots are deep enough in the soil.

Thanks. I watched lots of videos similar to this before, but unlike you they did not mention about that oxidize scaring. So when I saw that 3-4 days later all over the outside of my celery, I thought my plant is pretty much dying already and that I'm just wasting my time. Ty for that crucial info. I'll try this again.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Could part of the reason for that oxydation be from using a steel knife to cut it? I don't know if the celery will react the same as cutting lettuce with a steel knife. I have a plastic knife to cut off the bottom of my green leaf lettuce. I didn't think to cut the celery stalk with that same plastic knife.

Your information was quick and concise, right to the point, and I love that about this video. I also think it's great that you mention the phases the celery will go through. I grew some 2 years ago but I didn't know about the water step, still got some nice celery, but this time around I'm going to sit it in water first. I keep Guinea Pigs who love leafy veggies and the celery you buy from the grocery store has been scalped, there's nothing leafy there. I'm looking forward to doing this and I'm sure my piggies will especially love this. Thank you for your video.

People need to realize that Celery is a biennial. The bunch of celery that you buy at the grocery store represents the 1st. Year cycle. When you root the base and re grow it the plant reacts like it's in the second season. What you will be growing is the bloom stalk. You will not be growing another bunch of celery!

I haven't noticed a difference when I didn't pull the outside leaves off. They look like they're starting to rot but that's just nutrient relocation isn't it? That the roots are made out of? They have some brown spots but it's not rot. They'll just be the quickest to relocate cells to build roots from. (But you cut off their direct line to their nutrient supply.) I think mine put out roots much sooner too and I just expected to remove those leaves once they actually showed signs of turning into actual rot.

Thanks for the clear demo. I would have loved to see it through to harvest. I’ve had mixed results but am compelled to keep trying. My scallions do best. I don’t pull them! I slice them off at the soil level and let them keep growing. It speeds up the process and they multiply.

Well, that explains it! Mama smartass here - I sat the bottom of a bunch in water knowing nothing about celery. There were green shoots coming out of the center, but that rusty color on the tops of the old stalks made me think it was rotting. I put it outside in soil just in case, but again I didn't know what I was doing. I put it out in full sun in July, and it died off pretty quickly. Thank you!! Tonight I put the bottom of a bunch in water and we'll see if I can do it right this time.
