Hello Mary, I've been trying to find the contact info to the community gardens in Te.ple because I was very upset to hear hos theres children who dont have access to food. I know that people can buy pallets for $2 just make sure they are marked with code HT which means heat treated, not chemicals. I've been trying to get neighbors in my apt complex to start planting their food so they won't go without. I've finally seen that the city gardens are listed for sale as a possible commercial property for $100k. I'm very upset. I've got half of the money to pay for a residential lot but I'm wondering if I can win the lotto to find the other half?? I've got a floor plan to build a 4 car garage and apt to have a place to store the equipment but I'm not sure that I will have enough money to but it. Help. I want to offer the kids the opportunity to come plant their food, as long as they're salvaging from leftovers they won't need seeds. I've also read that in order to keep beans? Plant 1 bean per person in the family per type of bean so if they like pinto, or black beans or great northern beans or I've even grabbed 3 bags of 15 bean soup to use as a seed pkg. But I never expected that this land would be sold especially while we are having issues getting supplies. I think this world has gone crazy. 😥

The fact that we are living on a dying planet and the fact that we are in the midst of a pandemic, one sure thinks about more sustainability. Growing up in Europe after World War II, veggie gardening was a necessity but it was also a wonderful fun way to grow tasty grocery stores right in your backyard. Homesteading is one of my favorite subjects. To be somewhere far away being sustainable and independent is a dream I will always have. Sigh

@@dm5129 The planet isn't dying, though. When...and I do mean _when_ humans disappear, the planet will go on without us, eliminating all traces of our existence over time... I'm from Kentucky but my mom and dad moved to northern Indiana and my nanny would drive 8 hours to get me for the summer. Running barefoot in the garden with her was absolute heaven, I'm sure it's that way for you too. I can remember so well what her hands looked like because I always watched them gliding nimbly through the tasks she undertook daily. Obviously I could write a book about her. Anyway, that's why I live in Kentucky as an adult, always have.

I felt like I was barefoot in that garden too for a moment ❤️ reminds me of summers spent with my grandpa and his horses and watching him brush em, pick their hooves and how he just took care of them with so much joy and love even when the jobs seem tedious or gross to others. Wandering around the big old trout ponds with with my little brother as our old stud Showtime, the dogs and a funny little goat followed us everywhere we went. Catching and releasing snakes and tadpoles, chasing the chickens. ❤️ There's something special about being young and spending time like that with our grandparents. Some of the best memories are made that way.

You won’t get a carrot from a carrot top but as well as the greens you may get carrot seeds if those greens flower, you’ll then be able to plant the tiny seeds and then get lots of carrots. A worthwhile experiment especially for children xx

I picked up sprouted onions today and the manager said I could have them at no charge since they were fully sprouted (I’m no expert, so don’t know if that’s the proper description). Anyway, it’s worth asking if the food at the store isn’t selling - or perhaps get a discount. Good for you and best of luck

Best idea on getting freebies! Most people don’t want to buy sprouted veggies so you are doing them a favor and growing it for basically the cost of water and some soil .wtg

Great info! Tip: to force ginger to grow the nodes for new plants quicker, cut up a peeled onion and place several pieces in with the ginger root. In the same way that potatoes will grow their eyes if stored near onions, so will ginger. Once nodes are showing well, then cut ginger into pieces, each with a node, let dry for a day or so then plant. This tip came from an Asian lady's video about how to start ginger quickly, here on youtube.

Did you mean plant the onion pieces with the ginger? Or do you put the onion in the water with the ginger?
@curiousme1132 жыл бұрын
@@deborahhenderson149 dry storage before planting. If you keep your potatoes in a dark, cool, dry storage then put onions in that storage area. The chemicals released by the onions will help the potatoes or ginger to mature for planting quicker than normal
@bluefriend17232 жыл бұрын
@@deborahhenderson149 Hi. Her technique to force "eyes" to grow quickly on ginger pieces (and potatoes, too) was to put ginger root pieces in a plastic container, add in some pieces of peeled onion, (about 1/4 of the onion), put lid back on, and wait a few days. There was only onion and ginger in container, no water. Sure enough, after a few days the ginger roots had eyes developing. Once the eyes were established, she removed the onion, allowed the eyes to grow into shoots suitable for planting. The technique sped up the process of getting the eyes to develop into plantable shoots and it sure worked.

I love this stuff! My entire garden comes from kitchen scraps. I have 2 types of tomatoes, bok choy, white and purple cabbage, sweet peppers, green onions pretty successfully. Other things not quite so successfully, but the experimenting is a big part of the enjoyment. Most things I just stick in a pot with a good starter soil and it does well. I’ve done this too! I’ve tried anything I can get my hands on and that’s how I started gardening. I regrew onions, lettuce, potatoes even grew squash from the seeds, etc. And pepper seeds from store bought. I even have avocado plants and mango now too
@sidneyhudson77283 жыл бұрын
That’s brilliant you’ve been able to grow that I would just recommend not regrowing apple seeds as you have a 1/80000 chance it will taste nice and will not copy the variety you grow. They will most likely turn out as crabapples which are not nice. But good job on your other crops!
@BridgetKF3 жыл бұрын
@@sidneyhudson7728 You're right there, there is a risk. But if they turn out well, well then sweet, free apples. If they turn out to be crabapples? Cool! Those can be used as a substitute for lemon in some recipes due to how very sour they are.

*WATER TIP* ... when rooting kitchen scraps in water, use natural rain water. Best always to have a bucket or basin in your yard, maybe near the eaves downspout to catch rain water for rooting and watering. Try not to use city chlorinated water or household "softened" water. Those chemicals will slow or even inhibit rooting growth. You may find your scraps turning to mush before they have a chance to sprout.
@carmenpittman8842 Жыл бұрын
That explains why my sweet potato slips died. I just moved to town and didn't think about the chlorine. Thanks

In many places it is illegal to impound rain water. You are advising people to become criminals!

@HonestyIsAVirtue7 Жыл бұрын
For those who can't collect rain water due to the law.... Leave a pitcher of tap water sitting out for about 24 hours, and it will be chlorine free. Chlorine evaporates out of the water when you leave it sitting out in an open pitcher.
@Mrs.LadeyBug Жыл бұрын
@@anonymike8280The criminals are the ones who made those laws. It’s a God-given right to gather what He provides. However, I do use a Berkey filter for my indoor plants, and I collect snow to melt in as many containers/bins as possible. :)

While I don't often comment, today I feel I must. Watching your video, while having morning tea with my two pups at my side, has set the tone for a perfect day in spite of the dull rainy weather we're having here today. I'm relatively new to vegetable gardening so constantly looking for direction and new ideas. Your video has really inspired me to keep going. You were able to present a lot of great information that was not only clear and easy to understand, but also very enjoyable to watch. While this is the first of your videos I've watched so far, I will definitely be checking out some of your other videos. Thank you so much for this.

I love planting things indoors (have a lot of plant grow lights), especially since things are so hard to get in my remote location. A head of Iceberg lettuce (pathetic little wrinkled heads) cost over $13.00 a head a few months ago. Back down to $5.00, which is also steep. Didn't buy at the higher price but substituted other greens in my diet (celery, broccoli, sprouts, cabbage). Going to be more prepared for next winter.
