Today's video covers exercises that you can use to rehab a SLAP tear without surgery. A SLAP tear, which is a type of shoulder labrum injury, typically results in pain and shoulder instability. Shoulder instability describes a condition of increased joint mobility that makes the shoulder feel like it will slip out of the socket. Labral tears can cause significant pain and severely impair function. The good news is that they often respond well to rehab programs that are focused on building multi-planar strength and improving neuromuscular control. If you have a SLAP tear or suffer from instability of the shoulder, make sure to give physical therapy, specifically, neuromuscular control and strengthening exercises a try for 3-6 months before having surgery. Thanks Tom! I do the lateral arm lifts with my 8 lb dumbbells. I just began a new nanny job this week and the father happens to be a traveling PT!❤

Wow, fun to hear that he is a PT as well! Glad you are implementing the lateral raises already.

This was my report for a slap tear... There is an extensive labral tear. The tear begins anteriorly at the 2:00 position extends along the superior labrum to the posterior labrum terminating at the 7:00 position. The labrum is otherwise unremarkable. There is a intra-articular fracture of the posterior glenoid extending from the 9:00 to 7:00 position seen in association with this tear. No other glenoid abnormality is identified. There is no significant abnormality of the humeral head. I cannot see a significant abnormality of the glenohumeral. Surgery was out of the question as I'm self employed plumber, it took two years working with a physio to get back to normal. Pain was off the scale at times but pleased I didn't have surgery. Your body can definitely heal on its own from a slap tear, I weight train 4 times a week, still do plumbing with zero issues from shoulder now

Thank you for sharing your story! It’s so important for people not to rush into surgery as the body can heal in many cases with enough time and the right exercises.

@@RehabScience I had my operation date fixed, on my last trip to discuss with the surgeon something told me not to go through with it so I didn't.

@@delboy6384 this was me today I felt like I chickened out but seeing these comments have gave me more confidence in that I made the right decision without going through with the surgery as I wasn't happy with the success rate percentage either defo gonna stick to these exercises and hopefully my shoulder will stop clicking

@@duzabiit Well done mate. You will have ups and downs with pain, but I always felt that after an increase of pain when it was healing, when it calmed down my shoulder was in a better position that before the pain, it was like an ongoing cycle of recovery. I actually have to revert back to my letter of diagnosis to know which shoulder it was now that had the slap tear, thats how well it's healed on its own. With all the exercises too, I found actually stopping them for 3/4 days every so often was beneficial. My pain was crazy, at night in bed, at work, but pleased I let my body heal on its own. All the best👍🏻

Tom, how can you determine if/when PT for labral tears is not enough and surgery is needed?

This was my question as well. I have been recommended for surgery after an MRI that showed I have a torn shoulder labrum

@@angelasmith3037NEVER do surgery unless the pain is unbearble to where you physically cant rehab it, 60 percent of slap tear surgeries dont work

@ oh no 😭. Well the lawyer insurance will pay for surgery, and I can’t afford the rehab I would need

I’ve been doing some stretch excersise since I’ve tore my labrum. It’s been more than six weeks. Is it true that you shouldn’t start any until you see your doctor?
@RehabScience20 күн бұрын
Orthopedic and medical doctors are not rehab specialists and won’t know what to prescribe for this injury. It’s best to work with an orthopedic physical therapist. Usually, you can begin gentle strengthening exercises with a labral tear. The shoulder instability program in my book guides you through three phases of rehab. The first phase of the program has exercises that are often good to begin with when you have this injury. Here is an Amazon link for my book, if you want to learn more about it. a.co/d/0UtB9EG

If a gym exercise flares your pain up, it will need to be modified or removed until you have healed more.

Why I only feel one shoulder blade when doing pulling or pushing movements? What can the reason be
@RehabScience3 ай бұрын
It’s common for people to have asymmetry in terms of muscle activation patterns and how they perceive an exercise. I wouldn’t stress about it too much unless you notice a significant asymmetry in strength or limited mobility as compared to the other side.

@@RehabScience yes , you got it, I feel like I have less strength on the side that I don't feel my shoulder blade
