The rein back is a very helpful and important exercise.
Being able to shift the horses weight back and set him back on his haunches is an extremely valuable practice in equitation. It is very useful for rebalancing the horse, adjusting to carry the weight of the rider in a healthy way. It is also a useful correction for horses who have learnt to be heavy on the hands or to surge forward.
Today we take a look at how to ask the horse to rein back, I am always open to discover new things and believe that if it works, use it !
So when I discovered Buck a decade ago I was fascinated to see his approach. I tried it on all my horses with great results and have used it ever since.

Hi, I’m Susan Harden and my mission here is to support you in creating a mutually respectful, loving and rewarding relationship with your horses and guide folks home to their hearts though connecting with horses and nature. My connection with horses spans 5 decades and includes pony club, showjumping, 3-day eventing, classical equitation, dressage, equine-assisted therapy, “natural horsemanship" and more important than any label, deep love and respect for the horse which is what motivates me to do what I do.
Live and breathe horses was established in 1995 and has grown and transformed over the years parallel to my equestrian/life journey.

I have a very lazy horse and to help him learn rein back I parked him in the corner of the school with his head at the fence so he only has one option when I ask him to go back. This really helped. Also I do lots of back up from the ground with the voice command so he goes off my voice and seat aids nicely now

Dear ma, you need to put the bit up one hole on the bridle. Your horse is trying to put its tongue over the bit.

Hi, thank you for engaging . Actually the bit is just fine, he is mouthing the bit you are right, he is a very " talkative " horse yet he is not trying to and never has put his tongue over it.( which he easily could if he wanted to.) I love it when my Classical training ( school of Nuno Oliviera ) agrees with my more recent hero Buck Brannaman - any wrinkles by the bit on the corners of the mouth is slready pressure so when we want them as light as possible lets start with no pressure atall. great conversation point Susan x
