I got a question, I got a 87 ca[rice classic and when filling it with gas I have to pump it slow or else it will spit back out, I've seen most caprices where people pump fuel fast and leave the nozzle and walk away without it spitting back. what could be the issue?

@R3TЯ0-93: are your tank and fill tube original to the car? Maybe there is a kink in the fill tube that is restricting the inflow of fuel into the tank. Or maybe there is some gunk or build-up where the fill tube enters the tank. Can you still fill the tank up to the full 25 gal. but it just takes longer?

@@LongologoProductions the tank is after market was replaced 10 yrs ago. I think its only a 15 gal tank

@R3TЯ0-93: then maybe there is a problem with the venting. On top of the tank coming out of the sending unit there should be 2 or 3 hoses. One hose sends the fuel up to the engine, and another is to vent gas vapor up to the charcoal canister (on my ‘85 this is up at the front left corner of the car). Maybe the vent hose or hoses on your car are kinked or dry rotted out. Did the slow filling happen from the day the replacement tank was installed or did it get worse gradually?

The red wire you connected, wats it called mine is trash an im tryna replace it but don’t know the name of it

@Big Billy: I can’t find a specific name for it in the shop manual other than “fuel tank unit” wire. It runs from the connection at the sending unit on top of the gas tank back to a connector labeled “C877” that should be up underneath near the tail light wires. The circuit diagram shows the wire as “.8 PNK 30”. Sorry that’s all I could find right now.

I just installed a 24 gallon tank on my 88 box. My problem now is that it will not idle or stay running as if it’s not getting enough fuel or something to the carburetor . I put around 6-7 gallons in just for the first start up. I have a clear fuel filter and I can see the new gas in it so I’m assuming I did everything right

@therealnick3011: did you also replace your sending unit? Make sure there are no kinks or clogs in the fuel lines connecting to the sending unit. Make sure the rubber “bridge” connections from the sending unit to the metal fuel and vapor lines are not kinked or clogged. There is a possibility that something got bent or damaged when lifting that gas tank back up and re-securing it. While it will be a pain in the ass, I suggest dropping that tank again and double checking all connections and the sending unit. Good luck.

@@LongologoProductions Yes I replaced the sending unit as well. The old tank and sending unit were basically rusted out. I may have to drop the tank again but I’m going to check my filter on the carburetor tonight first. I can see the new gas inside of the fuel filter so the unit has to be pumping right?

@@therealnickd3011 : if the gas is making it that far then yeah probably the sending unit and line are ok up to that point. Was the engine running before you replaced the tank and sending unit or did you replace them first?

@@LongologoProductionsThe car actually ran , idled , and crank fine but I was aware of the half tank of very very old gas.. So before doing any major driving I went ahead and changed tank and unit. Hopefully it’s just my carburetor filter . Thanks for the response!

How do you bleed air out the fuel system just install new gas tank and now it’s don’t wanna idle and shuts off at stop lights or rpm and wasn’t doing that b4 I installed the new tank

@box chevy zay: assuming you don’t have a clogged fuel filter or kink in the hose when you installed the new tank, that first start on the new tank install will take many pumps of the gas pedal to start for the first time. Then it should run fine. You should have fuel in the bowl in your carb too. If it’s stalling like that maybe your fuel pump is on its way out?
