Likely the best how-to video I have ever watched. Easy to follow with your oversized instructions. I learn more from KZbin than I do from manufacturers' sites. In case you read comments I have what appears to be a serious problem to which you may have a quick solution. My Windows 10 (DELL) will not shut down. I have to shut it down with a force shut-down. When I turn it on it tells me it is trying to install updates. The same result every time (over two months now) "cannot install updates, returning PC to its previous configuration" not exact quote. This takes about 12 minutes. As far as I can tell I have lost no functionality. I have tried all the options in the Security and Update menu and never get past the "start now." The machine immediately returns the note "cannot reset this PC." I am willing to go deep in to the reset process but am blocked at an early stage. I am not a techie but will try rebuilding the machine including all programs if I can just get it clean. Any tips? Again, great video.

Thanks for your kind words. As for your issue, sounds like your Windows updates maybe corrupted or damaged. You can try deleting the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder, however it requires stopping the update service which you can do from an elevated CMD prompt with "Net stop wuauserv" without the quotes. After deleting the folder, you can do "Net start wuauserv" to restart it and that recreates the folder. See how that goes.

Good question maybe worth making a video about. using a bootable disk can be better knowing it's not compromised or infected. Depending on your reason for resetting the PC to begin with. if virus infected, or hacked, I'd use a bootable disk. I wouldn't trust the built in tool.

Thank you. I don't believe I have a video on that but if it's what I'm thinking, there is a solution to run the CTFMON.exe in C:\Windows\System32\ctfmon.exe Add it to autostart to run at startup so you don't have to run it each time.

By default, it only wipes C drive and the hidden system partitions you don't see. But never trust that, always backup.

Unfortunately it has to remove all programs regardless of what option you choose. Factory reset means whatever programs were installed from the factory are included, which will be trial versions of possibly a different version of the software you currently have, if any software at all. I would say, don't count on any software being saved.

it's been a while since I played with dual boot, but they should be on two separate partitions so reinstalling one shouldn't affect the other. But if the boot partition gets reset, that might remove the dual boot info and it won't know how to boot to Ubuntu again.

I'm not sure I know what you mean. Is it not able to find the hard drive to install Windows on and asking for the driver for the hard drive? Some disks require downloading a drive from another computer.

if I recall correctly, it will prompt you for the option if it recognizes a second partition. normally I believe it ignores the second partition. Always good to take a backup just incase which you should be doing regularly anyway.

Most likely yes it will help. But if the issue is the hard drive it self, it won't help because the drive might need replacing. You'd need to test the hard drive health first to see if that is the issue.

You don't need to buy a new key or license. the hardware remembers the Windows. Just use any DVD or bootable USB stick to reinstall Windows. Just make sure you use the same Windows, like if it's Home, don't use Pro or it won't activate.

Thanks for your comment, there must ben an issue with the physical hard drive that is causing this to happen. You may have to test the hard drive health and potentially purchase a new drive to do a fresh install with.

Yes, but you need to be careful because there is an option to wipe all drives and you need to be sure you don't choose that. Otherwise, you're fine.

It might help if the problem is in the operating system but that's a drastic fix. If the issue is the hard drive it won't help. I would recommend testing your hard drive health first, and run SFC /SCANNOW as a PowerShell Administrator.

They are basically the same thing. resetting the PC involves reinstalling Windows preserving data, or wiping the data. If you have to use a disk, it can be called resettling or reinstalling depending on how you do it, but it basically is the same thing.

Thanks for your question. Yes, regardless if pre-built, brand name, clone, or one you installed, they all have the ability within Windows 10 to reinstall. Also some brand names have their own recovery partition that includes all the drivers and other pre-installed software. That would have another method of recovery.

Yes, I would say 99.9% guaranteed. Depending on the type of hack or infection. if it was an intelligent enough infection to get into the portion of the files where it will reinstall itself along with Windows, but I've not heard of this yet. Although with technology, anything is possible and someone is always going to be the first. If you suspect an advanced threat, then I recommend a disk. Trust you gut on this one.

Truthfully, I had a blank computer last year that I had wiped out and then I loaded a $219.99 copy of good ole Windows 10. My problem is that I set it up ALL wrong. I want to be the administrator, CEO, Head Hauncho, etc. but I don’t know how properly. Currently I can’t tell if I’m the administrator, user or what and I want it done correctly this time. There was also some more stuff that I didn’t like the way I had set up so that’s why I’m sort of wanting to wipe it all out to get a fresh start PLUS, something is using huge amounts of my storage!!!!

Super helpful video! I do have one question though. I'm a student and I've been using a pirated version of Photoshop and illustrator for my assignments. Very recently my company where I'm interning required me to work on a licensed adobe xd file which left me no choice but to download the Adobe creative cloud. Unfortunately it wiped out all my pirated adobe softwares. I wish to reinstall my old photoshop and illustrator softwares for my college work, but I'm unable to do so even after uninstalling creative cloud. I've now received a separate work pc for my office work so I'm free to reset my personal pc for the sake of reinstalling my old softwares. What's the best options do you recommend in such a case? Do I choose the 'remove all the data' option for 'keep my files' will do the job? Would really appreciate your response on this as I'm unable to do any college work without these softwares.

Thanks for your question and sorry to hear you went through this disaster. I don't recommend pirating because it can contain viruses and otherwise open your computer to being hacked. With that said, you could trying doing a system restore back in time before this happened. Hopefully you have a restore point before all this happened and it will remove the new stuff you installed and reinstall the old pirated software you had.

Thanks for the reply Daniel. I agree with your suggestion of not using the pirated version however, being a student I can't afford the expensive Adobe softwares. Regarding system restore, I do have the Adobe setup with me in a separate pendrive. The only problem is the Adobe creative cloud has already tracked all the unlicensed softwares in my system and have eliminated them. Hence installing the setup from my pendrive is pointless without completely erasing the old data as the creative cloud would never allow me to use the unlicensed versions. I'm already aware that my laptop will need reset without which I won't be able to use the softwares again. Just figuring out the best way to do that without causing harm to my system.

System restore is different from reset. Restore only removes all traces of Adobe licensing in this case. It won't affect all your programs or any data. if you do a reset it will wipe everything and all programs need to be reinstalled. if you choose to not keep data, that has to be backed up too. Thanks for your question. It will remember your user account. You have the option of keeping your data or not when you start the process. Your PC is guaranteed to work better unless the is an underlying hardware problem.

When you reinstall it should only wipe the main drive, not the secondary, but I would take a backup or temporarily disconnect the second drive just incase.

Yes, the hardware remembers the license key. So you are correct, you don't have to re-enter it.

Thank you. This rule has changed a little over time. When Internet is connected, it forces you to use an online account. I setup computers purposely with Internet disconnected so it can then setup as a local account. Now in Windows 11 they force you to have Internet, but the very latest version allows you to choose a local account even with Internet connected. Little work arounds :)

You mean after everything is reinstalled and up and running, the computer wants to shut off and on by itself? That's very strange. if it wasn't doing it before, sounds like software, but a fresh install of Windows should have fixed software issues. Try booting in safemode for further troubleshooting

It should only touch your main SSD but I always recommend a backup just incase. or unplug the other drive during reinstall. Things don't always work the way they should.

Sounds like there's corruption in the part of the hard drive where the installation media is. The drive maybe bad or you may just need to do a little scan like SFC /scannow on the drive if you can somehow get to a command prompt.

I didn't like the way that Microsoft forced me to use an MS account on my new computer. I watched the whole video, then attempted the reinstall. When I get to 6:45 in the video, my screen does NOT have the option for OFFLINE ACCOUNT. Thoughts? Maybe the new version of Win10 does not allow it anymore.

Using the reinstall method using the same account you already have. So if you were already signed in using a Microsoft account, it will keep it that way. For me, I was using a local account but Microsoft pushes to switch to using a Microsoft account. One trick is when doing a fresh install, don't connect a cable and don't connect to your WiFi during setup, it will prompt you several times asking to connect to the Internet. Just keep choose No, you don't have internet. Then it will allow you to setup a local account. I think this is a good prompt for me to create a video on how to switch from Microsoft to a local account.

This is not an easy answer. You'd have to basically reinstall Windows on another larger drive, or clone it to another drive which moves everything including programs and data. At that rate, you could just buy a bigger drive to clone it to. Aside from moving Windows, there a bunch of programs you can move and default storage locations I have videos on how to do.

Theorically I was able to remove it and runned different anti-malware programs to check for any suspicious files. Sadly my files remained encrypted and I decided to fully clean and reset my Windows. My question is the following: Is it enough to get rid of the malware? Or should I download Windows from the official site to an USB stick to make sure no infection stayed on my device?

Thanks for your question. First it's important to make sure you understand that no matter what you do, the files will still remain encrypted and all you can do is either pay the ransom, which I don't recommend, or recover from a backup which you hopefully have. Aside from that, the built in reinstall should be fine but no guarantees that the recovery environment isn't infected too, but I've never heard of it happen. Personally, I would wipe the drive, reinstall Windows from a USB stick and recover data from backup.

Now I will ask my friend to let me help download the orinigal Windows from the official site from a different PC. Just to make it sure, everything will be full clean. Thanks but I understand you are stuck. is it because you have no mouse to navigate? Or buttons grayed out? I can't troubleshoot here but those are a couple things to help determine next step. Maybe you need to plug in an external mouse or boot from a USB? Yes, I believe this will help but it's overkill. You can probably just uninstall any video driver software and delete video display drivers from device manager.

Those files would be deleted. So if you have Google Chrome profile to backup or Game data for example, it might be a good idea to backup certain folders in Program Data folder and in your %userprofile%\AppData\Local

Depending if there are issues with more than one device on your computer, then the issue could be in the Windows software or the hardware. Reinstalling Windows will fix the software side, but if it's a hardware issue, you will still have issues. Maybe a driver problem to look at first.

You may have some driver issues not to mention RAM and CPU compatibility by changing the motherboard. If you are looking for a performance boost, replacing the motherboard is not ideal at all. Reinstalling Windows, yes. But maybe adding more RAM and upgrading to a faster SSD drive. Maybe even upgrade CPU if possible. if the motherboard is that old that it can't handle the fastest RAM and CPU you want, then you are basically looking at a whole new computer.

Depending what option you choose, it will give you the choice to keep your files, but always deletes programs. If you upgraded all those components, it's like a new computer and Windows might give you a hard time about activation but crashing can be a number of issues that needs more troubleshooting. Even though new parts, doesn't mean it is not potentially faulty. Sorry can't help here, in this case.

Downloading and installing other language packs only converts parts of the pc. The control panel remains in french, irrespective of what language pack you install and set as display language. 😂 Am doomed to reinstall 😔

Thanks for your question. Drivers will be deleted too and then installed from Microsofts database that it knows of. Any drivers missing you can go to the manufacturers website and download the specific drivers from there.

Hi Muhammad. If you tried several Malware removal tools, etc and it's not working, that might not be a virus anymore, but just a damaged system that could be the result of a virus or the result of some failed update or dying hard drive. Who knows. Reinstalling Windows will fix it but that is an extreme fix. It's cheaper to do that than pay someone to troubleshoot. Maybe try Tweaking.com repair tool which is also free.

Thanks for your comments and glad you found my video helpful. You might find your old files in C:\Windows_old which I think is the exact spelling when it backs up a copy of your Windows profile. in there you should find Users folder with your old username and all your documents and files.

if you are choosing the option to preserve data, it will keep the user profiles and if one is damaged this makes some sense. You can create a new profile, if necessary for the problem profile. Then delete the old one after backing up the data which you can access normally via c:\Users folder

might have to do this i keep getting pfn list_corrupt bsod and last night i got another one and upon reboot i got another bsod that said WHEA uncorrectable error i tried running multiple programs such as making sure my drivers are up to date, i ran command prompt to scan for corrupt files it said they where fixed ive done a windows memory diagnostic test like two times, i replaced my ram cards and my m.2 ssd but still every now in then i keep getting pfn list corrupt this seems to happen when im playing Elden ring or exiting out of a game but it has happened while watching youtube videos as well. does any one have any suggestions if i get another BSOD?

This could be a hardware problem or software problem. Sounds like if happens normally during games or video, that it might be your video card. Try updating your video card driver or if already up to date, remove and reinstall the driver. Also could be the physical video card. Try removing the video card and using the internal if you have one before spending money on a new card and find out that isn't it. Running SFC /Scannow could also help with finding corruption in the operating system.

What do you mean by "Internet drivers". it will reload basic drivers for your hardware using that from Microsoft's database of drivers. Other drivers may need to be reloaded from manufacturer website.

Hello and thanks for your question. Sounds like there maybe a hardware problem if reinstalling Windows still didn't work. Unless a conflict with some 3rd party software you had installed. That's a great idea for a video. You need a license and it's easy to do from within Windows. no need for USB or DVDs. Just inside Windows in the System settings. It shows you have Pro and there should be a button to upgrade to Pro. it will take you to the store app to purchase, download and upgrade. it runs just like a Windows update. later I can make a video on it.
