We’ve come to the end of another year, and it’s a good time to take stock and consider how we’d like to grow and change during our next trip around the sun. In this episode, Dr. Rick and I focus on what supports us and what holds us back from reinventing ourselves and becoming all we wish to be. We talk about how we’d like to change over the next year, different approaches to new year’s resolutions, do a little digging around in my psyche, and highlight a few practical things we can do to support our change.
Key Topics:
0:00 Introduction
1:55 Balancing different frameworks for goals and intentions
6:15 Forrest looking for more freedom and less constraint
8:35 Integrating the mundane and profound
11:50 What supports us in changing? What constrains us?
13:50 Mentors and other sources of encouragement
22:30 Reverting to old patterns when returning to old environments
28:15 Self-acceptance making change possible
30:05 Trim tabs and other forms of psychological leverage
36:10 Diligence, effort, and consistency
38:40 Addressing deficits and reassuring yourself
41:20 Relaxing around inevitability
42:35 Embracing the joy of possibility and change

I simply cannot just sit and watch. Definitely one of those channels where you need to sit with a notebook to jot down and reflect on every nuggets of wisdom shared by Dr Rick and Forrest.

Forrest: I’m 70. One of my biggest rewards I’m reaping is doing yoga twice a day for most of my life. Do that stretching routine!😊

Hi Ava, I'm 35 years old and a larger woman with fibromyalgia. Do you recommend any gentle yoga I could start doing daily? I just find regular yoga is a major struggle as my body won't do that far lol. 😕

@@sparklingloveandlight Hi Stacey. Yes, I have some suggestions. Set up a nice padded area on the floor. If you just start by lying on the floor, bringing your knees up, hold on to them and just roll side to side, as is comfortable. This gives a good massage to your lower back. And your neck gets some natural stretching. Then from there you can expand to do other stretches. Just getting down on the floor gets you started.

This channel speaks to me watching how Forrest and his father interact… how Dr Rick doesn’t take offense or is threatened by Forest having some psychological things to work through… sometimes as a mom I feel like if I was a truly good mom my kids wouldn’t have issues but of course I know they will anyway and perfection doesn’t exist. Dr Rick and Forrest have a way of being kind to themselves that makes it easy to be with other people’s struggle. Thank you for this example I believe it will help my parenting and my children immensely.

I’m so different from Forrest. I’ve been a follower of various teachers or paths, but in recent years I’ve been more my own person, self-determined. In my older age, I’m finally growing up,so to speak.

Hi Forrest, I've recently started listening to your podcast and I'm really enjoying it! Your emphasis on personal responsibility for change resonates with me. It really is up to us to kick-start the change we want to see, isn't it? I also appreciate how you highlight that change is an ongoing process rather than a one-off event, and a challenging one. It can take some time and perseverance, but it's about choosing a new direction consistently, even when it gets hard. Also, kudos on highlighting what we can't ignore: our interactions, shared experiences, and collective challenges with others can greatly influence our paths. We're all learning from one another, providing support, and evolving together, adding a whole new dimension to personal growth. Will keep watching and listening... Thanks for putting your experiences and reflections on them out "there". Cheers, Lara Augusta

I'm a little like Forrest, too. As a child I was hypersensitive to people laughing at me / judging me / looking at me or even taking my picture. But I come from a family of very funny people on my dad's side, and by the time I was a teenager I realized I was witty and could make people laugh. I was in control then; I could ensure people laughed with me rather than worrying they might laugh at me. In every other way, I was and still am an introvert and am loathe to ask for help from anyone. Women stereotypically will ask for directions when lost, whereas men stereotypically will drive around in circles for hours before they ask for help, but in my long and happy marriage, it's exactly the opposite. My husband will seek help from any stranger, while I'll refuse to admit "defeat." I identified with what Forrest was saying about being too self-regulated, and I loved Rick's question implying that being open to input and guidance from others might actually be freeing (or that's how I interpreted the question). So true!

First comment from London, UK. I really appreciate both of your work. Can we please have a talk on illness anxiety in 2023? In particular, anticipating an illness when life is going well and catastrophising the outcome of that illness. I was always on edge as a child growing up in a dysfunctional space. Waiting to be shouted at or scapegoated. This has affected my Adulthood were whenever life feels fulfilling i can't help think about whats around the corner, will I get sick and it ruin my happy state etc..Im in treatment for this ,I just think it would be nice to hear you both speak about this as there are those who can't afford Therapy.

That kind of anticipatory anxiety is common and very painful, I'm sure we'll talk about it.

You guys are just wonderful! And I must say the Foundations of Wellbeing has absolutely saved my life. It truly is the Foundation for all the inner work I engage in daily. I haven't finished it yet but I am going slowly and thoroughly and incorporating other things. I come from child abuse and I intend to move beyond all it created in me. I must say this has been my most rewarding year because I truly am feeling permanent changes within myself and it is a gift and it is just amazing! Hugs to both of you! Keep going in to those areas of complete self awareness. You are holding the candle and" the staircase can be treacherous" but I am right behind you!

great episode, guys, i got a lot from this one and i expect to return to it several times. irt your comments at the end, i always appreciate hearing about both of your lived experiences, but i particularly relate to many of your former and current ways of being, forrest, so i find it really useful to compare and contrast with my own. i love the balance across/within your podcast episodes between the "meat and potatoes" kind of accessible explanations of what goes on inside people in general, and then the pulling from/reflections on both of your personal material. i'm really looking forward to whatever you guys do in the coming year 💚

I absolutely love this channel. I listen to you on my walks or when Im drawing like i do now. Personally I like when you use yourself as references, because it becomes easier to relate in someway and also more intimare which is always appreciated. I believe the modern world needs more intimacy. I love the dinamic between you and I wished I had that with my dad, hopefully i can have it with my future child🤗 what i also like is that you know what you talk about, you do research, there are some lavarage into what you are saying and that you mix it with personal experiences makes the perfect combo. Im very glad I found you. Thanks for all you do👌😊

Love your channel! So natural, wonderfully honest and friendly, with a fine blend of psychology, philosophy and self development. Right up my street. Listening to this episode I've realised I've had a long haul of diligence focusing on my creative life for many years now without getting the material rewards I'd hoped for when I first set out on this path. This has caused some weariness to creep in lately affecting my writing motivation in particular and ive allowed chunks of procrastination to impede m e without understanding fully why. Listening to you both, I think my spirit is now ready to be open to mystery for 2023 and certainly not wanting to set goals. My creative life is vital to me and I have a novel to finish but im going to go easy on myself and be open to new experiences and new people at the same time. Thank you so much for this talk. Wishing you both a happy new year from the scottish borders, UK.

I found you a couple days ago and working through EMDR and now RRT your topics have really resonated with the level of healing I'm at and trying to strive for. You and your father both have such interesting insights and play off each other so well. I really hope your channel keeps ending up in people's feeds and gains more views because after listening to a couple episodes I went to subscribe and was shocked you didn't have 300,000+ followers because your video quality and content is great! Thanks again

Forrest, I would encourage you to study some form of therapy, Ihave found immense gains by following this path. Troubled for many years I have seen standard training help my few clients, whilst further specific training helped free me from an ailment of 40 years duration. I studied DBT which moved me into counseling in a life saving way. So with your media presence you will help many beyond your current situation. Although you are already a great contributor to mental well-being.
