I tried releasing the putter this week but the putter landed in my ball path and blocked my ball from reaching the hole. How can the pros do it? Do the caddies grab the flying putter before it lands in the path of the moving ball?

just found your video on putter release and thanks you for the ease of explanation and the graphics. would like to know if you can comment on the putter grip that is best for release. I currently have large super grips but I dont think this will allow release as you demonstrate. thanks John

I like it. It sounds correct. These negative comments on Herr don't one putt around the course like I typically do. Even still...this relaxing or releasing the putter head with the left wrist seems correct. Relaxed hands seems to help is this as well.

The idea that the grip sits in the lifeline, is one that is repeated frequently, but two great putters, Woods, and Faxon, and many others, play with the pad of their left hand on top of the grip. That highlights a fact about putting, there are many ways to putt well, and few absolutes.

And Ben Crenshaw to add to that list, a player who was influential in helping Tiger become one of the greatest putters of all time.

..probably many others as well. Putter on lifeline feels weak and frail. Putter seated on left pad is much more dynamic and responsive. It’s like one is mechanical and robotic VERSUS dynamic and sensitive. Keep away from left hand lifeline, my advice 👍

Great video...so after impact the handle stops moving and the blade moves forward ..is that what release means?
@cdunne1620
@cdunne1620 11 ай бұрын
Release means there is a natural arc left after impact of the putter head, it just happens don’t make it happen. Tiger said he putts best when he “draws his putts”. When you put a slight ‘draw’ on your putts you’re ensuring the release happens and you will get solid contact, you’ll rarely be short of the hole. It’s very very slight though so be careful, in my practice swing I don’t draw, on the actual putt I do draw a tiny bit. This makes sure I don’t overdo it, the body has a terrible tendency to get used to a motion and then that becomes neutral motion and further leads to overdoing it (compounding)….so keep it very subtle and be wary of entraining a hook instead of a draw 🤪

Baloney ! If you swing the putter head on a SLIGHT arc and accelerate through impact the putter will “release “ automatically ! It’s not brain surgery people!
@cdunne1620
@cdunne1620 15 күн бұрын
It is brain surgery actually, the more accurate and precise the better the result, just like brain surgery. Putting is a game of millimetres or thousands of an inch. Paralysis by analysis is a thing but it’s not as simple as you are implying
@shagbag9056
@shagbag9056 14 күн бұрын
@@cdunne1620 it actually is that simple. Even some of the best players in the world fall into the trap you are easing into . Rory for example needs to go back to putting like a kid instead of chasing putters and putting coaches .

@@cdunne1620 The hole is 4.25” in diameter. I can 100% guarantee you that NO decent putter in history has focused on squeezing the ball in a millimeter ! Anyone who thinks like that will undoubtedly soon be trading in his putter for a bowling ball!

Left wrist cup or breakdown isn’t correct or that thought can hurt your stroke. At impact your frozen in time for a split second then the club head ever so slightly goes inside the line of infinity. I know what you mean however having people even minutely thinking of breaking down the left wrist will cause inconsistency.

Whoever came up with the term "release the golf club", whether it's the putter, irons, driver, really did a disservice to the golf community for the last 60 years. Nobody knows what that means, or how to do it, and it's an inaccurate description of what really happens. "release" implies there letting go of something. This is not the case at all. In fact there's a continuation of what happens on the backstroke, in the follow-through, in a golf swing or putting stroke. Anytime I hear an instructor use the term "release" I know to move on because he's parroting something he's heard.

Totally agree. Release the putter? Throw it at the pin? Current buzz word from many KZbinrs. Complete hype. Over complicating everything, the part about muscles in the hand and arm? What utter nonsense!

While your basic concept of releasing is sound, you knowledge of a putting stroke is zero. Absolutely NO good putter today goes SBST. That is because under the very rules of golf the shaft must be on a tilted plane. Physics alone mean that a SBST stoke is thus 100 percent manipulation which NEVER EVER REPEATS. It is 100 percent luck. I call it the Mary Chapin Carpenter stoke,"I feel lucky". Also the real purpose of the release is to put the putter under it's own balance and momentum. A putter under it's own momentum has exactly zero propensity to twist. This is why the master himself, Ben Crenshaw insists on an ultra-light grip with the putter ready to fall out of your hands. This is the only way you can get the putter released to itself. In effect you take yourself out of the putt. The people who make "The Putting Arc" would consider this video and absolute nightmare.

Absolute garbage what good putter putts with all these moving parts, none , the good ones are trying to eliminate any movement in the wrists also 95% strike the ball at the beginning of the upward arc of the stroke to minimise the ball skidding and accentuate over spin or immediate roll.

Dont agree with your statement straight back. Physics dictate that when using your shoulders in the putting stroke the putter will come back slightly on the inside. Anything else is caused by manipulation of the putter

Would never copy anyone or listen to anyone with a set up like that! Breaking down the wrists and stopping the left wrist abruptly is NOT what the pros do.... awful advice.
