Well done, Curt! I get so tired of seeing this question online and then people saying "You need this" or "I sell this" for that job. Always more than one way to do things, people just need to be creative!

THANK YOU! This has been my largest struggle when working on these and I never, ever considered any of these options.

I am currently working on a 228E and Coleman apparently used red Lock-Tite on the threads of the valve and it refuses to come off. Any advice?
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs Жыл бұрын
Oooh, red is the worst. Heat is your friend for removing locktite but you'll need to be very careful to not also remove the solder that holds the bung and the paint from the fount. Start with a heat gun and work up from there, go slow and be careful.
@HighSierraBob
@HighSierraBob Жыл бұрын
@LanternLabs the heat gun helped, but it wasn't enough. I had to use a small pipe wrench to hold the fount and then an adjustable wrench to turn the valve. It was very tight!

Any on how to remove a check valve without a check valve wrench? I believe one of my lanterns and my 425 stove tank check valve failed as they aren’t holding pressure and I’ve replaced the pumps. I was a tad shocked how much a check valve wrench is😳 thank you

Get a check valve tool, proper tools cost proper money. You've only got to ruin one before the tool pays for itself.

Hello. I have a lamp Coleman 639C. There was a problem of flicker. The lamp burns well, but flickers a little. Changing the fuel does not help. How to solve a problem? Thank.
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 6 жыл бұрын
A little flicker or pulsing is pretty common, especially on a lantern that hasn't been used a whole lot. I find that they tend to sett,le down in use. If this generator has been used a lot a new generator might help. You might also inspect the metal of the burner frame, by that I mean the thing the burner is attached to, if its got a leak on the outside edge wind might make it flicker...

Thanks for the help! Vaporizer is in good condition, little used. I have several Petromax lamps and two 639C. One 639C worked fine long time (2-3 tanks), but it began to flicker-pulsate during combustion. It looks like an excess of air: when you plug one of the two air tubes with your finger, the flicker disappears but brightness is normal. When two tubes are plugged at once, the brightness decreases sharply (little air). Looking for air leakage on the edge of the outer side of the frame (air tubes)? Or around the place where the manthle is attached? Sorry for my English.

The frame itself, its made of 2 parts crimped together, sometimes the crimp fails or it gets broken a little. If too much air is your problem thats where I'd suspect. I'd also suspect the generator in that case, a little dirt/carbon in the gas tip would limit the amount of fuel which would mess up the fuel/air mix.

Hello. Thanks for the help! You were right: disassembled the generator, cleaned the gas nozzle (it did not seem dirty), cleaned the generator evaporation springs (there was a black glossy coating, what could it be?), Put it back and now the flickering is gone completely! Manthle glows very bright white! I suspect that the last tank of kerosene was of poor quality. Greetings from Krasnoyarsk! Sorry for my English.

The black coating is carbon, its a natural byproduct of the fact that the generator gets hot on one side and not the other. You'll have to clean the generator regularly or it'll pack full of that stuff and need to be replaced. Petromax don't have the issues because the generator sits in the rising column of heat above the mantle.

Pretty cool. Thanks, but anybody that uses those beauties is an inveterate wrench-turner. By the way, did you ever make a video on the Vietnam era lanterns? I have one that still works even after about 30 years of buying it at a swap meet. I think I paid about $10-$15 each for three of them. It still has gas in it from about 3 years ago and still lights. Noisy little bugger. I love it.

A strap wrench around the base of the lantern will help you put more torque on it. It can be hard to hold the rim adequately. Pay attention to your body mechanics, swing your body not just your arms to generate more force.
