How to remove a stripped stuck oxygen sensor. Specifically the downstream rear driver's side sensor on a 2004 Infiniti QX56.
Here is the link to the extractor socket set I used to remove the sensor: (used the 7/8" socket)

OMG thank you. I saw your video and decided to buy one of these extractor kits. The o2 sensor in my car was 25 years old and stripped like hell. I couldn't get it out. I tried your method and I managed to get it out in a few minutes. Thank you :)

A HOSE CLAMP SAVED ME!! My O2 sensor was stuck, went to home depot and got a big enough hose clamp to fit on the O2 socket. Sprayed PB Blaster, let it sit, attached the O2 socket to the breaker bar, added a cut piece of pipe and BOOM! Came off with ease!

Last ditch effort. I prayed, asked Jesus to give me wisdom. Short while later I thought. " tie rachet strap end to pipe wrench, then ratchet to a tree in front of my car... backed up slowly. 😢 It came lose, thank you Jesus, after one week struggling, then rounded the nut, near ready to give up.

Much respect to you for getting that 02 sensor off the overwhelming feeling you've experienced is so surreal. I am going through this with my upstream 02 sensor and just purchased a reciprocating saw to cut mine off then use a regular socket.I seen your video too late about the extractor but may still can use it after cutting the sensor off because it became rounded around the edges of the sensor definitely using more anti-seize next time the factory grease is useless over time well God speed and thank you again.

Today I had a tough time getting the new upstream O2 sensor to take threads until I put a little more hi-temp anti seize on it. What anti seize compound that came on it was just not quite enough. Just remember not to overdo it, and keep it on the threads, not on the sensor head itself.

I found the BEST way to remove o2 sensors is, if you can the night before, spray them with WD-40 or any kind of nut buster. Then add heat with a torch. Map gas burns pretty hot. You can use propane if your in a pinch. Spray, heat for a few good minutes then get your BOX end wrench on it. Or a o2 sensor socket, if your planning on cleaning them up. (Box won't fit over your electrical plug) Then take your time, heat and tap your wrench/ratchet handle with a 3 Lb hammer. just a little. re heat until it moves. Then simply by hand tighten/ loosen that 1st thread breaking up all the rust. keep re heating and spay in till you can just turn it out. Main thing is, you need heat and alot of patience. Take your time. Also, some sprays are flammable so use at you own risk.

Help if anyone knows the answers. Can you use a impact wrench to remove the O2 with this? FYI: O2 sensor is rusted & seized: no luck by using O2 Socket/Clamp, Torched & Bolt Extractor Even used with extended bar- extractor is biting on 22mm (O2 cut to fit) but it will not come out (turns) from the Catalytic Converter (O2 located on center of cat).
@davidhimmelsbach557
@davidhimmelsbach557 Жыл бұрын
When using heat, use candle wax as lubricant. Also, consider tightening and backing out in cycles. THIS is why breaker bars are 'breaker bars.' They are designed exclusively to break fasteners loose. Rust is your problem. For some situations, it's possible to apply anti-rust disolver. Search yt for videos on what's out there. O2 sensors are NEVER bunged into cats. They are in front or behind them. A sensor 1 is in front; a sensor 2 is behind. Sensor 1s run the engine. Sensor 2s are for emissions qualification. You can skip the latter if you're in a location that never demands a 'pass.' You can never skip a sensor 1 failure -- as your gas mileage will plunge -- and you'll destroy your plugs and much else. (the cat)
@angelisone
@angelisone Жыл бұрын
@@davidhimmelsbach557 Tried & used those that you have mentioned with no success. If you never seen an Oxygen Sensor parked on the Catalytic Converter, then you are lucky. Sensor 2 usually has heat shield around the Catalytic Converter. Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai & Mitsubishi have O2 sensors parked on the Catalytic Converter.
@davidhimmelsbach557
@davidhimmelsbach557 Жыл бұрын
@@angelisone Your sensor is NOT in a cat. It just looks like it is. You have a two-stage catalytic converter set up. In the first element, CO is changed to CO2; in the second stage NOx is changed into N2. Different catalysts are used in this scheme. The two-stage scheme pre-dates the one-step design. Why use two-stages? The chemistry gets better*, AND, you have the ability to save on an extremely expensive metal -- which -- these days -- seems to be paladium. Because of the auto industry, the price of paladium has gone through the roof. Your sensor that appears to be in a cat is actually in an inter-pipe that is now integral with a complete assembly. The cats are actually, chemically, different. In the one-step scheme, the factory has paid up for more of the expensive stuff -- to avoid the two-stage design expense. My bet is that the factory penciled the numbers, and figured that it was cheaper to place the bung & sensor in the OEM assembly rather than weld one in the tail pipe -- which is what you see in most car designs. Catalytic converters are not made by Big Auto. Like starters and computers, these are bought from specialty OEM suppliers -- who are experts in catalyst manufacture -- which is where the money goes. The steel encasement is trivially inexpensive. * Better cat performance leads to other performance advantages for the engine. So, you can see why high end cars went this route. For high performance read: high compression. Even Honda has gone this route. High compression engines get faulted for excessive NOx emissions. (See: Diesels) I thought you'd want to know. Other than passing emissions certification, the sensor that you're fighting/were fighting has no effect on engine performance. It's a Sensor 2 location.
@davidhimmelsbach557
@davidhimmelsbach557 Жыл бұрын
Lastly, if there is one thing that ought to be tried: vibration... while torquing the sensor back out. An air-hammer, at reduced power, with a blunt tool tip, would seem the professional's choice. The ultimate fall back is to take the exhaust system out of the car and to then drill out/ bust out the sensor. The final assault is in stages. You cut it off close with a sawzall/ grinder. Then you use your grinder/ sander to bring the sensor body flush to the bung. The ceramic interior is toast by now. Further, you may have to punch out/ drill out the last of the sensor so as to leave a ring of threaded metal in the bung. Now, at last, you can -- carefully -- tappa -- tappa with a cold chisel/ pointed punch and collapse the ring into breaking free by driving it towards the center of the hole with the punch. This last step utterly destroys its bond. Now chase the threads with an M18-1.5 tool -- so commonly available due to this very problem. A ceramic grinding tip on the end of an aid tool can be used to thin out the ring of the sensor so that when punched, it gives way at that spot. Man, that was some battle. My (1,1) sensor has taken me 40-hours, so far, as it was poorly located by Toyota. In 2004, Toyota totally changed the location to stop my nightmare.
@angelisone

Hey Chris - while your video might have been very useful, your inability to hold the camera steady while in closeup, and the lack of clearness and uneeded side issues in your descriptions make your video practically useless. Your shaky video is a huge huge problem. Please please please get a good small tripod or a good set of camera clamps, so that your images will be rock steady when you do closeups. Also get a good set of small clamp-on lights so that we can clearly see what you're doing. Watch some of the better diy automobile videos (the ones with good sound, good light, and steady camera) to learn how to make much better videos. If your materials are useful, easy to watch and easy to listen to, I'm sure your viewer numbers will go way up. Best of Luck.
