I like how you always have a mother way. I just wasted $ 30 on the special socket. Even with the breaker bar and a hose clamp around the socked it didn't work. I tried the pipe wrench and it only grips at a very bad angle. Now the regular 7/8 socket will probably slip too, so I'm a bit frustrated. It's also winter, so cold outside and now dark. Will try the pipe wrench again tomorrow. Will the truck run if I destroy the sensor without getting it out? It's my work truck and I need it on the road. We're talking a 1989 C 1500 that I bought when it wasn't even running.

The truck will run rough. Since you're having a hard time removing it, I recommend heating up the oxygen sensor area with a torch. Afterward, use a small pipe wrench and make sure it grip real good before attempting to break it loose. It works most of the time.

@@Top5AutoRepairs Thank you. I found a 22mm bolt extractor online and decided to order it. Also soaked the area several times with penetrating oil. It should work!

I used penetrating spray and let it sit about a hour. But then I rounded off the sensor trying to use one of those "special" sockets, because it flexes too much and had too much slop in it. I finally got it to break free with a pipe wrench. Good luck!

The trick to using heat to free a stuck bolt or nut is to put the heat on one part more than the other. So it would likely be better to put the torch on the O2 sensor rather than the exhaust pipe it sits in. Further, when you do put heat on one of the two pieces more than the other, it's the difference in temps between the two that cause the hotter one to expand more than the other one and that breaks the microscopic bonds that are holding them together. Dude, sometime back when I was fifteen in the early 1980s, my mechanical mentor told me to use heat on a stuck bolt. I put a propane torch on it and it didn't help. Didi it a few times, same result. A few times later doing the same with always the same result, I shit canned the torch idea for freeing stuck nuts and bolts. Now feature this. From the early 1980s until maybe 2005 or 2010, I never even considered using heat from my experience. But one day, the nut on the end of the crankshaft of my Ford 2.3 Ranger had to come off to replace the broken timing belt. Went out and bought a new socket the right size for that big nut. 1/2" drive socket. I had a breaker bar on the socket. I had a six foot long pipe on the end of that breaker bar to increase the leverage. Thought the breaker bar was going to explode. Had the hood open. The pipe on the breaker bar which held the socket and was on the crankshaft end still wouldn't budge. I had the parking brake on. I had the five speed transmission in a high gear. I chocked the wheels so the truck wouldn't move. All that to keep the engine from free wheeling. And it still did. I could ratchet fast enough to make the car start rolling despite it all trying to bust that nut loose. I took a break. Thought I could try the heat trick, again. But it never works for me. Then decided to look up the theory behind the heat trick.l Maybe I'm ot doing it right? I was in the elevator constructors union briefly. And my journeyman told me I was not using the hand cleaner properly. How do you not use hand cleaner correctly, I thought? And he showed me. I had no idea you were supposed to put that stuff on your dirty hands when they are dry, not wet. Do that, and the hand cleaner is good shit. So I look up the heating a stuck bolt trick and see if there is something I missed. There was. The basic application of the heat on the problem requires you to put the heat more on one piece of the other that are stuck. Armed with this new knowledge, went outside and tried that on the Ranger crankshaft nut which holds the Harmonic Ballancer on the shaft. Almost just going though the motions considering I had no faith in it. When I put the socket on the nut afterward, the nut came loose like it was never stuck. You should be forwarned. Researching that heat trick as mentioned, I came across one loud mouth whose video showed him holding an acetalyne cutting torch. He said you gotta heat the sucker up until it glows red. The hottter the better he said. He was an idiot making a fool of himself. The danger you all have when making how to videos and getting something wrong is looking like idiots. Worse still, is actually being a professional at something, and still getting it wrong on a video for all to see. You just made yourself, your employer, your company, look like idiots by doing so. Not to mention that by showing people how to do something themselves they could otherwise pay for, you just drove away untold amounts of potential work for some professional like you.. Maybe even you. I had the O2 sensor round trying to free it from exhaust just now. First time ever. My not so new, not so old new old lady's truck no less. Used pipe wrench without any luck. I'll bet you five dollars that after I put the torch on the base of the O2 sensor while trying not to heat up the exhaust pipe where it threads into, it comes right off with the pipe wrench of vice grip? I should also mention that not a whole bunch of heat is necessary. I agree with you about the MAPP gas. But it won't make any difference if it's propane. It doesn't have to be red hot. Doesn't have to be real hot. Just needs to be heat on one part that is stuck and not so much heat on the other to make it lopsided One piece expands from the heat more than the other breaking the bonds between them. That heart trick properly applied works miracles. I soaked the O2 sensor in PB Blaster earlier. Even had it sound and feel like it busted loose when heavy leverage was used on the wrench. But it was fooling me because it has not budged. But will after I heat it up. Thanks, man.

Anything you heat will expand. Heating the sensor itself will cause the sensor to expand and become tighter. Heat the exhaust only so it will expand and give the sensor more room to twist.

2005 trailblazer up stream 02 sensor. I made sure the engine was warm. Pulled the right front tire off and cut the wire to the 02 sensor, then I used a 7/8 impact deep socket with my Milwaukee 2767 impact gun.....came right out. My 3/8 tools were too small on such a tight 02 sensor

Brake fluid works great for getting stuck 02 sensors off. If you feel the sensor seize up when your backing it out squirt some brake fluid on the threads and wait like 5 minutes and it’ll come out.
