I have the same windows in cinder block. They are tough to get out for sure! I would tape the panes on both sides and then smash them out over a trash can. Angle grinder to each corner, then it comes right out. It’s a lot of cutting/ grinding and that metal is thick!

💯Thanks 4 video 📹. What is the measurement of the flange on those windows I'm going to have to cut stucco out on exterior and just want a estimate
@homerehabpros9617

I would start with the flange being 1”. Don’t cut more of the stucco than you need to.

@@Eastbaypisces I would have to see it but if your putting in replacement windows with no flange the exterior repairs should be minimal. You may have to trim the outside out with something like we did with this window.

Whew….tough job. Taking metal frame windows out can be a real challenge. Have you ever done this? Let us know if you have a better way to do this. Do you have to do it? Be safe, be careful, but just do it and then let us know how it goes.

Nice work. I have a 1950 home and im replacing all of the casement windows. Mine have the metal tabs that are mortared into the block wall. I found this old guy from Mexico that is taking them out without breaking any glass or cutting the frames. Hes a brick layer by trade and he wont let me watch him do it. He has damaged some of the bottom ledges though but hes good at fixing brick and block.

Bust out all the perimeter glass, Sawzall the grids and get rid of that center portion, then cut the frame and you can bend it enough to pry the rest out

After watching this video I would say that would definitely be the most time efficient way to remove old windows. Tape the panes you want to break out and move on 👍🏻

My daughter has the same type window. One glass pane broke. I thought I would just replace the broken pane. So are each of individual panes held in place by caulk or some other way? Thanks for the grreat videos. Nice job!
@homerehabpros9617
@homerehabpros9617 7 ай бұрын
It would not be caulk. There is a glazing that you use but there are also little clips that are used to hold the glass in because the glaze itself is just a finish and seal. Sometimes those metal frames are more difficult to replace a pane. I would clean it all out and look for the clips or stops that were used to hold the glass in. Hope it goes well for you.

Can I use a sawzall to cut out two bottom window panes to install an air conditioner? Is that safe? The windows will be replaced soon, and this is a temporary measure.
@homerehabpros9617
@homerehabpros9617 Жыл бұрын
That is interesting. I would think that you could do that. The metal frame should still stay in place if you cut out a piece or two. A grinder might work better because it won’t vibrate as much. The more important thing would be your safety. Broken glass can be dangerous and you may break other panes as you cut so wear gloves, safety glasses, and ear protection. Let me know how it goes.

Also you should use a wood block to hammer against; less likely to shatter glass.

I'm glad they got a video on removing an old metal framed window I've got two of them in my kitchen and I want to remove one to add an air conditioner where the window is. This gives me some idea of where to start and what I'm going to need. Also if I'm working on something like this video of the window and I got a tree branch messing with me and hit me in the head I wouldn't have the patience like he did I would have broke it off or chopped it off right away something like that would drive me crazy. LOL

Man i want to do this at my house. Old block house. Same type of window. Looks like in this case they mortared the window opening. Slid the window in top first. Then slid the sill in with more mortar. No way to just tap it out. Mine is probably identical. I have an old window sitting in my yard that i did not have the pleasure of removing, but there is a good half inch of steel on all sides, so the frame is larger than it appears.

It can definitely be tough. Move slow and be patient. Safety is really more important than speed. I hope it goes well for you
@aayotechnology
@aayotechnology 2 жыл бұрын
You should have just hammered the bottom regardless if the sill pushed out. Why bother to cut into the bottom? That would have avoided the damage caused to it by the grinder.

As you cut the frame I would have broken two pains of glass and cut the window in half. A hindsight is 20/20 observation. I will try it on mine, because I have a all brick exterior.

Why didn’t you just remove the bottom pieces of glass from the putty hackout? Then you could have cut the entire bottom off, and there would have been zero tension.

I appreciate your comment very much but That is what the owner wanted. And the window was all just single pane and a big loss of heat in the winter. Along with that, the metal frame had begun to rust away because it hadn’t been maintained. But I do understand your view. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WATCHING

I have these old windows in my house in Phoenix AZ. I love old stuff. I hate the idea that the guys that installed these windows are all long gone. The problem I have with the windows is it gets so hot here and i would save a ton of electricity if i change them out. I’m thinking about cleaning them, painting the frame, and then installing a new window, right in front of the old one. I’m a plumber, not a window guy, so I’m not sure how realistic my idea is.
