My .02$. Using a slightly darker stain blended better for me than the original Miniwax Stain. I orginally used Miniwax Finish Pecan 245. I replaced it with choosing a darker tint. I applied the Minwax MW1107 Amber which was purchased at Lowes. Blended perfect !! (I suppose the hydrogen Peroxide and sanding effect the wood and makes the wood turn white so that using the original stain will not not penetrate the same ) Anyway going darker worked for me and I had many bad spots caused by urine from two small male dogs who mark their territory on my hardwood floors. *** one more tip: Anyone giving away dogs on Caigslist is NOT gonna give away a perfect dog. My two small males mark their territory in the house and I cannot figure out how to correct their behavior. They mark their territory when I am not looking and the dogs know it is wrong.

I have had better luck with zar stains as they do not seal the surface once they dry. Heat the stain in an old crockpot as it will help the stain penetrate better.Keep in mind if you use hydrogen peroxide and you plan on staining you are going to need to use a stain controller as the hydrogen peroxide seems to affect how the stain penetrates. If the stain is still there after the use of hydrogen peroxide try using Bar Keepers Friend as it has oxalic acid in it. You should really use an osculating sander instead, as that type will leave swirl marks.

Hydrogen peroxide will also work for cat urine smells. If you have a wood floor, you know how difficult it can be to eliminate that smell. I used a syringe to literally inject it into openings. Repeated applications were required, but it worked! It also helps that the reacting H2O2 bubbles up some of the dried pee (now dissolved into the water since the H2O2 is only 3%), meaning you can wipe away whatever rises to the surface. Do a little every evening until the smell is gone and/or the H2O2 no longer bubbles up (i.e., there's nothing left to react with).

Thanks for the peroxide tip!! Normally wood floors are stained to a desired color then there are a couple clear coats of usually polyurethane (water or oil base) put over the colored wood stain. The clear coats range from dull to very glossy depending on preference. The clear coats add a barrier to make floors cleanable & more moisture resistant. Were these floors never clear coated?

In your case, the finish was worn off, which left exposed wood grain to collect dirt. (And allowed wood to darken/stain from water/uv/other assuming you wash the foor). So you mainly scrubbed out the dirt. The very light water discoloration was lightened via the bleaching(H Peroxide), yes, to some degree. The sanding creates dust which lightens the surface temporaily(so don't be fooled by that effect). However, it can remove very minor staining that is only surface deep. But mainly the repeating scrubbing/wiping was removing more dirt each time you did it. The point here is that your floor was not deeply stained or warped from extreme amounts of water. So a very easy case. For major water damage and or pet stains, specially formulated wood bleach will be neccesary. And even then it won't dissapear completely. Unless you bleach to extreme. Only deep sanding will expose undamaged/unstained wood in that case. Or staining the floor a dark color will blend the damaged areas. Final note: Never scrub or sand against(perpendicular) to wood grain. Even scotch bright pad. Grain is made up of softer and harder layers(summer vs winter growth). Softer wood will sand away faster. So sand/scrub accordingly. If my thoughts are not helpful then feel free to try your own methods and ignore mine, lol.

SAVE HOME HACKS & ANSWERS HOME REPAIR & MAINTENANCE FLOOR REPAIRS How to Remove Murphy Oil Buildup Off Wood Floors By SAL MARCO Murphy Oil Soap is a brand name cleaning product made by Colgate-Palmolive. Murphy Oil Soap has a wide variety of uses including finished wood floors or furniture, ceramic tile, engineered flooring, laundry stains or painted wood. Accidental spills or adding too much soap to the cleaning water leads to an oil soap buildup and leaves a wood floor dull. Removing excess oil soap is necessary to restore the wood floor's surface. Soap buildup dulls the appearance of wood floors. Step 1 Move furniture, rugs and other items to one side of the room. Step 2 Fill a bucket with cool water. Step 3 Submerge a rag in the water and wring out the excess water. Step 4 Swab the wood floor with the damp rag, working in 4-by-4-foot or smaller sections. Step 5 Dry the floor immediately with a dry rag. Step 6 Rinse the rag in clean water. Drag the rag over the section again and immediately dry the wood floor. Repeat as often as necessary to remove the Murphy Oil Soap buildup from the surface of the wood floor. Step 7 Move to the next 4-by-4-foot section of wood flooring and repeat the process until the Murphy Oil Soap buildup no longer remains on the floor. Change rags and water often to prevent redistributing the Murphy Oil Soap over the surface of the wood floor. Continue to work on small sections of the floor until you finish half of the room. Move the furniture, rugs and other items to the clean side and repeat the process on the other side of the room.
