Big thank you for this superb video, I’m no stranger to working on cars, but this is all very much more modern than I’m used to, so to see all the horrible little clips and brackets in your video was a huge help. Clutch kit changed and the loud rattle at 3K rpm+ is now gone. Took me about 3 1/2 - 4 hours but a huge saving on the cost at my local garage. Once again, many thanks.

Hi man! After 2 years here I come again hahaha, I have 2 ups both bought used, one is smooth shifting (original clutch, 90.000 km), the other (cluch changed by an unknown mechanic while in the hands of previous owner, current cluch has 85.000km) gives me the sensation that even if I fully press the pedal its like the clutch should disengage a little more, the gear changes are clunckier and sometimes (1 out of 30 approx.) the first gear sticks and I need to re engage the clutch releasing the c. pedal while still in 1st give a little gas and then will go in 2nd gear, sometimes is also stiff to go out of 2nd gear and there is a little click to go past to enter 3rd and also enetering 3rd not so smooth as the "good" car, also I noticed on the well behaving car the bite point of the clutch pedal it's a longer travel, the poor behaving car has a shorter distance from pedal fully depressed to bite point, moving out of stoplights I don't feel as the clutch of the "bad" car is gone, what would you do? Ps. I changed on both gearbox oil myself so quantity and quality is the same (75w gl4)

Hi, this is a great video well explained and have you done a video to remove an automatic gearbox. I have worked on cars but never replaced a clutch. I have a VW UP 2013 Automatic and the clutch is slipping. After watching your video I have started to remove the clutch. I have removed all the top bolts, a stater motor. I am unable to remove the bolt from the stater motor bell housing. I am not sure which wire looms/plugs to disconnect and how they are secured. Tomorrow I am going to remove the oil, drive shaft, and all the bottom bolts. Also which clutch should I buy, the listing says semi automatic or manual gearbox operated by a control unit. What oil would you recommend. Thanks

First off, awesome video. Great camera angles which really helped me figure this process out. I have 2 questions. How in the world did that gear selector mechanism come off so easily (the one held in by the balance weight)? Mine does not want to come off at all. Secondly, has there been any update on the engine brace situation? Have you seen a commercially available one which could be used for the up? Thanks in advance!
@ford873
@ford873 4 жыл бұрын
The balance weights can be tricky to get off. A little lubricant sprayed on after you remove the nut and left to soak for a little while will greatly help you get if off. Also when removing, dont just pull straight up, rock it back and forth as you pull up. You can also tap them from below with a lever bar and a rubber mallet, but i really wouldnt advise this unless it is siezed and you have no other option. Sorry, no update on a good aftermarket engine brace yet.

Thank you! Can you say what cause the common rattling noise from those gearboxes ?
@ford873
@ford873 4 жыл бұрын
Most commonly from what i have seen is the clutch pressure plate. The fingers bend or break off and make contact with other components. Occasionally the release bearing can cause issues as well.

Thank you for that video. I think next time i have to change the clutch, pressure plate and release bearing due to some rattle sound only if the clutch is disconnected on my wive's up. Could you recommend me a tool to hold the engine (I don't know the right word for the bridge on the top of the engine)? Thank you.

If you search for engine support / engine brace on Amazon there are several listed. I’m afraid I can’t recommend a specific one as I work at a main dealer, we only use the ones supplied by the manufacturer.

@@ford873 Engine brace, that's it. Ok, thank you David, I was just wondering cause there is not much place on the right and left side to put a "standard" engine brace on.
@ford873
@ford873 4 жыл бұрын
That’s true, it is tight for space. We have different feet we can swap out for the various models that have the right angle and shape for each front end. If I hear of a good brace that works for this model, I will be sure to update the description above.

Thanks! question: if you coast in neutral at let's say 100km/h does the splash lubrication of this gearbox works or is it linked to rpm so you need to be in gear to lubricate properly?
@ford873
@ford873 3 жыл бұрын
I am assuming you mean without the vehicle being in gear but still running? I would expect that it would be sufficient enough. Its a small gearbox with only one chamber. Usually the handbook would advise a speed and time limit for towing the vehicle without the engine running because this could damage the gearbox through overheating etc. I couldn't find any limits listed for this vehicle so coasting should be fine. Although coasting and not being in gear is generally advised against while driving.

hello! could you help me with some advice? the fact is that my volkswagen up! (2013, the gearbox is robotic) needed a box replacement due to an adaptation error. In the process of replacement, the thermostat housing was damaged. I'm trying to find information - was there a need to remove it in the process of replacing the gearbox - and I can't find it.. after watching your video about the removal, I did not see that the thermostat housing interfered, and the car is now in service and is not available to me. Could you tell me if the thermostat really interferes?
@ford873
@ford873 8 ай бұрын
I have never needed to remove one or have it interfere with removal or replacement. So unsure how they could have damaged it. I would imagine its more a case they noticed it was leaking when they removed the gearbox and it needed replacing?

Hi, my VW up is a ASG auto. Struggling to get into reverse. I have to sometimes turn car off and on then go from D1 straight to R for it to engage with a loud clunk sound? What do you think needs repairing as I just bought it and hope it doesn’t cost much unluckily the private seller hid the fault from me and I found out upon arriving back home. Morning try to reverse with no luck until messing with gears etc usually trying to drive forwards then reverse works after. Appreciate any advice. Thanks

@ford873 3 жыл бұрын
These are basically still a manual gearbox but with some extra gubbins to operate the clutch and change the gears. They were not the greatest boxes, even when new. Its hard to say without seeing the car, but the most common fault i see with these is a worn clutch friction plate. The only other real issue i have seen is the connector plug for the gearbox control unit, a few had contaminates which got in the plug from the factory. The first thing i would do is check your fault codes and see if you have any stored.
