So with a bigger lift, bigger tires and some harder wheeling in the future, it was time to upgrade my Jeep Wrangler JKU's driveshafts. I opted to install Adams Driveshafts 1350 Front and Rears. In this video I head over to my good friend Mike's shop (San Diego Off-Road and Custom) so we could use his lift and tap into his technical experience. #jeepmods #driveshaft

Got an idea, anytime you guys do an upgrade like this how about laying out all the tools you used and go through them. Talking sizes and techniques to use, like pullers n such. Just an idea so when someone doing it at home they can gather the tools before starting the project. Love your channel keep up the great content!!!!

Excellent upgrade. Your how-to videos are perfectly done, never leave any room for doubt. I like that angle of doing these type videos...you can't assume the viewer knows what he /she is doing. Have to come in as if they never seen a drive shaft in their lives, and you do. Well done. I'm out of the Phoenix area and Lakeside is not that far away. Thanks for the share.

Too bad he didn't mention what size socket to use for those yokes. I laughed at "don't overtighten the pinion yoke or you may damage the crush sleeve", then he attacks it with an impact gun and says "yep, that feels about right" lol

I've really been wanting to see this video after all the discussion of needing to have a stronger driveshaft when you start lifting your jeep over 2" and getting 37" tires and bigger. I just watched your Teraflex break upgrade, so I'm really glad this one came up on suggested videos. Thanks again for all the informative videos on axle upgrades and suspension upgrades and finally seeing the driveshaft upgrade!

Although I wheel with an ‘86 Suzuki Samurai, I faithfully watch all of your Jeep-centric videos. ALWAYS informative. A couple years ago I broke u-joints on both ends of my rear shaft. Now running Spicer 1310s on custom shafts front and rear. Compared to the stock set-up, they are way beefier and plenty enough for the 31s which look huge on my scaled down rig and offer plenty of ground clearance with a 79” wheel base.

He wasn’t kidding about those driveshafts being hard to remove. It took me about 3 months of busting through rusted bolts and hammering away at the front and rear drive shafts before I finally broke them off the vehicle. Now I’m here, learning how to install the new driveshaft that I will now have to buy.

Hi - great video, thank you for posting. Listen, I'm trying to get the driveshaft off an old volvo of mine and I can't seem to get it out of the rear diff. I noticed Mike used a hammer to simply pound it out...just wondering what surface he was pounding away at - was it on the shaft itself or on the female end of the rear diff, do you remember? Whatever he was doing seemed very efficient and I'm hoping to replicate his technique. Great looking Jeep you got there!

Changed mine last year, had the same issue getting the old CV bs off. If you watch closely when he's lowering the old DS down (6:22-6:29) you can see where the diff end is like a psuedo female adapter(that really shiny part is the male part to the psuedo female adapter), it slides over the male DS side about a quarter of an inch. Tap on the male side, anywhere in front of that. I have a massive set of slip joint pliers, I grabbed the shaft and hit the pliers at the bite point, alternating sides, and it will come undone. If you're doing a replacement in kind, just be certain you don't damage the female side of that diff joint

Hey Brad.. It's probably been mentioned already but although your technician means well, It's never a good idea to install a pinion nut with an impact. Transfer case side as well. Who knows how much torque is on the transfer case side. He set his torque wrench to 160ft lbs and the nut never moved before it clicked.. I can bet money he changed the preload on the pinion bearing as well.. Please do yourself a favor and take it into a driveline shop and have them change your crush sleeve and reset your preload accordingly. It'll save you aggravation and money in the future. You're way too good of a guy to have a shop burn you accidentally... How's the stock steering off road with the 37's? I can bet you're looking at a PSC system.. Keep the shiny side up bud.. Happy wheeling...

Noticed the Adams driveshaft yokes don’t use a dust cover for the pinion seal. Is there or reason for this or is the factory dust cover considered an overkill? Wondering if it is likely for a spec of sand to get trapped between other pinion and the seal and create unwanted grove without the dust cover.

I wondered the same thing but noticed there's some type of rubber material there sticking out. I also wondered about the gap where the OEM Style front flange mates with the Adams OEM Style. 2023 - I was quoted $240 by the local Jeep dealer to install a front drive shaft if I supplied it. It took me close to 4 hours and I still need to revisit the bracket (see 14:30-14:50). I would say I was working slow for multiple reasons including having to beg, borrow tools from neighbors and shuffle around tools when the rain came. So the $240 would have been well spent but I learned a ton as well. I will write up a summer below too. FWIW, another '4x4' local shop said they would install their own custom shaft for $1400. Yikes!

@KnifeataGUNFYT1

Pinion gear has a preload setting based off the torque required to turn the driveshaft. The idea behind his work on the diff side was to NOT screw with the preload setting. I've heard a lot of DIY guys say it's easy to do and I've heard a lot say, never do this without checking preload with a dial torque wrench.... Basically if you screw up you'll eat your rear diff up in a few months

How is a u-joint strong than what the factory had
@seanbeckstead774
@seanbeckstead774 6 жыл бұрын
The factory joint is a constant velocity style joint with small ball bearings and bearing cages. A u-joint is a large chunk of steel with a channel for grease, the joint caps use small needle bearings, but they don't take the torque shock and load that the cv joint does.

An Impact gun she’ll never ever be used to torque the pinion nut. There is a high chance of bearing scoring. There is a tool called “Torque Multiplier” that’s what he needs to torque and pinion nut.
@TrailRecon
@TrailRecon 6 жыл бұрын
A torque multiplier would be a great tool to have. No mention of it in Adams instruction though: With the Impact gun tighten down the pinion nut until the socket comes to a stop. NOTE: DO NOT KEEP TIGHTENING THE PINION NUT AFTER THE SOCKET HAS STOP. If you keep tightening the nut you will over crush the crush sleeve and the pinion bearings will burn up.
@admantiom1848
@admantiom1848 6 жыл бұрын
That is per “Dana Spicer manual”. Loosing or tightening any pinion nut. I had no clue till my buddy built me a Dana 60 rear axle for my Fj cruiser and that’s how I found out about the sensitivity of the pinion nut/bearing scoring. A lot of shop don’t know or knowingly take the shortcut which can be disasters. In which they are shorting the life of the bearings.
