How to Remove and Repair: Nissan Altima Cracked Exhaust Manifold

Here's how to remove and repair an exhaust manifold when it has a leak on a Nissan Altima. Exhaust manifold cracks are common on the Altima. The car in this video is an '05 model with the 2.5L 4 cyl engine.

Good video. about eights years ago I replaced the OE exhaust manifold with the pre catalytic converter on my wife's 2005 Nissan Altima as it had a few cracks in the case. I replaced the OE manifold with one made by Walker. That failed within two years still under warranty. I removed it and turned it in for a new one. Now it has been six years since I replaced the manifold a second time and it is leaking again where four tubes come together at the top of the pre cat canister. The car has 181K miles and I am not replacing the manifold again. I am going to try and weld it as you did.

For those who want to find the leak in their exhaust, put a leaf blower in the tailpipe and tape it tight. Then turn it on and spray soapy water (Dawn and water) throughout your entire exhaust pipes and you'll see leaks right away because it will bubble like hell in those areas...

I did the same except I used the exhaust of my shop vac to pressurize the exhaust system. I them took the probe off my mechanic's stethoscope and used the rubber tubing to probe for a hissing sound. Did it again today but will be following us with dawn soap as you did.

I came for a sound too but I guess it is the manifold because the noise is coming from under that silver cover.

Hello. Thanks for your videos. I have the same car. Everytime I look something for my car your videos show up. I have the check engine light on. The mechanic checked the error code and told me that the code is about the upper catalytic converter or the oxygen sensor on it. However the car has no problem when running. I guess when you have a faulthy sensor you should have other problems or symptoms. The car has 103.000 miles. Do you think the problem is the catalytic converter or the oxygen sensor? Thx

Make sure you unplug the batter before anything !!!!!!

Not really any reason to disconnect the battery to work on the exhaust like this unless you plan to remove the alternator.

What a hot mess. I replaced the undercarriage portion of the exhaust on my 13 Altima 2.5. The huge long flex pipe and cat assembly, did it myself at home because the OEM fell apart. Now, I guess after using an impact gun on the front nuts, this has caused stress on the exhaust manifold and buzzing hard during cold startup. Ugghh this car. I don't have a welder. Thought about using jb weld but after seeing this video, no way I have time for all this. Got a friend who is a good mechanic and he also suggested welding and repairing the manifold. How is this not recalled. Never again buying a nissan.

Why weld when you can just replace the cat converter and flex pipe? Temp fix and gonna still cause issues later you think!

A good weld is all that's needed to fix the current issue. Why spend more money when you can fix it? This one hasn't cracked or caused any issues since I welded it. I would replace it if it warranted being replaced, but if its repaired correctly, it most likely will not crack in the same place again.

Did your cylinders random misfire before you fixed the manifold?

No, the other problem was the crank sensor was bad so it had random no starts but now that it's fixed it starts and runs great without the exhaust leak!

@@joseramirez9932 check if your valve cover gaskets or spark plug well gaskets ( fitted into the top of valve cover under ignition coils) are leaking or if your cat converter has been poisoned by running to rich

Each shop has different labor rates. They shouldn't charge more then 2 hrs at most.

@@okcvet1st Im quoting this for a customer right now, im going with 4-5hrs. Most shops need to make double the labor for the time it takes to make any money. Im assuming 2hrs of actual time, up to 5hrs charged. The guy asked for a number off the top of my head and I said 500-600$

I'm in the same boat w/a 2009 Altima. I was pricing manifolds on Ebay. They are around $120 plus around 2hrs or so labor. So for the part, garage labor and tax I would think around $400...

My video isn't "what a cracked exhaust sounds like." It's how to repair one. Besides, not to be rude, but if you don't know what a cracked exhaust sounds like, you prob don't need to attempt the repair yourself. I hear cracked manifolds/blown exhaust gaskets from across parking lots all the time, but I know what I'm hearing. People look dumb founded and confused when I tell them that they had a cracked exhaust, like I'm making it up. I also have a neighbor that use to drive by everyday with an exhaust leak for about a year. I had asked them a few times if they want me to fix it, they said they didn't hear it. Then one day, I said sounded like you got your leak fixed. They responded, yep cost them $1450 to replace the manifold when it finally broke in half and they thought the engine was blowing up. They pulled into the first auto shop they found and could've had me fix it for $150. Sorry I couldn't be more help to you. Thanks for watching!

Don't get your feelings hurt. I don't work on them for a living so I wanted to make sure what I was hearing was a crack. Guess the first time you heard one, you were just born with the ability to know it was a cracked one. Lighten up. The cat on ours is less than 3 years old and shouldn't have but it has and your video helped me find it. Sleep tight
