Thanks for this. I'm doing our VW Sharan 1.8T petrol - dang camshaft belt slipped off and got shredded by the belt shield. When this happened, our first thought was that the car has stalled (we stopped to pay toll fees) and tried to push the car back to life as our initial thought was that the battery ran flat. Unfortunately we damaged the valves. On the Sharan the engine is turned 90 degrees, so the camshaft belt sits on your left, which makes it a pain to get at the turbo. My aim is to lift the head + turbo out of the engine. This video is helping me a lot in determining what new tools I'll have to purchase. Interestingly, the coolant flange on the Sharan seems to be aluminium, I'll have to check. In the initial assessment we decided to replace the camshaft belt in the hope that we got lucky. I've got a new cam belt, plus tensioner, large and small pulley and a new waterpump already installed. By the way, the left engine mounting is really difficult to remove, you have to work around it. Unless I can remove it by moving it downwards instead of upwards... The second part of this video is giving me hope that we do not have any cracked/damaged pistons.

Just got my first car a month ago, a 1998 Audi A3 1.8T, I think it's got a blown head gasket due to a few problems I've encontered in my time using the car. I'm 20 years old and don't got much money so I will be replacing it myself. I got some tools and I got the video, wish me luck!

That coolant hose flange is similar to what is seen in the Jetta, though it seems harder to get to. VW engineers have evidently not yet solved the problem of using plastic flanges against variably hot steel/aluminum parts. I know steel flanges weren't perfect, but you almost never have to replace a steel flange.... Great video series, thanks for going through the effort to post these. I especially like the fact you leave in the mistakes, like that broken plastic part. Not only does it speak to honesty, but also what to do next is often where we amateurs need guidance.
@myRatchets10 жыл бұрын
yes I think that flange has been leaking from the first 1.8L engine they made and still I saw it leaking on the newer similar 2.0L turbo engine they have now lol. thats almost two decades without a solution.

Yeah I was doing a clutch on a B6 1.8t and with the transmission out it helped get better access to the rear coolant flange so changed it.

Hey ratchets love your videos, building a 2000 Passat right now and your videos have helped tremendously. Could you make a video about where the vacuum lines go on the 2.8l 30v?
@orochiwarrior1115 жыл бұрын
About the intake manifold, there are 3 10mm bolts directly under the manifold. They form a triangle, holding a bracket with tubes and connectors. Removing this bracket by removing the 3 10mm bolts will let you pull the manifold back for plenty of space.

Hi RW Im currently stripping a 1999 Passat 1.8L Petrol 20V APT engine because of rough running at idle, hill climbing and cruising speed. Garage did compression test No1 cylinder is down by 30%. Done exhaust test with paper and suspect outlet valve has failed. Got as far as taking the inlet and outlet manifolds off and found the first exhaust port on cylinder one very clean compared to others coated in Carbon. Did WD40 test and found the fluid leaks away on the very first Valve all other vales including inlets are OK. Need some advise on how to proceed with this problem please!

I have the same car, mine's a 1.8t b5 Passat, same exact setup under the hood. You know that coolant flange you mentioned next to the combi valve ? (or egr valve).. Well, I changed out my Coolant flange after around 20 hours of working on it, and as I was tightening the last bolt (specifically the first double headed bolt on the bottom of the flange that holds the flange against the engine block) with flexible socket wrench, the damn thing broke. So about an inch or so of the bolt is stuck in the head. Do you think I can get away with drilling through that bolt by going through the firewall after removing the battery?? I took it to 2 professionals who specialize in bolt removal, they tried everything they had in their shops and utterly failed. They told me my only bet is to remove the entire engine. Can't tell you how frustrated I am with myself for breaking that damn bolt.

Please help: is it normal for a "low pressure" light to come on after replacing cylinder head + oil cooler +oil filter? I didn't pull the fuse to build oil pressure before starting it so maybe that's why the lifters are so loud?

best thing to do is take these 1.8t engine and sell it because ther complete junk after 120,000 miles, all the plastic clips breaks, turbos charger failer is common, they also run extreamly hot ,they crack blocks, heads, the clutches in the cars are also junk .. these enginesand cars are known for tons of problems . now dont get me wrong , they do last long tho and run ok, but there just so problematic there not worth buying . if your going to buy a vw engine make sure its the 2.5 I5. the 2.5 I5 is much much much much better setup than 1.8t and sounds,runs so much better, after i found the 2.5i5 i dont even touch 1.8s and more
