Just about to attempt a repair on a sorry looking Bundy cornet that a kid dropped. I initially made it worse by clobbering it with a small mallet. No repair shop in this part of Africa. After admitting that I know nothing about repair work I had a look at your video. I have a much better idea now! Cheers

Very informative video. I bought an old Bach trumpet in a thrift store & figured it would be a good restoration project. It has a warped bell, several dents (including one on the second slide) & the section behind the bell is bent, so my purchase may bring some tears. Your video gives me an idea what I may be in for. I don't even play trumpet, but I'd like to learn!

I never thought I'll be mesmerized on looking at this, the care of the restoration steps is really nice experience, mainly in these times. I have a 1914 Holton Revelation with a big dent at one side of the top of bell top, more a coin than a dent, I hope I'll find somebody here to restore...

Wonderful videos on dent removal. Thanks! In body shop videos on KZbin they frequently have a lamp reflected off and illuminating the metal with closely spaced parallel lines THOSE THINGS SHOW EXACTLY WHAT IS GOING ON WITH DENT PRESENCE AND WORKING OUT. those rollers are very hard to find! i have searched a couple international resources and think those that ferree were made in Germany. there are some small hand rollers available in the US, but an option would be to have one made at a machine shop

another option would be to use a dolly (auto body tool) together with a mallet and small dent hammer. slower process than to just roll out bell dents, but entirely practical

Yes, it can, but it will probably not affect it too much. You need to balance the risks and benefits before you do this or any repair. Art

I new to this area and have 1939 Martin Handcraft Committee medium bore trumpet with a dented bell. Previous owner buffed the horn so often that the bell's metal is quite thinner than normal. It's a beautiful horn in nearly perfect playing condition. Would it's bell dent repair be an issue? I can bring it to you of course.

Does dent removal help restore the bell back to it's original resonance though? Or is dent removal mostly cosmetic since working the metal hardens it?

Dent removal can change the sound; sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. Usually it changes it so little that it is not worth worrying about. Most dents are mostly cosmetic and have a very small acoustic effect. Occasionally it can make a big difference if the metal was cracked or if the airflow is inhibited by the dent.

I would use a trumpet throat mandrel and push it out from the inside. .

You can outfit a complete brass and woodwind repair shop for about that price. If you just want the brass repair tools, it will save you several thousand because you will not need to buy the expensive woodwind pads. dek arta if youre talking about the finish of the instrument you could try polishing with either silver or lacquer polish depending on the finish of the instrument. Second option lets say the plating is fallen off or lacquer has fallen off you could restrip it and refinish it but its better to have it done by a professional.

Why aren't brass instruments made from bronze which is ever so much harder? The only difference is that brass is copper alloyed with zinc rather than tin. Instruments of war were made of bronze for many centuries.
