What is its purpose? Will it cause an issue to just get rid of it?

It's mainly just cosmetic and makes the engine and engine bay look nice and tidy. It also offers a very small amount of noise insulation via the foam, but it won't be much. Always best to leave them in place as then the engine bay 'looks' as it should, and as people expect (when you come to sell).
