This is an easy method to remove the "gel" build up in the windscreen washer bottle.
The gel blocks the pumps, rendering the jets useless.

This worked a treat. My wife has a 5 Series F10/F11 520 M Sport Touring. The washers stopped working (just dribbles) and the garage claimed to have fixed them during the last service, which they had not. For the price of a 2m length of 4mm tubing you have solved my problem - thanks so much. It took me a while, having to repeat the cycle numerous time, but it worked in the end. I was surprised at how much dirt came out of the reservoir considering the car is only 4 years old. I also found that using boiling water seemed to help as well. Thanks again.

Cleaning the reservoir filter turned out to be the key to my fix on a 325xi. The pump connects through a tiny filter at the bottom of the tank. My filter was so thick with gel it looked plastic-wrapped. The filter pops out. I scrubbed it clean, scrubbed out the tank, reassembled and now everything works. Would not have found my problem but for this video showing me how easy all this can be done. Saved me a mechanic's fee. Thank you!

Thank you, thank you, thank you !!!!!!! I was dreading trying to get the washer bottle out to clear the gunk or paying a garage to do it for me . This worked a treat. Took 20 minutes to fully clear the washers now as good as new, my fish even got their air tube back. Thanks so very much !!!

Done it , 5 mins , connected bike pump to tube instead of blowing and pumped like a mad man !! Drained and yep working . Better than pulling apart wheel and plastics etc , although that’s a summer job as the rear pump has packed up pffffff. Anyway thanks buddy , Darren in the Las Vegas of the North -Blackpool 😜

Bro thank you so much for this video you saved me 60£ So my car is a bmw 5 series f10 and I had very little pressure on the waters jets and only after pressing the button for like 15 seconds . My mechanic wanted 60£ to disassemble and clean the water reservoir, so I start looking for diy ideas here . Your video sounded to good to be true, but I gave it a try , bought some air line pipe 5mm 3 meters length and connected my tyre electric pump to the pipe that disconnected from the jets instead of blowing my bmw as my girlfriend was getting jealous… Empty one time , refilled with hot water from the tap , empty again ( always blowing with the pump) and with all the confidence put the good stuff straight in without testing first with water 💦. It works like a charm . I’ve spend 2 pounds for the pipe and 2 for a bucket ( yeah I didn’t had a bucket ) . Thanks again 👊

The technique worked. I also used a white vinegar to flush out (left it in overnight to soften gunk/limescale/algae build up). Back blowing via washer jet hosepipe was the most important step to help loosen and float the material when draining out via siphon. Took 6 flushes in total (1 of vinegar, 5 of water (2 hot, 3 cold)). Seems like a BMW design flaw overall. Sticking to good screenwash in future to. Hopefully prevent the issue. At end worth activating pumps without reconnecting to hoses on bonnet so any leftover stuff comes out in washer jet pipe but not into jet itself. Also have to ensure jets connect to hose and click back in to operate successfully thereafter. Fishtank tubeline was less than £3 delivered on eBay! Great video and thanks.

Thanks for the video! I was using compressed air to shoot into the washer hose to clear out the clog but it would get re-clogged within a few hours. I dreaded taking it to the shop to get repaired, considering how much it would cost in labor. I followed your directions and the washer now works! A couple modifications I used: hot water from the sink to help break up the goo and I bought a larger 1/4 inch diameter plastic tube from the hardware store for faster siphoning and its ability to suck out more goo.

Thumbs up for this - I used this method to completely drain/flush the reservoir several times. In fact, I went over and above. After two full flushes, I added 3 tablespoon of baking soda to about 3 litres of water and poured that in. I let it stand for an hour or so, then repeated the steps in the video. I also cobbled together a spray can of compressed air with an inline tube joint, connected that to the pipe that has been disconnected from the washer jets and sprayed lots of air back through the piping / pump and into the reservoir, this created a lot of disturbance in the reservoir and loads more gunk came out. Since that worked so well i've chosen to half fill the reservoir with the same mixture of 3 tablespoons of baking soda and about 3 litres of water. I'm going to keep using that for the time being until the reservoir is empty again - this should help to dissolve/breakup any remaining gunk prior to adding the usual screenmix. Once again, thanks for this video it helped me a great deal.
@GKillick

Oh wow you really did go all out didn't you! Great idea with the baking soda to actually dissolve the gel and not just to try and wash it out. The fact that you have done it so thoroughly will hopefully mean that you won't have any more problems with it. I had my rear washers block up as they had a bit of gel lodge in them - easy enough to clean out though! No worries - i'm glad that it helped!

Did my f20 yesterday . 1 series . Disconnect jets under the bonnet, its only 1 clip on the left, and take apart. Squirt compressed air can down the now exposed tube/pipe leftwards towards the washer bottle and hear it bubble. Squirt the air the other way too rightwards into the washer jet pipe and any blockages will splat on your windscreen. Spray until clear and dry . Air can with a straw you need. Put a small plastic bottle over the disconnected pipe piece and press the water jet lever on the steering wheel intermittently and fill the bottle, you can see bits floating in it. You can stand by the bonnet and with driver door open operate the screenwash lever. Repeat often but don't wear out the pump, do short bursts on the washer lever. Empty the main washer bottle of screen wash by doing it again and again. With my kettle in the garage I used hot but nowhere near boiling water and dissolved 4 steradent denture tablets in a clean bucket and poured it all into the washer reservoir opening , as if topping up screenwash. then I had a cuppa for half hour and waited. Kettle holds 1.7 litres . Repeat the lever press routine and empty the reservoir again, squirt air down the pipe into the reservoir on occasion to stir up the gunk, as its sat in hot water for half hour it will break up. Run it empty, keep checking the bottle your filling for bits. New hot kettle water, hot enough to touch and not boiling. Pour the clean kettle hot water into the screen wash opening and repeat the lever / empty / air spray routine and the water you collect in the plastic bottle will run clear . Fill with screenwash and water mix of your choice, reconnect the pipe under the bonnet and test the squirters. Ive got full power water jets now, no blockages. Took around 2 hours as I didn't want to ruin the pump by overdoing it I tried a fish line to drain the water but it didn't fit exactly and I had screenwash everywhere, the plastic bottle over the exposed end worked perfectly with no more spillages . Evian drinks bottle size I used, clear to see the bits floating.

George, you are a superstar! I had same Problem in my X3 here in Australia. The car and hence the wipers were very sparingly used due to covid lockdown and they stopped working. I tried your way and within 20 mins wipers were again back in action, better than before. Will never use any other liquid than plain water and regularly use wipers to avoid stalled water in the tank.

Brilliant lateral thinking George, watched a pump removal for our E91 Touring and thought eek, that looks as much fun as replacing locking module or door lock. Pulled off the pipe blew out the gunge, and cleared with a good blow, now to syphon out the crud. Not driven the Car much due to lockdown so got down to last dregs of water and blockage! Thanks again saved me a couple of hours of knuckle scraping!

Great video, saved me a fortune and explains why the rear washer was still working. I was not able to get a hose far enough into the washer bottle on my F11 but after blowing down the tube I managed to rig up a garden hose and back flushed the bottle until it over-flowed and was surprised at how much gunk came out. Periodically I disconnected the hose and connected bicycle track pump to agitate the contents of the bottle and flushed again getting yet more gunk out. Repeated this process for about 30 mins until the water ran completely clear. No issues since and now using BMW screenwash

Thanks for this: I used a Numatic 'Henry' to suck the water out of the tank, but it was your advice to blow back into the tank that got things moving. Bit of fairy liquid in the tank, and a beer to take away the taste of the anti- freeze and job done! Quoted £400 at BMW to have the tank removed, jet sprayed, and replaced!!

Ok your idea worked best. We tried 10 mm pipe. Did you get to the bottom around the curves. 5mm did. Down the filler pipe. Connected compressed air line to the pump line, and blew back down the pipe on a full water tank. And siphoned it out at the same time. The compressor air loosened all the sludge, and it syphoned out visibly before my eyes. It took 4 x 5litre hot water bottles to clean the sludge out completely. Now my washer works like new again. Hot water really got the sludge moving. Thanks for the idea. My vehicle is an X5.
@michaeldaly3166
@michaeldaly3166 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, we used 13mm pipe which has limited penetration ie to about 50 -60cm down, but you do notice the large pieces of sludge siphoning out. We had a 5m length, which assisted the siphoning effect as the car was parked on a slight slope. We stirred up the sludge by disconnecting the water pipe at the bonnet and blowing air ie backwards into the reservoir, trying to siphon whilst this was happening to minimise the opportunity for the sludge the resettle. Made a mistake by using *hot* water which contributed to overheating of the pump ie it stopped. Fortunately it came back to life after a rest. Either theres a built in thermal cutout or by design it just won't pump when it overheats. I was hoping to siphon and stir things up with the garden hose on 'high' but probably a 6mm pipe is the largest diameter you could fit inside the inlet alongside a garden house. As George says, regular use is probably good for blockage prevention.

Many Thanks for the video! Tried this over last 2 days (7th June 2021) on my 2017 BMW F48 X1 - and it has absolutely worked a treat & saved me a big garage bill at the point where I had just about given up hope …. It took me about 3 or 4 hours though - I siphoned all the old water & screenwash off & blowed back through the washer jet tube & siphon tube many times to stir up the residues blocking the filters. Then added about 4 litres really hot water (no screenwash or additives) - not boiling water but not far off … repeated the blowing & siphoning & repeated this whole process about 5 times until all the black gunk bits came out and water came out clear into bucket … It still wouldn’t spray at that time tho could hear pumps trying hard (mine was really badly blocked up!!) So filled water bottle tank right up to top with really really hot 🔥 water…. again - blew back through siphon tube and washer jet tube to stir up any small bits left blocking filters …..then left it overnight to soften any bits left in filters (still wouldn’t spray at this point although running clear) .. Drove my car next day & but let engine get really hot & then I tried washers …back washer first as pump is higher up tank so should unblock first & it actually worked !!👍 😃 Tried front screen washer then and again worked perfect - replaced the trim over the washer jets etc under Bonnet £ repositioned the jets using the star screw so they hit the screen. Centrally & all is good now 👍- My advice is persevere it might take a couple of days on and off but it will work eventually if you get water clear - you should have seen the shit that came out of mine - looked like 100 tadpoles !!! I did think if I could get a karcher jet wash down the bottle filler neck (when empty) and give it full power that may speed up the process …. Just a theory but didn’t need to try it ultimately!!! Hope this helps someone but hats off to this guy his method actually does WORK! Cheers guys 😃

Thank you so much. This worked brilliantly. It took a few flushes to finally clear it but is finally working. I was amazed how much gunk can out. I was going to ask BMW to fix it as part of the service and i would image that they would have dismantled the entire water tank which involves removing the wheel, the wheel arch cover and a lot of fiddling about. That would equate to nice labor charge, so again, Thank You very much for posting this helpful video. Much appreciated

Full marks for a beautifully made video. If I can add a tip . . . when you push the plastic tubing into the washer tank, it's easy for it to curl around at the bottom and begin to loop upwards again, meaning that after you siphon, there'll still be a couple of inches of fluid at the bottom, together with lots of the jelly junk. So I found that by attaching a thin, long stick or metal parallel to the last 12 inches of the tube and then feeding it in, I was able to suck out the very last dregs. Another thought . . why doesn't some enterprising manufacturer market a harmless flushing solvent that would dissolve the slime, and could be used maybe every couple of years?!!

Thanks for the video George. It wouldn't work for my 2013 3 series. The reservoir is in the wing and I couldn't thread the tube down because the filler pipe bends around the frame and then down in to the wing . In the end I poured a small amount of kitchen sink drain clearer in. Left it for 20 mins and that dissolved the gunk. It was then just a matter of using the washers and clean hot water to flush through the system. I stopped every now and then to make sure the motors didn't overheat and also hosed the car down as I was going along. Once I was satisfied the water running through was clear I ran it through a car wash just in case. It took about 45 mins but much better than taking the wheel off and removing the wheel arch liner, then trying to remove the tank. Or paying £75 to get a garage to do the job. Do you think they design these things to make it difficult for us???

My 2011 520D suffered this problem. Local garage mentioned BMWs are prone to this issue and suggested adding a sterilising tablet. This did partially clear the washers but not fully. Main dealer has quoted £93.96 to clean tank. I''ll try your solution, but point of post is that sterlising tablets, e.g. Miltons (for baby bottles) cost about £2.50 for 56 tablets, appear to work if not too badly gunked up. Pop one in each washer fill. One box should last years. Should stop problem recurring.

I had this happen twice on a 3 series, it took hours to remove the bottle and clean it. I was told if you use BMW or VW screen wash this won't happen as it has chemicals in it which kills the slime. The third time, I filled and flushed twice with water and then filled it with neat Halfords berry flavour screen wash concentrate. Short bursts on the washers got them half working and they eventually cleared and have been fine ever since. I don't use cheap screen wash any more.

Tried this with an F20 118i but unfortunately couldn't get a pipe through the washer bottle neck down into the base of the washer reservoir due too many bends snagging the pipe. Instead I disconnected the pipe on the bonnet supplying the spray nozzels and and blew air into the tank via a pump. The pipe is the same size as a tyre valve so fits a car tyre pump or bike stirrup pump. A few strokes of the pump to agitate the crap in the reservoir and hey presto washer jets are working fine again.

The garage put this stuff in my campervan which only gets occasional use. It is now gunked up. Why is this stuff sold in the first place??

Unfortunately on our 2015 118, there is a kind of filter just below the filler cap which prevents access. Is this removable? If not, curses on so-called 'German engineering'

I had this "fixed" by the dealer at the last service they charged £80 and said it was the fluid I was using, oddly they are the only ones to fill it up as I don't use it much (noted George says use it) Ill be on to it tomorrow. Question: Ive had many cars never had this problem before, why is my X1 prone to this, what fluid can I put in to prevent it reoccurring? Is is just the design of the bottle v pump possition?

Thanks for your comment! You raise a good question there, it seems to be a fair few BMW's getting the problem and not many other cars. I'd be interested to know why too!

habib Ali, sorry for the delay getting back to you. I've had a play with mine - but can't seem to think how yours has become blocked! Maybe some gel has been dislodged and worked it's way down the pipe. All I can suggest is blowing (with your mouth) down the rear wiper (from the window end) to try and clear it.

So I've recently had trouble with my rear jets too, and discovered that they can be removed for cleaning! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXuXgH2lobWonJY I hope that this might be of some help to you.

Hi George My F30 M sport have the same problem but I'm unable to push the hose in the bottle because there a filter on top. Is there any other way to fix the problem?
@GKillick
@GKillick 7 жыл бұрын
Is there any way of removing the filter? if not then maybe make a hole in the filter? (I know this defeats the purpose of the filter, but if you are careful when filling it up then you don't need a filter) The only other way I know of is removing washer bottle which requires a lot more time and intrusion.

use a jet washer on soft mode. Spray into filler and the whole system will be like a jacuzzi and any crud will come pouring out from the filler neck .

Is there anyway of getting the tube into a f20 system ?
@martynjharris
@martynjharris 4 жыл бұрын
You will struggle. The bottle is shaped to fill the interior of the wing and wheel arch. There is a sharp bend right after the filler opening which means I was only able to get about 10cm of hose in. I repeatedly re-filled and drained that top 10cm with a vacuum pump, while blowing into the jet end to agitate and mix the tank.

@@martynjharris I paid a garage to do it in the end cost 54 pound which was a hours labour shit I know but still saved me messing about I also tried some sterilising stuff but that didn't fix it so had no choice

Hello All, has anyone managed to fix the same problem on BMW F30 ? I cant seem to get the hose down to the tank, gets stuck after 10cm ??
@Kingsley83
@Kingsley83 7 жыл бұрын
I managed to unblock mine on my F30 by disconnecting the pipe that runs up from the tank and blowing into it a few times. There is a white platic L-shaped connector that connects the pipe from the tank to the pipe running to the jets on the underside of the bonnet. I disconnected it here and blew in. I could hear the bubbles in the tank. Re-connected and ran the jets for a while and problem solved.
