I am upgrading my old DuraAce7800 drivetrain to 9100 mechanical (I'm still resisting moving to Di2). Truth be told, however, having just spent 2500 dollars on the new groupset and BB along with a OSPW from Ceramicspeed, I'm going to let my LBS convert my bike for me. I appreciate the video giving me the know-how to work on it if needed, though.

Only the drive side fitting was shown in any detail. The non drive side fitting is important too, especially not overtightening the preload on a left Shimano crank. Also it's best to have the chain removed, so that you can check the cranks spin freely , more.difficult to do when the chain is on.

From what I saw the threaded is the best, not just for using but definitely in maintenance and installing, the worst is the cartridge, I really don’t know why they still making it, the cartridge is like one time installation and no returning back, they won’t open and they get jammed quickly, but the threaded is easy to handle easy to fix, I hope and I wish that all the bikes will become threaded!!

probably since PF are much better (more efficient, stronger, stiffer), but not when you don't have twats designing and building your shite frame like cannondale, trek, cervelo, etc. if you think about it, a threaded bb now adays is just a pf with the bearings already pressed into well manufactured cups.
@jasongirvan6729
@jasongirvan6729 3 жыл бұрын
It’s easier, it’s stronger, you an fit larger bearings, have the bearings inside the frame rather than hanging from the frame. If you haven’t heard of Hambini you just might want to check him out and learn the actual engineering and heal teach you a thing or two about ceramic bearings as well and before you say you have and he’s a twat then go check out “peak torque” too as well as he also backs the engineering and also shows ways to get the best engineering at the best dollar and reasons. These guys aren’t affiliated to anyone. Oh by the way best bb by engineering standards :bb-386EVO

Italian Thread Confusion: In 1987 i bought a new Campag C Rec BB from my local shop. I had a 531 frame with English threaded BB shell. However, the shop only had an Italian threaded new BB but the mechanic said it would still fit as the Italian and English threads were very similar. Although it was a little tight when I first fitted it, the new Italian BB fitted in my English threaded frame. Therefore, the drive-side cup must have been Left hand threaded. A few years ago I bought a Pinarello F8 with italian BB shell. I spent 10 minutes trying to fit the drive-side cup, then I discovered it was Right hand threaded. When did the Italian thread standard change for BBs?

Or any of his videos over the current crop of GCN Tech presenters efforts. Can someone please explain to me how the drive side on an English BB has a reverse threading? Wouldn't the rotation of the crank create a possibility for the reverse threading to come loose? Just a bit confused on how that works, thanks in advance for any help.
@michaelparr3411
@michaelparr3411 3 жыл бұрын
Look up "mechanical precession" (Wikipedia has a good starting point) or dig through Sheldon Brown to see why the drive side can unwind in an Italian thread on that side. It's not immediately intuitive until you see an animation of forces. I have older Pinarellos, all Campy old style Italian cartridge bb. Easy tech, don't have a problem with a little thread lock on that side.
@MrLuigi-oi7gm
@MrLuigi-oi7gm 3 жыл бұрын
I believed there are two factors that play into the explanation for why the crank side BB is reverse threaded. As the previous commenter stated, "Mechanical Precession" is one. This is hard to explain without diagrams, but it is a result of the normal (perpendicular) contact force of adjacent threads on each other that arises when you push on the pedals. There is a component of this normal force that creates a torque on the bottom bracket in the counterclockwise direction. If the crank side BB was not reverse threaded, this torque would tend to loosen the BB. ALSO, the bearings in the BB turn freely and the spindle turning clockwise rolls the ball bearings along with it, with the outboard side of each ball turning in the opposite direction of the inboard side of the ball. So, the free-rolling balls are tightening the cup as the rider pedals forward due to its reverse threading. I said this was hard to explain without diagrams! BTW, mechanical precession has nothing to do with the precession of a spinning gyroscope. Very different phenomenon.
