Most of the rust is from the metal underneath being exposed through the chrome. So, if you do remove the rust it would be a good idea to clear coat it afterwards, just make sure it is completely dry first........maybe use a hot air gun to dry it.

Man, thanks for this tip. Just spruced up an art deco drink trolley. Didnt scratch. Looks mint & was such a fast procedure. Used a eucalyptus oil cleaning solution, slightly higher viscosity than water, maybe that helped a little bit too. Cheers!! 😎💖👍

The softer aluminum won’t scratch, but the harder rust flakes that the aluminum takes off will scratch the chrome. Still looks better than the rust.

Exactly my thought. I found out the hard way that while aluminum foil works well to remove rust, it can leave your surface more damaged. It seems mostly like a shortcut than a solution.

What do you need is this this is regular household items you need three to four spoons of baking soda you need to mix that would water until you form a paste you rub that on your Chrome then you want to use a sponge to do this then you take a piece of Steel roll Robert some more and then after you see the rust start coming off and be a brownish color you take it wet towel and then wipe it down it will not scratch your mental this is a lot better than using tin foil and it gives a surface that looks new hope this helps

aluminum is weaker than chrome, not going to scratch. Another safe abrasion for removing rust from chrome (and crud from aluminum) are BRASS bristle brushes (my no.1 go to) and 0000 steel wool.

Unless you are blind it is most assuredly scratched up. And it isn't what you think, it is the iron oxide in all those rust spots that is doing it. Oxides are used to coat sandpaper. And there will be a hole in the chrome every place you had a rust spot.

(old comment i know but to people watching now) You can use a polishing paste and a microfiber cloth (if you are a little less fancy, a rag will do) to polish it up, but for me i ussually takes ages to remove rust with only polishing paste
